Here's the deal ...
Only more recently -- i.e., media -- usage associated it with the bust of a woman. True, "voluptuous" often included ample breast (C cup or more typically), but it does not on its own at all.
I often use the clarification of "voluptuous hourglass" on thin, full figured (FFW) and even big beautiful (BBW) women. I really don't care what "size" she is, if she's got that hourglass and it comes out very nicely.
As many have heard me say, I don't go for many BBWs, because most tend to be straight (with a large gut), or spoon/pear (with a huge age, too much "cottage cheeze" on their thighs -- I don't mind some, especially on a hourglass). It's very rare that I find a hourglass BBW, but when I do, I go nuts -- Maria Moore, Laura Orsolya, Samantha Anderson, and others. For more apple women, they tend to be stocky'n short when approaching BBW, but even then, they are an unique FFW that puts more into their chest.
In fact, many times I've wanted to start a thread on "hourglass BBWs" but I'm sure that would just get filled with different views, let alone people cannot seem to understand "hourglass" -- even if I define it as the 100% to <75% to ~100% ratio of bust, waist, hips.
- thin v. wide: How much their dimensions are, especially when viewed from the front
- slender v. fat: How much their stomach/gut sticks out (also a valid indicator of health)
- soft v. skinny/boney: I prefer a woman to be softer than more skinny/boney
Under those definitions, I love wide, slender women. Let me say that again, I love wide, but slender women. But that means I'll definitely go for a "more hardbody" woman, as long as she has the hourglass.
I'm completely in love with Shay Laren for this reason, no more and no less than, say, Maria Moore. How can I compare the two? Again, they are what I love, hourglasses. Maria is in excess but oh so shapely and curvy, Shay is minimized just right while being shapely and curvy.
That's what I use to "define" a BBW:
How much does her stomach/gut overhang?
I'm not into most BBWs because of this. But man, when they sport the hourglass dimensions, and just come off with a nice, full set of hips and thighs with the, required, huge chest and bust, I'm so there! And I find women like Maria Moore to be pure beauty atop, so I'm beyond sold. I don't even see her stomach.
However, these shapes have nothing to do with BBW in my book.
Doctors say a woman is "healthy enough" until she has more than 1" of stomach/gut overhang. So to me, a FFW women is over that (unless just very wide), and a BBW is well beyond that (we're talking 2-3").
E.g., Victoria Lane may be a border-line FFW, because she's just so fucking wide, but has a really small mid-section and great, fanging hourglass, but she's large enough some might call her a BBW.
I just don't like seeing women with a minimal stomach/gut called a BBW. In fact, when I see some women with such, while several "petite" sized women down my own street have more overhang, it makes me wonder why people define what they do?
Millions of American women are curvy, but NOT fat, and yet they are considered "fatter" than "petite" sized women who have more stomach/gut overhang. That's what I really try to avoid, because too many women out there are starving themselves to break a size 10, and they physically cannot.
While I agree that "big" and "chubby" are less than exact, "voluptuous" was actually a term that, for many centuries, meant a woman of curvature and breeding. A woman with ample bust as well as wide hips, able to feed a child as well as cause man to lust to spear her womanhood. The problem with words like big, chubby and voluptuous is that they are quantitative words without factual meaning.

I use multiple terms ...It is obvious that skinny and fat are opposites, but what exactly is skinny and what exactly is fat?
- thin v. wide: How much their dimensions are, especially when viewed from the front

Correct, because BMI sucks as an universal measure, it's only good for media. It's really about how much a woman's stomach/gut sticks out. These are terms that are not measurable scientifically. Sure, the medical community will define being obese with a certain measurement, but even they will say that that measurement is not completely accurate for everyone.

Actually, the dimensions of women are well defined into apple, hourglass, spoon (pear/bell) and straight.Where is the line drawn between skinny and not skinny and fat and not fat? I propose to you that it is in the eye of the beholder and has nothing to do with distorting facts. The words you described like left, right, up, down, circle, square, tiger and duck are all clearly defined words that are not open to interpretation until you use them in a phrase like “way up” or “huge tiger”.
However, these shapes have nothing to do with BBW in my book.
A woman merely having breasts or not having an absolute flat stomach hardly qualifies her as a BBW.Technically, the word big or large refers to something that is more than average size. However, it can be applied to a certain class or group. For instance, a group of super-models may say that one of their colleagues is “big” or “fat” as compared to the rest of them. In this context they would be using the term appropriately even though the majority of those outside their circle would disagree. I am sure that there are more people in this forum that agree with your idea of BBW than tittenman’s. However, the fact that you have to continuously “remind” people what BBW means establishes the fact that there are way more than 2 people that disagree with your idea of BBW.

I really define a BBW as "not slender."I have read through this entire thread and realize that you have a strong belief about what BBW means to you and you like to voice that opinion. I have no problem with that. You also enjoy putting others down by acting as if their opinions are in some way unintelligent. I also don’t have a problem with that. I am a huge supporter of free speech. That is exactly why I am vocalizing my support for tittenman and others like him that have posted and discussed their idea of a BBW and been ridiculed for it.
I am prepared for your ridicule and it does not bother me in the least.
