Exactly what you said. The President is supposed to be the one who is the ultimate check on what government does. Whether things violate rules, treaties, etc. Instead it's like he's relying on the CIA to tell him what is right and wrong.

They've been working hard to distort the laws to keep themselves not responsible legally and change the laws to cover their asses whenever possible.

Yeah, I'm really disgusted by the way militaristic machismo has become just so much part of the everyday American experience - this thread's reminded me of this book, which I at least recommend pickin' up from your local library:
