Mayweather: "Power and speed won't help Mosley winThere has been a lot of debate over Antonio Margarito receiving a license to box on the pay-per-view undercard to Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium on March 13. Margarito's license was revoked last February by the California State Athletic Commission. Prior to his fight with Shane Mosley last January 24, a plaster-like substance was found in Margarito's handwraps. Mosley went on to knock Margarito out. Instead of appearing before the CSAC, Margarito had applied with the Texas commission.
The man on the other end of the fight last year, WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley, does not agree with the critics who are calling for a lifetime ban on Margarito. He thinks Margarito should regain his license to box. Mosley blames Margarito's trainer, Javier Capetillo, for the entire incident.
"I definitely think he should get his license. I think the trainer, Capetillo, he's the one who decided that he wanted to put these type of things on his hands and probably influenced Margarito to go through with that. Even though Margarito should get a little fine which he did, the penalty to disappear should go to the trainer," Mosley said to The Rumble.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is making the rounds and talking up his May 1 fight with WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley. Mayweather has often been called a very defensive style. His critics think he is too defensive for his own good and that very defense makes for bad fights.
"It's not a defensive fighter, it's being a smart fighter," Mayweather said.
Mosley plans to make Mayweather fight. He wants to push Mayweather to the limit and make it war. Mayweather knows what Mosley plans to do. He doesn't think Mosley's power and speed will help him in the fight. Mayweather plans to using timing and distance to adapt and beat Molsey.
"Mosley is a boxer-puncher, I'm just a guy who is very, very versatile and can adapt and adjust to any style. I think I can win any fight that I can be put in. This is going to be the same Floyd Mayweather and we're going to see what Shane Mosley has to offer," Mayweather said.
Kelly Pavlik vs Sergio Martinez terms reached for April 17Floyd Mayweather Jr. is all over the place; doing promotional work to hype the May 1 mega-fight with WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley. During a recent radio interview with ESPN 101, Mayweather spoke about the negotiations falling apart with Manny Pacquiao.
Mayweather claims to have agreed to all of Pacquiao's terms, but the Filipino fighter did not agree to his terms. Mayweather wanted random blood tests, which Pacquiao was willing to take, but not under the timeline proposed by Floyd. Mayweather wanted the testing to continue until 14-day before the fight. Pacquiao wanted the tests to continue until 24-days before the fight.
David Haye: "The Klitschko brothers fight fat no-hopers"A middleweight clash between Kelly Pavlik and Sergio Martinez is inching closer to a finalized deal. Pavlik, the WBC/WBO champion, will defend the titles against Martinez at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on April 17. BoxingScene.com was informed that both sides have "verbally" agreed to the financial terms. A deal is not a "done deal" until both fighters sign the contracts, but Top Rank and Lou DiBella are confident the fight will move forward.
In the co-feature, undefeated IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute will defend his title against Edison Miranda. The HBO televised co-feature takes place in Canada via split-feed.
David Haye doesn't think much of the Klitschko brothers. The WBA champion says Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko fight opponents who have no chance of winning. Haye defends his WBA heavyweight title against mandatory John Ruiz on April 3 in Manchester. After the fight with Ruiz, he wants to fight other big names at the weight. He says the Klitschko tried to attack him outside the ring, a reference to when he and Vitali nearly traded blows in a restaurant last year.
If WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao defeats Joshua Clottey on March 13, and Shane Mosley retains his WBA title against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 1 - Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum is more than willing to make a Pacquiao vs. Mosley unification clash for the fall. Mosley recently told BoxingScene.com, that if he beats Mayweather in May, he would like to fight Pacquiao next - with or without a contract clause that calls for random drug testing. Mosley could care less about the tests. He just wants to get Pacquiao in the ring. Arum is not surprised with Mosley's recent comments. When Mosley fought two of Top Rank's fighters, Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, Arum never brought up Mosley's past and he made any demands for a contract clause that involved additional drug testing. Prior to the rematch with Oscar De La Hoya in 2002, Mosley inadvertently took performance enhancing drugs.
