Beatles fans are returning to Abbey Road to mark the 40th anniversary of the Abbey Road album photoshoot

At exactly 11.35am, organiser Richard Porter and his band of followers will start walking across the road.

The owner of the nearby Beatles Coffee Shop, who has been running tours for more than 20 years, said he had decided to mark the special occasion because so many fans had asked about it.

"It's the one scene everyone remembers," he told Sky News Online.

"And people come from all over the world to walk across that particular crossing, following in the footsteps of the Beatles.

"It's a form of pilgrimage really."

Having met Paul "many times", and George and Ringo, too, Richard is a mine of information on the group and his tours are popular.

"The Beatles have fans all around the world - probably more from America than anywhere else but a lot of Japanese are keen followers too.

"And then of course now we've got people contacting us from the former Soviet Union and the Beatles have a growing band of fans there - they were banned as bad influences back in the day."

One particular Abbey Road story that has fascinated over the years relates to the rumour that the Paul in the picture was an imposter because the real Paul had died in a car crash in 1969.

"They cited as evidence the fact that the "fake" Paul was holding a cigarette in his right hand - he was left handed - and he was dressed in a suit and no shoes, as you would bury someone.

"Then there was the reference to the Volkswagen's numberplate, allegedly giving the age Paul would have been if he'd lived.

"Those rumours kept everyone going for years but that's all they were - rumours, invented by a group of American students with too much time on their hands!"

Another anniversary from the summer of 69.
