Best Sports Rivalries?

I love how Sam somehow thinks that his favorite team's performance in a given sport gives him some sort of superiority over fans of other teams who haven't had as much success. Congratulations, you jumped on the bandwagon. I'm glad there was enough room. His go-to move when he realizes that I've bested him in an argument is to insult my favorite sports teams. Really, dude? Do I make any of the personnel decisions for the team? Did I decide to leave Mark Prior in the game for too long during the 2003 NLCS? Did I sign Alfonso Soriano as a free agent? Did I fucking trade Lou Brock? No, I'm just a fan of the team. You never ever win an argument with somebody or even look remotely intelligent by pointing out the flaws in someone's favorite sports team. That's just fucking stupid. If I wanted to root for championship teams all the time, I'd change my allegiance every year.

It also amuses me that he thinks insulting the Cubs somehow infuriates me. Like I'm unaware that they haven't won a World Series title in 103 years. Yeah, I get it. They're an awful team plagued by poor management decisions. I'm still going to Wrigley Field at least five times a year. I'm still ging to watch them on television whenever I can. I grew up watching the Cubs. I'm going to support the team every year regardless of whether they win or lose. That's not going to change. That's what being a fan is about. So if you want to talk shit about the team, go head. I guarantee the unoriginal bullshit that you spew out isn't anything I haven't heard before.

Bandwagon? lol. I was born in St. Louis in 1956. Lived there until I was 13 years old. Followed them my whole life. Saw some spectacular Cardinals teams in the 1960s, and even went to Sportsman's Park and watched Stan Musial play before he retired. Lived through the terrible 1970s when the Cardinals were shit.

Hopped on the Bandwagon? Hardly.

Cool story, bro.

I'll assume the rest of my points were valid since you chose to only respond to a couple sentences in my post.

Yes, I'll concede that. But, only if you agree that the SEARCH feature in here sucks ass. :1orglaugh

There is no professional sports rivalries that even come close to the best of the college rivalries. (except maybe Yankees/Red Sox)

Ohio State/Michigan
Alabama/Auburn
Oregon/Oregon St
Florida/Georgia
Texas/Oklahoma
North Carolina/Duke
BYU/Utah
Texas/Texas A&M
West Va/Pitt
USC/Notre Dame
Indiana/ Purdue
Kansas/Missouri
Virginia/Virgina Tech
Army/Navy
Washington/Washington St
Arizona/Arizona St
Mississippi/Ole Miss
Clemson/SC

I could go on and on.

In college rivalries, you choose who to play for.....You don't sign a free agent contract with the other team.

Most college rivalries involve intrastate and interstate rivalries that go back over 150 years. Professional rivalries are about when some overpaid athlete switched teams.

Gotta agree with Baill. Professional rivalries do not even come close to college rivalries. This Saturday, IU plays at Purdue in college basketball. My girlfriend and I (she's a Hoosier, I'm a Boilermaker) will be watching the game at different places with different groups of people. She'll be with my brother watching the game somewhere with other Indiana fans. My sister-in-law and I will be surrounded by Purdue fans at my house. There's a good chance that if Purdue loses, I won't be talking to either one of them until Sunday. Basketball is a big deal here, and that is magnified when these two teams square off. Of all my favorite teams in all of sports, Purdue beating Indiana gives me the most satisfaction.

While we're talking about college rivalries, this is the song that sums up arguably the greatest rivalry in collegiate sports.

The real answer is a tie between Real Madrid-Barcelona and Celtic-Rangers. Not only are they fierce on-field rivals, but the rivalries transcend sports and enter the socio-political realm. Nothing in American sports could even approach the magnitude of these two rivalries.

but really not to take anything away from rivalries in team sports...but it just seems like those are often made because of the fans...not the actual players. I guess back in the day, when rivalries actually meant hating the other person on the other side, you had an argument...but today it just feels like rivalries are often overshadowed by coaches or media sensation...i mean did anybody catch the NHL all star game? Wtf happened?!?!? no more east vs west or any sort of pride...they all get along, no hatred...no fuel for a legit rivalry. And its not jsut hockey, its everything. So i guess its not entirely a bad thing, sports have matured...made things more professional...but there really isnt anything in the past decade id even consider close to what they had back in the day. everythings gone soft...

super depressing is that probably the sport that had the BEST 1 v 1 rivalries...boxing has completely become irrelevant. Now the closest thing boxing has is a rivalry between two dudes who are too afraid to fight eachother...lame