Klitschko/Valuev has May 29 working dateUpon hearing the news that trainer Lee Beard was in the United States looking into a possible gig with undefeated Joan Guzman, former lineal super lightweight king Ricky Hatton was swift and to the point with his reply: “F*** Guzman!”
The two-word statement was enough to get Guzman’s attention, and enough to offer a two-word response of his own, one that doesn’t require censorship.
Fight Hatton.
It’s a fight that wasn’t previously on the mind of Guzman (29-0-1, 17KO) when he brought in Beard for an audition while seeking new head trainers.
Vitali Klitschko vs Nikolai Valuev? According to the always well informed German tabloid Bild Zeitung - a defence of Vitali´s WBC title - is in the works for May 29 in Gelsenkirchen where Wladmir Klitschko stopped Ruslan Chagaev last summer. However, as previously reported on BoxingScene.com, this arena must be booked in two weeks time and the deal is not yet done as Don King, who have a 50% promotional share of Valuev, asks for four million USD for his part. However, K 2, has other alternatives and the fight might land in Hamburg.
It’s 20 years ago this week that James “Buster” Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson in one of the great upsets in modern sport and there still is a certain melancholy about Douglas that time has not repaired.
He still gives the impression of a man just awakened from a dream in which he is all he ever wanted to be, a man without regret, and his reaction to being thrust back into an imperfect and unforgiving reality is one that combines resignation and a stubborn despondence.
If you didn’t know better, you would think Douglas had used up his time like the uncountable many who lived their lives from beginning to end giving chase to the glory he achieved in Tokyo on Feb. 11, 1980.
BoxingScene.com was informed earlier today that IBF super featherweight champion Robert Guerrero has withdrawn from his planned fight with lightweight Michael Katsidis, which was scheduled headline HBO's March 27 telecast. BoxingScene has confirmed the information with Guerrero's manager, Shelly Finkel. From what I was told, Guerrero withdrew for personal reasons that have to do with his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Guerrero family.
Junior lightweight titleholder Robert Guerrero, scheduled to face interim lightweight titlist Michael Katsidis on March 27, withdrew from the fight on Monday because his wife is seriously ill.
"It's a very tough situation," co-manager Shelly Finkel told ESPN.com. "He can't fight like that. That's what we all told him and he finally agreed. It's too much."
Guerrero's wife, Casey, was diagnosed with leukemia two weeks before then-featherweight titleholder Guerrero was scheduled to defend his belt against Martin Honorio in November 2007.
BoxingScene.com was advised that negotiations are still ongoing to make a fight between WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto and top-rated junior welterweight Paulie Malignaggi. If a deal is struck, it would go forward on April 10 with HBO televising. The WaMu Theater in Madison Square Garden is still the target venue but the longer negotiations drag out, the less likely the fight will stay at that venue.
Lol. Icewater, you do not like Floyd Mayweather. Is it that you just don't rate him as a boxer, or is it his cockyness. There's no doubt more people hate him than love him so your not alone.Co-sign on the bolded. Mayweather is really just screwing himself on this one. Even his own fans are growing tired of the b.s. Now, the man nicknamed 'Money', just threw away his biggest payday opportunity and a good chance to shut his critics up. Either way, he would've gained more legacy wise to have fought and lost to Pac than to have not have fought at all. Besides, what big money ops are out there? Mayweather damn sure doesn't wanna fight Mosely or Williams, so now what, a return to pro wrestling???
I honestly don't see how this works for Floyd. This certainly does not help the perception that he doesn't have heart and that he runs from tough fights and just beats up on beat up fighters. Whether thats true or not, Floyd just have the names on his resume to cash in on his claims. I really don't think he would beat Pac especially now that he is gassed up to knock his head off. Give the most tireless, physically aggressive, and what some would consider the best pound for pound out right now a good reason to beat the brakes off you, and chances are thats exactly what will happen. And that's even in addition to the 25 million other reasons...
