Plasma, you make a point then start contradicting it. It's not the government's resources. We pay for them with our tax dollars. Benefits of the state? The state didn't build the roads, the citizens did. Where do they get that money from to hand out "their" benefits? Next you go on to say that the government knows better of how to solve our problems. So kids get fat because of sugar and Mc Donald's. Bullshit. Kids are fat because they sit on their asses playing video games and texting all day. So the programs from the government are an effort to make us thin and more active? I guess these aren't very good programs since we are getting fatter everyday.

Tobacco? How about you build your smoke free bars and restaurants and I build my smoke friendly ones. Let the patrons decide where to go and the workers decide where to work. Then you say,"...public resource that has been gifted..." I can see where your head is at. Where do you live, The People's Republic of Canada?

I said in my earlier post that seatbelt laws are no more than a pain in the ass and driving is a privilege. But some of your talk just scares me.

Wearing of a seatbelt - as I have stated earlier - is not just to protect the person wearing the seatbelt. It also protects anyone else in the car, and in the case of a person being thrown clear of a car in an accident, also protects the poor bastard minding his own business in the opposite lane who would not have been involved but for said unseatbelted idiot landing on his windscreen or under his wheels.

Should the state mandate the wearing of seatbelts - yes, because it is not a personal preference thing, it is a safety issue affecting others.

I knew someone was going to bring up the whole tax dollar thing eventually, but again you do not understand the difference between a state and the government. I never said the people did not pay to build the roads, but whose jurisdiction are the roads under once they are built? The people's? Unless it is their driveway, no. The highways and roads are under the ownership of the state and are therefore under their rules, which are made by the government. And you misread what I said about obesity completely. Who does more to try and get kids off of their asses and become active, the government - who tries to create mandatory phys ed requirements in school and creates awareness programs - or the parents who think obesity is something genetic and can't say no to their children when they want snacks, or to take the Xbox away and get them enrolled in soccer? I didn't say the government knows better than every parent, which is obviously false, and no amount of government programs is going to replace good parenting. I shouldn't even have to be saying that.

Regarding your comments abour restaurants and tobacco, you do not understand the difference between public resources and private establishments. The street is a public resource, that's why anti-smoking laws only effect smoking there. If you want to make a restaurant where people can smoke, what is the problem with that? I made the distinction between private and public and reiterated it in my replies, so that should be clear to you. We'll have to agree to be scared by one another, because if you're going to take my choice of words as proof that I'm a communist or something... Fuck dude.

Just bobjustbob. It was singular, after all.

(Though I'm afraid once this is over he won't look me in the eye anymore)

You are both wrong. Make up sex is always the best.

The people own the roads and the state governs them. That has worked out pretty good since we have great highway systems. Setting limits and patrolling them. A system to pay for them. The project works. On the other hand, PE in schools has been around long before the the obesity crises. Healthier school lunches and a breakfast program have good intentions but it ain't working. Sure it provides nutrition to some kids that otherwise wouldn't get it from home, but it is doing nothing to curtail obesity. The food stamp program doesn't do it either. And I don't care how much information you put out there, it's going to be stuff that people already know. What the the government do? Stay out of it.

Delaware, NJ, NY no smoking in any bar, restaurant or racetrack. Delaware no smoking in hotels. Delaware and NY, no smoking in casinos. Atlantic City tried it and gamblers went to PA. The city saw what happened and repealed it but it was too late. They never got those customers back. New York City no smoking in parks or beaches. That is just as public as walking down the road. Those are just some examples. Glad you have your freedom up there. We don't down here.

Freedom to smoke in public areas?
I used to be a smoker. Now I'm not.
When the smoking ban came into place in the UK I was actually pleased about it, even though I was a smoker at the time.
Non smokers should surely have more right not to have to breath others smoke than smokers have to smoke in public places. Cigarette smoke is carcinogenic, therefore it may harm others (and it certainly discomforts most non-smokers, even without the health issue) - therefore the ban is perfectly acceptable in my eyes.

That's a good thing. If I have to die, taking others with me is a great thing.

Joke or not?

No, they should not. :nono:

You used to be a smoker. Would you sit next to a mother with a child in a carriage smoking a cig? No. If you are sitting on a bench with some stranger and you want to light one up, you would either ask or move away. If you did light up and they asked to put it out, you would or move away. Common courtesy. If I know you don't like smoke I won't do it in front of you. If I don't then you would move away from them just like you would from any other asshole.

Now, I'm walking through the park having a smoke. A jogger comes my way and demands that I put out my smoke. Should I? I'm sitting in a casino playing slots in a smoking area. A player sits next to me and starts waving their hands telling me how disgusting I am. Am I to apologize and leave? I think we can all draw our own lines here and live in harmony without the government. What if I sit in an office and someone's perfume is so strong it distracts from my work. Are we ready to regulate perfumes that smell bad enough to make us sick. How about farting in elevators?

Larss, I love you! This is a great point, but about as true as how abortion is important for rape and incest (.0010% of all abortions) No, I am not an anti abortion activist, but it was the first thing I could think of that is a fairly direct comparison. It would be hard to find how many OTHERS were killed or hurt when indiviual lost control because they weren't wearing a seatbelt, and I'm suspecting it's because it is so rare they don't keep track of it. But all things considered, I have no problem with everyone needing to wear their seatbelts, and being that the number 1 cause of death in a car accident is head injury, why are we not wearing helmets like race car drivers and motorcyclists? There are still 45,000 people a year dying in car accidents, maybe that should be considered :) (Not really joking there) Anyway, Points are great all around, I think we all need moderation in considering others stances and truly thinking of the other side of the argument we're having. The people of the world are too stupid to run their own affairs, and we MUST protect them from themselves! (That is a joke)

Plasma, it has been wonderful reading your well thought out rebuttals sir, I still have a strong belief that the government is supposed to be "by the people, for the people" and that the PEOPLE should be in the lead position of their own lives. Protect kids from stupid parents..yes, protect others from criminals and stupid people....yes, protect us from ourselves....there are just too many stupid people to make everything illegal. I've decided to put myself in control of this little guys life because I know much better than him what is good for him, he is nothing but grateful! I stuffed him in my pussy later, he really appreciateed that :)

I'm glad you're so considerate, but seriously, before those laws were put out there could you ever go to a bar or casino and not get lymphoma?! LOL, Perfume, farts...really? You're comparing those to the biggest single preventable killer on the planet? I get your point, the law goes farther than it needs to (25ft really?) but something was needed because so many were not as considerate as you.

Unfortunately there are a lot of smokers out there that just do not care about other people - they feel that it is their right to smoke, and stuff the people around them, hence the law.

Actually it is not as much of a joke as You Might think. Just remember that over half the world's population is of average or under intelligence.

So is this a law in most European countries as well?

Yes, and you can get a ticket and points removed from your license in France if you don't wear a seatbelt. A friend of mine who lived in Alabama almost died because he didn't wear a seatbelt. He spent two months in hospital and after that he always wore a seat belt when driving. Remember the old car adds, they always warned you :"buckle up for your safety". A friend of my father wanted to drive me home, the keys were in the ignition, he wanted to turn engine on without wearing his seatbelt. I then took out the keys from iginition and said to him:"You want to drive me to home, then buckle up. Count how many tickets and points you have lost because you weren't and still aren't wearing your seatbelt? Also count yourself lucky that you didn't get hurt in accident."He then looked at me, then buckled up, I then gave him his car keys back and he drove me home.
