Best story in gaming

Which games in your opinion had the best stories? Or at the very least had stories that really stood out to you? If you can, please provide cutscene movies for your choices. Here are my some that really stood out to me: Spec Ops: The Line (probably my favorite in recent memory) and Bioshock Infinite.

The Last of Us.

I've never played a game with a more gripping story, or watched a movie or probably read a book for that matter.

One of the most poignant moments in the game:

This is close to the end after you've gone through so many travails and you kind of get the sense this story isn't going to end well.

Don't watch if you haven't played it yet of course.

Of course I've played Last of Us. Amazing game. I went through it once on PS3 and picked it up for PS4 and plan on going through it again. And I remember this scene too.

Mass Effect Trilogy without a doubt. I know the ending was controversial (to say the least) and some of the story line was nonsensical (and I'm not trying to rehash it all), but to me it was/is the best evah!

I still hold my opinion that the M.E. series was my favorite series from the last gen. Mass Effect 2 was my overall fav in the series. The story was good and I was super hyped to finish it out in M.E. 3 but what had me sold was the character Shepard. Renegade Shep is easily in my top fav video game characters of all time.

^^ Yeah I always say ME1 is the best for sentimental reasons and it was the first of the awesome trilogy, but ME2 is my favourite too. Plus it has my little boy Grunt in it.

I know when I'm hooked on a game and it's Story/Universe when I end up buying some of the books to learn more about the characters, lore etc. Take Gears of War, there's some really REALLY good books written by a chick named Karen Travis that I have, dealing with how the COG stole the Hammer of Dawn tech from the UIR, E Day, what happened when the used the Hammer on their own cities and how Marcus ended up in the Slab and got that scar on his face etcetera.

I loved Gears of War and I absolutely LOVED Gears of War II. Gears 3 kinda fell flat though to me. After watching that Ashes to Ashes trailer (over and over and over I might add), I was kinda expecting/hoping for a more tragic end to the series. I didn't particularly care for the whole Marcus and his father side story and I thought it kinda sucked that Dom died in the middle of the game. If he was going to die it should have been at the end.

I've never read books that explored more of a game's lore but I have always liked the idea of using different outlets, such as books, comics or movies to explain side story and wish more games would utilize this.

In no particular order, mine are:

MGS 3: "Today's ally may be tomorrow's bitter enemy."

Mass Effect: "Don’t you understand? Everyone you know and love. You will all die!"

BioShock: "A man chooses, a slave obeys",

Red Dead Redemption: "People don't forget. Nothing gets forgiven"

Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask: "Hyah!"

Halo. Loved the games (except 4 was a little disappointing) the story and the universe. That whole, Dr Halsey with the "mad scientist" vibe stole a bunch of kids and turned them into the best soldiers humanity had seen just in time to face the Covenant onslaught was epic. Then throw in the Halo's and the Forerunner/Flood Saga. Awesome.

A couple of my all time favourite moments in gaming were landing on the Halo for the first time. And encountering the Flood.

I never had any XBOX system so I never got a chance to get into Halo. I played the first one on PC but never got to finish it. I never knew if the story aspect of the game was good or bad.

If we're talking about specific story moments in games, I have to throw in a section from DMC 3. For a game mainly known for it's main character and game play, the story was surprisingly good. And this part when Dante fights Vergil for the 2nd time was the best part of it imo, the way everything kinda just led up to that moment and everything that came after, along with the music during their fight just made it one really epic scene.

I actually bought an Xbox for the Halo CE game, because friends had been pestering me about how good it was and an Xbox 360 for Halo 3. No regrets either after countless hours of fun gaming.

I have to mention the TimeSplitters series on the old PS2, because that series was not only fun but had some really good humour in them. The Story was weak in the first game true, but it definitely improved in TS2 and TS Future Perfect games, and the replay value was off the chart with the Challenges section and the Arcade League parts. Not to mention it had one of the earliest 'map-maker' add-ons too, which was fun messing around with.

They also had some of the best soundtracks ever. Too bad FreeRadical went under, I (and a helluva' lot of other people)was hoping for a TS4.

Wanted to add this game to the list: Silent Hill 2. Although part 3 was my favorite in the series, SH2 as a stand alone game had an incredible and intelligently portrayed story which is really appreciated after multiple playthroughs. The original stories of SH 1 and 3 dealt more with the lore of the actual city and its inhabitants. I wish they would have delved more into that history before Konami wiped its ass all over that franchise.

The Space Marine Warhammer Universe. I actually replayed the old PS2 FireWarrior game and some of Space Marine again recently after seeing it on Youtube and getting nostalgic. FireWarrior was an excellent game at the time and that Intro narrated by Tom Baker just made it even more cool.

It's funny I just ordered some "Warhammer" "Space Marine" books online a couple of weeks ago and only just started to read the first of the "Horus Heresy" novels. I gotta' say I'm really enjoying the lore and history of the Space Marines.

To me the ones that stood out the most are Red Dead Redemption and the first Metal Gear Solid on PS1. Those were two games that I just had to keep playing to see what happened next

L3ggy

Special Operations FOX-HOUND
These scenes makes me cry, even to this day.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Just gotta keep the Bioware love flowing in this thread.

I just played Walking Dead season 2, and that game has a pretty gripping story. I liked the first one but the second one had some really intense scenes and a great ending

This past summer I watched every cutscene from every Metal Gear game in chronological order starting from MGS3 and ending with MGS4. It took a few weeks (I think the cutscene movie for MG4 was over 7 hours) but was easily one of the best things I've done this summer. Epic doesn't even begin to describe how epic that story is.

I'd have to say Last of Us because it's one of the best story driven games I've played in a long time plus it renewed my interest in gaming again after I finished it. Planning on finishing up that Left Behind dlc soon.