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer advised BoxingScene.com on Wednesday afternoon that Juan Manuel Marquez is likely not going to fight WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan on May 15 in Las Vegas. As previously reported, Marquez's manager/trainer Nacho Beristain made some very negative comments in the Mexican press about Golden Boy's offer to fight Khan.
Beristain accused Golden Boy of attempting to "exploit" Marquez by using him as a "stepping stone" to build Khan's name in the United States. He claimed the promotional company was not giving his fighter the proper respect.
WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan has confirmed BoxingScene.com's scoop about Paulie Malignaggi being the frontrunner to replace Juan Manuel Marquez on May 15. Khan hopes to fight Malignaggi in New York's Madison Square Garden. Khan told the Sportinglife paper that Malignaggi is not on his level.
"May 15 is the date that I have, the fight will be in America, and opponent - we are looking at Malignaggi," Khan said to Sportinglife. "We were looking at Marquez, who pulled out, so it's Malignaggi up to now and we want to hear what he thinks about the fight. Golden Boy have put the fight to his promoter Lou DiBella, so we will see where we go from here.
BoxingScene.com recently caught up with former two-time world champ and current boxing trainer Roger Mayweather. He is of course the trainer and uncle of Floyd Mayweather, Jr., who will face Shane Mosley on May 1 in Las Vegas.
“Shane Mosley ain’t goin’ to beat Floyd,” said the mercurial Mayweather during a brief conversation. “It don’t matter if I was his uncle or not - I’d still say the same thing. All you gotta’ do is ask yourself one question. Shane lost to Cotto, right? Would Cotto beat Floyd? I think even you know the answer to that.
“I’ll tell you what this whole fight is gonna’ come down to,” continued Mayweather. “Shane Mosley can’t out think Floyd and that right there is all you need to know about it. He can’t out think him. Floyd’s too smart.”
BoxingScene.com has heard strong rumors that Showtime's Super Six doubleheader for April 17 is possibly going to move to April 24. The doubleheader would feature Andre Ward defending his WBA title against Allan Green, and Carl Froch defending his WBC title against Mikkel Kessler in Denmark.
As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan will not be fighting Juan Manuel Marquez on May 15 in Las Vegas. Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, told BoxingScene on Wednesday that Marquez has not communicated with them on the fight, and Khan would move forward with another opponent.
Marquez's manager/trainer Nacho Beristain made a lot of negative comments about Golden Boy's offer to fight Khan. He felt his fighter was being used as a "stepping stone" to build Khan's name in America. Schaefer denies the accusation, and told BoxingScene he was simply trying to do his job as a promoter by getting Marquez the most lucrative fight possible.
With Marquez slipping out of the picture, Khan needs a recognizable name for his American/HBO debut. Numerous sources told me that among the names being mentioned to replace Marquez, HBO's preference is former champion Paulie Malignaggi. This would not be the first time for Golden Boy to explore a possible meeting between Khan and Malignaggi. When Khan first signed with Golden Boy in January, Schaefer wanted Malignaggi as Khan's opponent for his HBO debut.
ARLINGTON, TX – World Boxing Council (WBC) super featherweight champion HUMBERTO “Zorrita” SOTO and former WBC lightweight champion DAVID DIAZ will go mano-a-mano for the vacant WBC lightweight title, headlining the pay-per-view undercard of THE EVENT: PACQUIAO vs. CLOTTEY, World Welterweight Championship. The Pacquiao vs. Clottey pay-per-view telecast will also feature 10-round rumbles between two-time world champion JOSE LUIS “El Terrible” CASTILLO in a welterweight battle against top-10 contender ALFONSO GOMEZ and “Ireland’s” JOHN DUDDY in a middleweight duel with MICHAEL “Myckol” MEDINA.
These six gladiators have four world titles between them and a combined record of 216-24-8 (146 KOs) – a winning percentage of 87% and a victory by knockout ratio of 68%.
WBC and WBA super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan has launched another blistering verbal assault on Nonito Donaire.
