THE best ? I'll do it by elimination if I may.

Stewart Copeland with the Doors didn't work out, I only know his drumming from The Police and he's been absent for a while so, no.

Alex Van Halen hasn't been consistent with his musical offerings but in my opinion Van Halen is the best backup band for almost any singer and they've proven that. Because they won't get back with David Lee Roth I vote Alex out.

Lars...Hmm, still sounds good. Lars gets a good mark.

So no surprise it's Neil Peart hands down because even today there is nothing like Rush. You either love 'em or don't but this band WORKS and it shows. Tremendous catalogue.
Thanks.

About that Lars Ulrich thing...

COME ON!!! He's not that good... Especially when it comes to playing live... Ever noticed how he destroys ONE while the double bass-drum part?

Neil Peart is A1 in studio and better live... Try to get a look on his drum solo in the R-30 tour DVD...You'll be convinced of his supremacy 100% sure... :hatsoff:

danny carey from tool is fucking amazing. i also like the drummer from the who and the drummer for the wedding present, whatever their names are. stephen perkins and jimmy chamberlain are not too bad either.

Nice thread, nearly impossible to put "Rock-n-Roll" into sub-catagories, theres just too many. Same goes for drummers, skills like technical, rhythmic, timing, interaction, and feeling all play important roles whether they are trained or self-taught. During my playing days I studied or stole from alot of different players, many of which drove me nuts one way or another.

Some more favorites for the list:
Terry Bozzio
Aynsley Dunbar
Chester Thompson
And the Immortal Cozy Powell:angels:

Neil Peart...

Awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfPD7lqA8OM&search=Peart drum solo

Another (awesome snare & electro-xylophone work!!!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NH_mDJjK4UI&search=Peart drum solo

This is brilliant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-VPU4lgRPQ&search=Peart drum solo

Big Band! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-YiXMPwxbQ&search=Peart drum solo

I saved the best solo for last, and this is why Neil Peart gets my vote for best drummer/percussionist in Rock & Roll (and just about every other genre, since he can pretty much play them all, it seems).

This is extraordinary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfNpAF7wSzU&search=Peart drum solo

:nanner:

Hi,

i think the best drummer would be Rick Allen of Def Leppard. He played the drums better with only one arm then some drummers with two.

I'm still gonna nab him if they split up. Can't wait for the new album, but honestly, how could it top the last? Radiohead have never since gotten near the summit of their 3rd album OK COMPUTER and I wonder if Muse can re-reach the stellar plateau they were exploring on their awe-inspiring third effort ABSOLUTION.

FYI

New Muse Album (no name for it yet) -- July 3rd
First single from new album (Supermassive Black Hole) -- June 19th

Alex Van Halen???
Lars Ulrich???
Stewart Copeland???
Neil Peart???

What friggin' year is this, 1984???

Guys, do yourselves a favor and move into the 21st century! Pick up a cd or two from a band called Dream Theater. Mike Portnoy is without a doubt the most incredible drummer maybe ever!!! I don't care if you're talking metal, jazz, alternative, or whatever. This guy does things that are hard to believe!
Just check this link and click "view trailer".

I mean, I love this site, but who the hell came up with those nominees???
Good lord man!!! It's not even close! No competition!
Check out Dream Theater & you'll agree! If you were to only purchase one cd, make it "Train of Thought". Realeased a couple of years ago, this was #8 out of 9 studio releases, but I feel it's their best work yet. Just give it a listen. There are simply no more talented musicians together in one band in the world! These boys will blow you away!

Of the few you've listed, Neil Peart is the best.

If I was coming up with the list though, I would include:

Dave Grohl- drummed for Nirvana, first Foo Fighters album, "Song for the Deaf" by Queens of the Stone Age, the Tenacious D album, and more. He's absolutely amazing.

Mitch Mitchell- very often overshadowed by Hendrix, people often forget how good his drummer was. Listen to "Fire." That's some damn good drumming.

Carter Beauford- another underrated drummer, Dave Matthews Band's percussionist is amazing. Listen to a live track sometime. He's not the fastest drummer, but his sound is layered and complex. He really makes it an instrument, he doesn't just provide rhythm.

Keith Moon- He really. really should have been on that list. Really...

John Bonham - Listen to "Moby Dick." It's basically carried by drumming. Very few drummers could do that.

Also, my two cents on the Lars Ulrich argument. He is not bad, but very pompous and very overrated. Metallica is a great band, but not for it's drumming. The only Metallica song with an impressive drum roll, as far as I'm concerned is "For Whom the Bell Tolls," and that's not all that difficult, just cool sounding.

Jesus... If you'd read the posts instead of skimming them, I said the nominees were some of my favorites and that I created the 5th poll option of "Other" for people to choose as well because I certainly could not list every drummer out there.

For fuck's sake... READ.

as much as i love dream theater and no matter how much i like
mike portnoy (he is a cool guy, you can say what you want),
i say he is, well not way, but he is overrated.
he is a drum machine, and he is fast, but there are drummers out
there that are superior especially technically.
neil peart would eat him for breakfast :)
sorry mike, but that's how it is and how it's going to be (no pun intended, i
hope the rush-fans get it :) )
