Beverage giant Coca-Cola’s Super Bowl commercial featuring a multilingual presentation of “America the Beautiful” sparked major online controversy Sunday night, including accusations that the TV spot was “un-American.”

The ad, titled “It’s Beautiful,” featured different scenes from American life, including people sharing a meal, swimming in the ocean, horseback riding, taking a road trip and more, all to the sounds of “America the Beautiful.”

The song, however, was sung in a variety of languages, generating an angry response from some on Twitter who said Coca-Cola should have presented it in English only, and causing users to jump on the hashtag “speakAmerican.”

“Really #coke come on we live in the USA so sing the song in English,” Twitter user @jaredl83 wrote.

“That is the most un-American commercial I have ever seen,” said @B_Wett4.

Former Florida Rep. Allen West also jumped into the debate, penning a blog post on his website in which he called the commercial “truly disturbing.”

“I am quite sure there may some who appreciated the commercial, but Coca Cola missed the mark in my opinion [sic],” West wrote. “If we cannot be proud enough as a country to sing ‘American the Beautiful’ in English in a commercial during the Super Bowl, by a company as American as they come — doggone we are on the road to perdition.”

West concluded, “This was a truly disturbing commercial for me, what say you?”

I don't see the problem, the country is and has always been a blend of different cultures and languages. My state is named in honor of a native American tribe (though the French version of their name), my current city name is French, and my, sort of hometown, name was Polish.

I didn't have sounds to be sure, but I'd ask how is this commercial related to super bowling or whatever dancing, swimming or eating -competition it's supposed to be according to this video?

Judging by some of the pics that are being shared/retweeted all over my networks, what I have learned due to the reactions to this ad is that plenty of Americans seem to think "America The Beautiful" is their national anthem. As a foreigner, I find that ignorance hilarious.

And I see a useless effort by out-of-the-loopers to try and pontificate on something they don't even get a little.
There are 2 very specific sides to this, and both are right.
This is not a subject small minds can lay a simple judgement on.

As for the song, America the Beautiful, it may not be the specific anthem, but it is definitely America's Song.
We sing it a hundred more times than we sing the ponderous Anthem, although my young daughter and I used to enjoy singing it (the Star Spangled Banner) over and over when in the car, just for practice.

Katharine Lee Bates wrote the lyrics nearly a decade after Samuel A. Ward composed the music. Of course Americans, when they think about it, consider the song America the Beautiful our de facto National Anthem.
Just as most all Americans know the SSB is the Nat Anthem, and even know a few words...unlike AtB which is an easy song to sing and remember the lyrics. People just confuse the actual rank of the 2 songs.

Many of those who are complaining of the Unamerican aspect of the commercial would be unable to pass a citizenship test, let alone a standard English test.

Yeah. This is the stupidest thing that folks are bitching about. If you think that you can only be American if you speak language, you really are literally stupid.

Oh, and just for the record, America doesn't have a legislated official language. Legislation may be drafted in any language indicated by the majority of a spoken language in any area.

She was a Republican who turnef back from the GOP to the Democrats in 1924 because the Republican candidate for President didn't wanted the US to join the League of Nations.

She was more liberal than her time's GOP, much more liberal than nowaday's GOP.
According to the standarts of american conservatives of the 21th century, she wouldn't be a "real" american.

Think about it, conservatives : The woman who wrote "America the Beautiful", was, according to your standarts, a liberal.