Ray Wheatley who publishes the “World of Boxing” quotes Darchinyan as saying . “The more I hear about Donaire, the more it makes me feel he should be taking up a new job, maybe he should take up a new occupation, he can take care of those in need of retirement.”
Darchinyan has been bragging about avenging his 5th round knockout by Donaire in July 2007 when “The Filipino Flash” scored a spectacular victory which was chosen as the “Knockout of the Year” in the process winning Darchinyan’s IBF and IBO flyweight titles.
HOBOKEN, N.J. – Integrated Sports Media, North America’s undisputed leader pay-per-view distribution of major boxing events, is teaming-up with KO Entertainment to bring American fans the ring return of Mexican great Erik “El Terrible” Morales, who headlines the March 27th “The Champion Returns” pay-per-view event live from Monterrey, Mexico.
“The Champion Returns,” presented by KO Entertainment, is being distributed in the United States by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 9 PM/ET – 6 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV and DISH Network, for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.
Three-division world champion Morales (48-6, 34 KOs), who hasn’t fought since Aug. 4, 2007, faces former WBA lightweight titlist Jose “Jicaras” Alfaro (23-5, 20 KOs), fighting out of Nicaragua, in the 12-round main event for the WBC Intercontinental welterweight crown.
Former world champion Paulie Malignaggi was amused by the recent comments from WBA 140-pound champion Amir Khan. Negotiations are ongoing to finalize a deal that matches Kahn against Malignaggi on May 15 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Khan, during in an interview with the British media, said Malignaggi was “not on his level.” The “Magic Man” has never been the type to stay quiet. In fact he was very eager to respond.
“He's the only one with the reputation for getting stopped. He was knocked out so bad by Breidis Prescott, if you had asked him his name that night, he wouldn't be able to tell you his name. You have never seen Paulie Malignaggi like that. That's funny coming from a guy who gets smoked in that way. I've been in the ring with the best in the world,” Malignaggi told BoxingScene.com.
“I hope he understands that he's not fighting an old veteran or a champion like Kotelnik who was tailor-made for him and flat-footed. I'm a former world champion who is still in his prime and coming to take his title away from him. Golden Boy is putting him in this fight to see if he can sink or swim, and I'm going to drown him.”
Buster Douglas' unforgettable beat down of then-undefeated Mike Tyson 20 years ago in Tokyo was powerful evidence that Iron Mike was not quite as good as many of us once thought he was. And, while he remains one of the sport's most-recognizable figures, he never did anything afterward to convince us otherwise.
Sometimes we can’t conceive of a dominating fighter losing until we see it happen. That was the case when Buster Douglas upset Mike Tyson on Feb. 11, 1990, although even then many couldn’t accept it.
Douglas’ historic knockout proved once again that no one is invincible – as if we needed proof – and, more specifically, opened the door to the argument that Tyson wasn’t quite as mighty as we believed.
Tyson was very good, certainly among the Top 15-20 heavyweights of all time. His exceptional hand speed, power and ferocity combined to make him a frightening fighting machine. He knocked out 44 of his 50 victims, one of the best KO ratios in history.
Throughout history, man has struggled to make sense of the world around him, to explain phenomena that are beyond his capacity for understanding. Full eclipses, Halley's comet, plagues, droughts, floods -- you name it -- inspired legends and myths that, at their root, reduced the unfathomable to man's level.
Such has been the case with Buster Douglas' epic victory against Mike Tyson since the fighters met in the ring Feb. 11, 1990, in Tokyo. To account for an upset of that magnitude -- the sports equivalent of an act of God -- a catalogue of myths was created, nurtured and popularized. But now, 20 years after Tyson was counted out, the public needs to be disabused of its misimpressions. The myths must be dispelled.
1. Gene Tunney UD 10 Jack Dempsey, 1926: Dempsey was so revered that he was also favored in the rematch.
2. James J. Braddock UD 15 Max Baer, 1935: Braddock was thought to be washed up about a year earlier.
3. Max Schmeling KO 12 Joe Louis, 1936: Louis was an undefeated sensation and Schmeling seemed to be declining at the time.
4. Jersey Joe Walcott KO 7 Ezzard Charles, 1951: Walcott, 37, had already lost twice to Louis and twice to Charles in title fights.
5. Cassius Clay TKO 7 Sonny Liston, 1964: The upset makes sense now but was shocking at the time.
6. Muhammad Ali KO 8 George Foreman, 1974: Like Liston before him, Foreman seemed unbeatable.
7. Leon Spinks UD 15 Muhammad Ali, 1978: It was only Spinks’ eighth fight as a professional.
8. Evander Holyfield TKO 11 Mike Tyson, 1996: Holyfield was as much as a 42-1 underdog before the fight.
9. Corrie Sanders KO 2 Wladimir Klitschko, 2003: Klitschko has suffered three upsets but this one stands out because it was so quick.
10. Hasim Rahman KO 5 Lennox Lewis: Lewis was at his peak when Rahman took him out with one punch.
Five more: James J. Corbett KO 21 John L. Sullivan, 1892; Ingemar Johansson TKO 3, 1959; Michael Moorer UD 12 Evander Holyfield, 1994; Oliver McCall KO 2 Lennox Lewis, 1994; and George Foreman KO 10 Michael Moorer, 1994.
There was a collective groan from boxing fans when the April 3 rematch between Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. was announced last month.
It was bad enough that the rematch was taking place an astounding 17 years after the first bout, but the fact that it was put together after Jones suffered an embarrassing first-round knockout to Danny Green in December made the announcement all the more ludicrous.
Some fans were willing to give old veterans a pass when the fight was first signed late last year, prior to Jones’s loss to Green, but not after the former pound-for-pound king was demolished in one round? And it's on pay-per-view, no less!?
All together now: Really!?
The welterweight division may become a little deeper on May 8. Promoter Dan Goossen told BoxingScene.com on Thursday that Paul "The Punisher" Williams is seriously considering a return to the welterweight division. Both Williams and his trainer George Peterson have advised Goossen that a drop in weight to 147 will not be a problem.
Goossen is currently*taking a look at opponents*in the*welterweight and junior middleweight divisions. Some of the fighters include Luis Collazo, Kermit Cintron and several welterweight fighters*in Don King's stable.
Top Rank has scrapped its plan for disgraced former welterweight titlist Antonio Margarito to make his comeback March 13 as the co-feature on the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey pay-per-view undercard at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
As expected, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has gone on the record and told Manny Pacquiao that he can forget a 50-50 deal if*the fight with Shane Mosley does better on pay-per-view than Manny's fight with Joshua Clottey.*Pacquiao defends*his WBO welterweight title against*Clottey on March 13. Mayweather faces WBA champion*Mosley on May 1.
BoxingScene.com was*informed that former undisputed junior middleweight champion Winky Wright is close to finalizing a promotional agreement with Top Rank. Wright is parting ways with Golden Boy Promotions. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is laying out a plan for*Wright to be*in position for a possible meeting with WBO/WBC middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik by the end of the year.
Sometimes it’s good to be the king. Other times, it’s simply lonely at the top.
The latter is proven to be the harsh reality in the world of 140 lb. king Timothy Bradley, who a week ago appeared set to line up his next foe, one whose handlers specifically asked for him by name.
There is going to be some high-stakes drama on June 12 in New York's Madison Square Garden. BoxingScene.com has been advised by numerous sources that Yuri Foreman's team is considering the possibility of bringing in hall-of-fame trainer Emanuel Steward in a consultant's role for the fight with Miguel Cotto. Steward has trained a number of current and former champions, including WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. Cotto is moving up to junior middleweight to challenge the unbeaten Foreman for his WBA title.
Expects a lot of fireworks on April 24. BoxingScene.com was advised that Chris Arreola (28-1, 25KOs) vs. Tomasz Adamek (40-1, 27KOs) is close to a done deal. HBO will carry the fight with junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo taking on Joel Julio in the televised opener. A source close to the negotiations advised BoxinScene to expect an official press conference as early as this coming Friday in Los Angeles, California. Arreola-Adamek is a very intriguing heavyweight fight. The venue will be the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California.
