I'm not an aircraft connoisseur by any means, but I thought that WWII Messerscmitts were different.

Airliners is a great site- there's a ton of cool pics on there!
Almost too many ! :D For the uninitiated, it's not the most user friendly.

if fascist memorabilia floats your boat.

Nazism notwithstanding, my boat floats in the realm of historical interest.

Different as well as on the cutting edge of advancement. Take for example the Me 262 , the first real production jet fighter aircraft.

What was really "different" was the
Volksjager Heinkel "Salamander"
:D Eject yourself directly into the jet intake.:helpme:D

You also forget to talk about the Bachem Ba143 Natter which was the first vertical launched plane, let's not forget the Gloster Meteor as well. Messerchmitt was mainly known for the bf 109 in its Emil, Franz and Gustav versions as well the bf110. Today Messerchmitt is Messechmitt Bölkom Blow or MBB which produces the Eurofighter and modernizes its last wing of flying F4G which are all in the Richtoffen squadron.

Yes,the german engineers were very inventive during WWII when it comes to killing and destroying...
Afair you can fly the "Komet" in the "Secret weapons of WW2" Addon for "Battlefield 1942".

Putting aside the political issues surrounding the Nazis, they certainly had a more forward-thinking view when it came to their aircraft.
If they had succeeded in getting the Me262 into service sooner, it could have spelt the end of the RAF and could have paved the way for Germany to invade Britain.

Other interesting developments of german aircraft industry during WWII are the Messerschmitt ME 264 long range Bomber, codename "Amerika" :D - for bombing New York City
or the
Horten Ho 229 in flying wing design - probably the ancestor of the modern B2
or the
"Wasserfall" (Waterfall),the first IR-guided anti-air missile
or...
or..
or.

Don`t forget: these "cool" weapons only had one intention:to kill and to win the war for spreading the evil german ideology of this time all over the world.

Great pic. Gorgeous plane.

And those Nazi haters (like me) can take some 'comfort' in the knowledge that this plane probably killed more German pilots then Allied personnel.
It was fueled by VERY explosive fuels which often exploded when the pilot landed.

You obviously know your stuff. But you left off my favourite 109, the 'K' with the 'Galland' hood and the water menthol injected DB 605 engine. Almost as good looking as the 'F' and the fastest 109 of them all.

Though you obviously know all that.

As I remember it was rocket powered as opposed to being a jet and as you say was a very dangerous piece of equipment to operate. It had very limited amount of flight time once airborne too I think, just a few minutes and then returned to base as a glider which is what I guess Facetious was referencing when he called it a glider. That's when allied pilots were really able to destroy them when they lost power and were trying to glide back.

Yes, it was a rocket. Powered by two 'fuels' or ingredients: T stoff and C stoff (sp?). Not only did they sometimes explode on landing; they could be incredibly corrosive. And apparently at least one time this 'fuel' leaked into the pilot compartment and disolved the pilot to death.

It's not a real one, it's a mock-up glider.

I think the most dangerous time for explosions was actually the fueling and take offs. That dissolving the pilot I seem to remember hearing about too, nasty stuff lol.And then they flew them till motor went dead so that they dead sticked it back which is always dangerous as well as being an easy target for allied fighters. They would go up make 2 or 3 passes at the bomber formations and then glide back.

Ok got it, just looked at the pic, thanks for info.Thing looks real enough.Just looked at it again and its from Germany. The replica is little different in appearance than original no nazi emblems allowed just the Iron cross and the current flag of germany.Surprised that anybody would make such a thing and go to airshows with it.You would think 1944 and the time that these things first appeared would not be exactly times that people would want to recall there.:dunno:
