Bolt sets record to win 100m gold

Devin Hester is fast, and has been playing football for a while now, and he sucks as a receiver.

As fast as Bolt is, he'd suck at football.

I actually think in a different life, Bolt would have made a good NFL player if he would have started early and learned the skills to do it.

As far as his running it seems he just doesn’t follow the normal rules for human physicality. Some site put up a graph once of how all the 100m records have been going down in a parabolic curve that's decreases over time and how the decreases have become very small as of now and it was followed pretty closely until you get to Bolts records where his data points are completely abnormal. He was basically able to beat the curve by decades maybe even more. That time he got today is very close to the hypothetical number that was theorized that a normal human could ever achieve.

Basically he's kind of a legitimate freak of nature. Maybe it's due to having an abnormal amount of fast twitch muscle fibers and being pretty tall and yet not having his height be a determent to him like it can be with other runners. Maybe it's something else or a combination of things. Basically unless another 1 in 100,000,000 freak of nature comes along (Then again now that he's doing so well maybe other trainers will be willing to beak their habits and actually look for people with his body type that might be fast, where before they just blew those people off when it came to running and more people like him won't be that hard to find after all.) he just not going to loose until age finally catches up to him, he gets injured, or he makes a major mistake. The scary part of it is that there are things he doesn't to great on, like staring from the blocks so it's still possible he could improve.

Although it's a cool feat, I don't get the hype about running fast. Either you can or you can't. If you're not naturally fast, no amount of training and work will make you fast. So, even though Bolt set a world record, let's not act as if he is some sort of superior athlete. He was born lucky enough to be fast. The people he beats just aren't as lucky as him.

Doesn't that apply to most sports in significant ways. Most people are pretty much not born with the ability to play in the NBA or NFL either? Still, as much as genetics might place your ceiling of where your skill level can be most people still have to work and train to get to that point. Nobody rolls out of bed one day and suddenly becomes a world class athlete.

There is a difference between a track guy playing NFL, and a NFL guy running track.

Bob Hayes won Gold in the Olympics, and a Super Bowl Ring with Dallas.
Bolt doesn't have the hands to play football, although he is freakish.

Michael Ray Garvin runs a 10.10 in the 100m, 20.58 in the 200m, He was eliminated in the semifinals of the 200m US Mens Olympic Trials and is nothing more than a kick returner trying to make a team.

Takes a special set of skills to play different sports.

Age: 23
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 190 lbs
100m: 5.58 sec

If NFL teams are willing to take a chance on Vick, then why not Bolt? That would be a nice project.

There are skills that need to be learned in order to play in the NBA or in the NFL. You can't just pick up a basketball and rely on natural ability to play point guard and run an NBA team. You'd get murdered on the court if you didn't have a learned skill set. But, you can rely on natural ability to run fast. You can't learn how to run fast; you either can or you can't.

I'm not saying that extensive training and hard work aren't needed in order to set a world record in the 100M, but if Bolt wasn't born with the natural ability to already run fast, no amount of training and hard work would've helped him become a world record holder. I could train a thousand times harder than he does but I'd still never be able to beat him in a race. I don't have the natural ability, or the body, to run fast.

Yes, but if your born 5'5" your also not going to get into the NBA either no matter how hard to train compared to the players. You would have to be able to hit half court shots most of the time to have it be even close to being worth it for somebody to put you on a team.

This really shouldn't be news, because he was on cruz control with 10 meters left in the Olympics, with arms raised, basically saying look at me b!tches, im the best.

Not really. I know the point you're trying to make, but you don't have to be a good inside shooter or a point scorer in the paint to be in the NBA. Spud Webb, Muggsy Bogues, Earl Boykins, Nate Robinson...those guys are short, but they had the overall skill set to be an NBA player. In running, there is only one thing that you have to be good at - running. In other sports (for the most part), you have to have a good overall skill set which can't be fulfilled by natural talent and ability.

Some people are given the natural ability to throw a baseball 95MPH, but without learning a proper skill set, they'll never be a Major League pitcher. Some people are given the natural gift of having a huge frame for a body, 6' 5", 295 lbs, but without a proper skill set (blocking technique, studying film, etc), they'll never be a guard in the NFL. But, if you have the natural ability to run like the wind, you don't have to learn any other skills in order to compete at a high level. Yes, you train and work hard, but you don't have to know anything else except for how to stand up right and run.