He came, he saw, he conquered the fighter put in front of him like the professional that he is.
It’s now time to start putting better fighters in front of Nonito Donaire – beginning with an old foe.
Assuming he has his arm raised in next month’s title defense on Showtime, there’s no reason why Vic Darchinyan’s next fight shouldn’t a rematch with Donaire, the first fighter to hang a loss on his career.
Jacksonville, FL: Former unified lightweight champion Nate Campbell heard that WBO jr/ welterweight champion Tim Bradley is having difficulty finding an opponent, and is ready to answer the call.
"Look here, Timmy is in the exact same spot I was when I had all the belts at 135. All dressed up and nobody to dance with. The only fights I could get were mandatories. Call it what you want. Blame it on King, blame it on whoever, but NOBODY would fight me. After I beat Diaz, the only cat at 135 who had the stones to actually step in the ring with me at 135 was Ali Funeka. And even if I'd been at 100% for that fight, that cat still would have been a tough out. He don't play. Hits 100 times harder than little Timmy."
"But I'm getting off point here. Bottom line is I can understand what Timmy is going through, cause I've been there. But Buckethead is forgetting one big difference. He has a guy like me right here, ranked #2 to his very own WBO title, that is ready, willing, and able to fight him. He dont have to look too far down his own title rankings to find me. And I know that if something could be worked out with a Bradley fight, that Golden Boy could find someone else for the Ortiz kid. It would save Ortiz from gettin knocked off anyways, so its win-win for Golden Boy."
A war is brewing for April 24. Carl Froch will head to Denmark to defend his WBC super middleweight title against Mikkel Kessler in Herning. Froch-Kessler is a second stage bout in the Super Six super middleweight tournament. Speaking with British pundit Steve Bunce of The Mirror, Froch made it clear that Kessler has all of the advantages that night but it won't matter in the end. Froch plans to win big.
"He has all the advantages - he is at home, the crowd will be on his side and he knows defeat means the end of his Super Six dream. His biggest advantage will be the fact that he will not want to let any of his devoted fans down and I've seen up close and personal just how loud they can be," Froch said.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. plans to*fight smart, stay focused on his boxing, and break down "Sugar" Shane Mosley on May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayweather faces Mosley for the WBA welterweight title. Mayweather's big advantage with opponents has been speed. Mosley is another fighter with a high level of speed. When Mayweather steps in the ring with Mosley, he doesn't plan to rely on his speed to win. He plans box and rely on timing.
The manager of heavyweight Alexander Povetkin, Wladimir Hrynov, denied the recent rumors which claimed that the Russian boxer will face American contender Dominick Guinn in his next fight.
“We have in view other boxers with better records who hold high positions in the world ratings," - told Hryunov, according to the website of the Russian Professional Boxing Federation. – “Right now we’re trying to reach an agreement on the*financial end [for the next fight]."
Alexander Povetkin will return to the ring on March 13 in Berlin. Now he is preparing to the fight in the United States*under his coach Teddy Atlas.
Dominick Guinn's promoter Lou DiBella has blasted*Wladimir Hrynov, the manager of*heavyweight Alexander Povetkin, over his recent comments that appeared on BoxingScene.com. Hrynov denied published reports which had Guinn fighting Povetkin on March 13 in Berlin, Germany, and dismissed the information as rumors.
DiBella told BoxingScene that Povetkin-Guinn was no rumor. He reached a financial agreement with Sauerland Event. He is shocked that Povetkin's manager denied the reports.
"I was contacted by representatives of Sauerland*Promotions. These are not rumors. I was contacted and in fact had a negotiation over money that was completed. Based upon Povetkin's recent opposition, Leo Nolan being a prime example -*what crap heap did they pull him off of? -*Dominick is obviously too competent for them. They shouldn't be calling people and causing fighters to anticipate opportunities and negotiate money - when they are just jerking people off. If they don't fight Dominick, it's because they are afraid of taking one iota of risk," DiBella said to BoxingScene.com.
