Best Free Antivirus Software

What are some of the best free antivirus software, or are the best ones the ones you have to buy? I already know of AVG and Avast.

Malwarebytes as mentioned above is just a scanning program BUT it's pretty well recognised as being the best there is.It's a good idea to update it and run a full scan once a week to back up whatever free AV real time program you use.
Spybot isn't widely regarded as effective these days, perhaps someone will prove me wrong but that seems to be the consensus.
As for free AV programs, there are quite a few around, all of them pretty good.Choose the one you like best for whatever reason but always do a regular extra scan with Malwarebytes.
Above all though is to stop the nasties getting in in the first place. Don't use Internet Explorer for browsing and don't open attachments you aren't sure about.

Clamwin portable can be installed on a usb flashdrive and if I'm not mistaken it is made by AVG

The best antivirus is you.
I don't use one (pure waste of computer resources) and never saw a virus (I use win xp)!.
All is needed is some vigilance and common sense.

those are just spyware scanning programs.

I'm currently using Kaspersky Internet Security for 3 of my computers, but for people's computers I fix, I install Avira Antivir.

so which one is better in your opinion.

That sounds just like someone who doesn't think wearing a seat belt is necessary. It isn't until things go wrong and when they do go wrong it's bad news.

I've never had any problems with Avast. Theres a reason why it's popular- it works!

:glugglug:

I use Avast and think it's OK. But, as someone mentioned, running a computer without any antivirus is also possible, if you know what you're doing.
