Chicago television anchors in paper-throwing tantrum as they miss a bridge explosion

Why eat paper? Wasn't much of an explosion anyway.

Chicago television anchors in paper-throwing tantrum as they miss a bridge explosion

Two Chicago morning hosts had a comic meltdown when they missed a bridge implosion they had been covering on live television.

Anchors Robin Baumgarten and Larry Potash from WGN news spoke for three minutes about the impending explosion of the Seneca bridge over the IIllinois River.

Throughout their wait and small talk, they showed uneventful video of the river and the still-standing bridge to viewers.

They threw and ate their paper scripts while Baumgarten made fists and pounded the table

'I think we're gonna stay with this,' Baumgarten told the camera.

'It's supposed to happen right at 7 o'clock.'

Minutes later, nothing had happened and the bridge was still there

The show then briefly cut away to the weatherman. Within seconds, the explosion happened, and the news show missed the big event.

The program went back to the live river shot, showing the steel bridge blown up and collapsed down into the river.

BEFORE: The morning program showed endless boring video of the bridge, upright and fine

AFTER: The show cut away for a few seconds, and when they went back to the bridge is was collapsed in the water

'Are you kidding me?' Baumgarten cries in mock exasperation, balling up paper and throwing it towards the camera.

'This is a metaphor for our show — another crash and burn.

'We stay live for three minutes and cut away for five seconds...'

With that her cohost stuffed paper into his mouth, chewed it up and spit it out and Baumgarten started wildly gesticulating and pounding the table with her fists.

The bridge was exploded as a new $24million bridge is now open to traffic.

Too weird. Anything for a slow Friday news day.

If only the weather person would've been a cute girl in her 20's it might've been worth it, but it's not even a girl.

Re: Chicago television anchors in paper-throwing tantrum as they miss a bridge explos

Maybe everybody else at the studio just wanted to screw with them.

Re: Chicago television anchors in paper-throwing tantrum as they miss a bridge explos

That was hilarious. Would be nice to see some spontaneity of that sort on the predictably scripted network news shows on occasion.

This clip has been totally mis-represented as a "meltdown."

They were goofing around. Clearly.

I check into WGN from time to time. We get it north of Illinois. It used to just check the evening cast every once in a while to check Jackie Bange out, but every once in a while I need to see what kind of murders they got goin' down at Cabrini Green.

I'd be doing more than that if I was a tv anchor missing a bridge explosion.