CHICAGO --Top Rank, Inc. and Wheaton native Mike Lee will hold press conferences in two locations on Wednesday, February 17th, to announce that Lee, a Chicago Golden Gloves and three-time Notre Dame Bengal Bouts champion, will turn pro.
Lee, a Notre Dame graduate (Finance, '09), will be available at the Joyce Center Basketball Auditorium C-14 at 9:30 a.m. EST on the UND campus in South Bend, IN. He will then be available at Harry Caray's Restaurant in Chicago (33 West Kinzie, 2nd floor) at 1 p.m. CST for a media luncheon.
Los Angeles - Welterweight superstar Floyd "Money" Mayweather and WBA Welterweight Champion Sugar Shane Mosley are hitting the road to announce their May 1 mega-fight showdown with stops in New York City, Washington, DC and Los Angeles. The press tour will reflect the magnitude of this highly competitive and much-anticipated face-off between boxing's biggest stars.
MAYWEATHER VS. MOSLEY: TOUR DATES AND CITIES
TUESDAY, March 2 New York City, NOKIA Theatre Times Square
WEDNESDAY, March 3 Washington, DC, The Lincoln Theatre
THURSDAY, March 4 Los Angeles, NOKIA Plaza L.A. LIVE
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has fired off on his May 1 opponent, WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley. Mayweather, during a recent interview with the Grand Rapids Press, called Mosley a desperate fighter who is looking for one final payday. Turning the tables a bit, Mayweather says it is Molsey who had no choice but to accept their fight. Mosley has said in several interviews that it was Mayweather who was forced to take their fight because of the failed Manny Pacquiao negotiations.
“I just think that Shane Mosley, he’s desperate, so he has no choice but to fight me. His career’s coming to an end and, before he goes, he wants that last big payday,” Mayweather said.
Freddie Roach, trainer of WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, is certainly intrigued with the possibility of a fight with Shane Mosley – if Mosley beats Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 1 in Las Vegas.
Everyone involved, including Top Rank, who promote Pacquiao, are confident a fight with Mosley would be much easier to make than a fight with Mayweather. In the last few days, Mayweather has already been boasting about his contract demands if a Pacquiao fight is brought back on the table. Mosley has gone on the record with BoxingScene, and made it clear that he “doesn’t care about the random drug tests." He wants to get Pacquiao in the ring at any cost.
“Last year I was willing to go down to 140-pounds to fight him and he turned around and took a fight with Miguel Cotto,” Mosley told BoxingScene.com.
A few weeks ago, Top Rank's Bob Arum told BoxingScene.com's Ryan Songalia that Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito was a possible plan for later in the year. Margarito was scheduled to appear on the Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey undercard on March 13 in Texas. A few issues with regaining his boxing license has shifted his next ring appearance to May 8 in Mexico. Arum wanted Margarito in the Pacquiao-Clottey co-feature to build in the direction of possibly making that fight at a later point in the year.
"We can continue to sit and wait around to see if they are going to give him back his license and therefore we had to take him off the card. What happened was the commission in California - where Margarito was suspended - interfered and we could not get the license in time, but we plan to continue the process and we expect for them to give it to him soon," Arum told The Record.
Herning – Mikkel Kessler (42-2, 32 KOs) and WBC Super-Middleweight Champion Carl Froch (26-0, 20 KOs) kicked off their International Media Tour on Wednesday morning when they faced a packed press conference in Herning, Denmark. The Viking Warrior will be counting on the support of his home fans on April 24 as he sets his sights on the first three points in the Super Six World Boxing Classic. “Never in my life have I lost a fight in Denmark,” he said. “My home fans give me the extra five percent I need to defeat Froch. I will knock him out. It will be the real Viking Warrior in the ring. A victory is all that matters on April 24.”
Tickets will go on sale on Monday, February 22, at billetnet.dk. In Denmark, the fight will be distributed pay-per-view on the satellite-, cable-and IP TV-platform by the following operators: Satellite and IP-TV operator Viasat, cable TV-operators YouSee and Stofa, and IP TV operator TDC. To get a hold of a pay-per-view ticket, the customers need to contact the operators. Price per ticket is 499 DKR. The starting time for the fight will be around 22.30 Danish time.
BoxingScene.com reported on Sunday that Yuri Foreman's team was considering the services of veteran trainer Emanuel Steward. That deal has been completed. Foreman will train under Steward for a few weeks to prepare for his WBA junior middleweight title defense against Miguel Cotto on June 12 in New York.
Foreman's manager Murray Wilson confirmed the deal. Steward is going to help develop Foreman's ability to throw power punches. Foreman may train with Steward in Detroit's famous Kronk Gym.
"That is correct [Steward is coming in]. It's official. Manny is going to help. It will only be for a couple of weeks, three at most," Murray said. "Yuri is great fighter and we are looking to throw more punches [against Cotto]."
NEW YORK -- Jewish boxing champion Yuri Foreman hopes to defend his title at Yankee Stadium in June -- unless a bar mitzvah gets in the way.
The 154-pound champion would fight former welterweight titleholder Miguel Cotto on June 5 at the ballpark in the Bronx, promoter Bob Arum told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Arum has been hoping to bring a fight to Yankee Stadium for years.
"The Yankees want to make a deal, we know we can make a deal, they're just working through a problem at Yankee Stadium," Arum said. "But you wouldn't believe it if I told you."
He's not kidding.
"They've leased out some lounges for this bar mitzvah and part of the deal was for a half hour or so, they could use the big screen in center field to show pictures and all that sort of stuff," Arum said, laughing. "Obviously you can't do that if there's fights going on."
Ramping up the irony, Foreman is studying to become a rabbi.
Friday Night Fights on February 26 will feature the bout between Mickey Roman and Antonio Escalante....I really recommend you watch this fight....Both fighters are local, they are both from Ciudad Juarez (card is going to be held in El Paso)....I have watched both of these fighters in action, and if they bring their A game, it will be one hell of a fight.
Super middleweight contender Andre Dirrell, training for a March 6 fight with Arthur Abraham in the second round of Showtime's Super Six World Boxing Classic, suffered a back injury, forcing the bout to be postponed, according to Gary Shaw, Dirrell's promoter.
The fight has been rescheduled for March 27, according to Chris Meyer, the managing director of Sauerland Event, Abraham's promoter.
NEW YORK -- Boxing could be finally returning to Yankee Stadium, more than three decades after Muhammad Ali fought Ken Norton at the old ballpark in the Bronx.
The Yankees said Friday they've agreed to accommodate a family that scheduled a bar mitzvah for June 5, the date that promoter Bob Arum wants to stage Yuri Foreman's junior middleweight title defense against Miguel Cotto at the opulent ballpark. It wasn't clear what accommodations were made, although the bar mitzvah for Scott Ballan is still scheduled for the same day.
Ballan is the son of Jon Ballan, the lead bond lawyer for the financing of the $1.2 billion stadium. As part of the bar mitzvah, the Yankees had promised the family use of the videoboard in center field, which would have prevented its use during the fight card.

After a lot of thought and reflection the time has finally come to bring my career as a professional boxer to an end.*
For the past 25 years boxing has been my life but now it is time for a fresh start.*
The easiest thing in the world would have been to climb through the ropes and fight again but honesty has always been very important to me and I am being honest to myself, to my family and to my supporters with this decision.*
The great Irish fans that travelled on the journey to a world title belt with me deserved better than to pay their hard earned cash just to see me go through the motions. I could never do that to them.*
Thankfully I have realised all my dreams and achieved all my goals since I followed my dad into boxing. To win a world title is something I will never forget and something I am so proud of and I would like to thank everyone who helped make that possible.*
This is a sad day for me and for my family but it is also an exciting day and a new start in my life, one I am really looking forward to.’
