Ask me (julialee89) anything about Norway

Is the scenery as good as good as wikipedia makes it look?

In one word; yes. Ofcourse there are places that dont look as good, and there are places that look better than the photos on Wikipedia. And you have different impressions from the same place if you visit the place in diffenrent seasons (ofcourse).

hi, ive been staying in Aurland for a while with my friends- its was like 7 years ago, but it was like in a dream

Thank you. I've been to Aurland myself. Its nice there.

If the sun doesn't set, do you have a curfew?

Why should we have that? I walked around at Svalbard when the sun didnt set. I didnt get arrested. :D

Do you wish you could put up a big fence/wall along the border to stop all the Swedes getting in, I heard they cause nothing but trouble and breed like rats :2 cents:

I have to confess; it is WE who are breeding the rats. We are secretly invading Sweden and USA with the Norwegian Rat.

Are you ready to back those words up, Norwegian? For I'll tear you a new one.

A norwegian with two butts? Now THAT would get me into the porn industry! Maby I'll meet Puma Swede! She's hot!

Do you think Norway and Sweden should merge?

HELL NO! We have tried that before, and it didnt work too well. And I am too patriotic to merge with another country.

Maybe the gay part of the industry.

What do you and other Norwegians know/think about the Battle of Drøbak Sound? The whole saga sounds surreal and even funny to me, the Norwegians firing defensive shots from 40 year old German cannons against ships they didn't know were German or British and end up sinking the 14,000 tonne German cruiser Blücher which was part of a German force to invade Norway. Then the Norwegians did the honourable thing of tending to the German wounded which allowed the 'German top officers, chief amongst whom was Generalmajor (Major General) Erwin Engelbrecht, to slip away to the nearest road and capture a Norwegian truck on gunpoint. The German leading officers reached the Hotel Continental in Oslo only two hours later than planned, though without the troops intended to occupy the Norwegian capital.' So the German General got to Oslo in good time but left his army behind  Although the Germans still captured Oslo the delay caused by this incident saved the Norwegian king and government from being taken captive in the first hours of the invasion.

WW2 wasnt the finest hour in the norwegian defence. Lets talk about something else.

Stupid Norwegian's.

At least we are smarter than most swedes. :D

"We are vikings! We are badasses that likes Thor and Odin!" I believe many black metal artists had that thougth. And that is the clue.

Don't take it the wrong way but I actually thought you were very brave and noble during that incident when facing a fearsome enemy. :glugglug:

Hordaland? Rogaland?

Thank you. :D To be honest; we didnt have (and still dont) have the best defence as an individual country, BUT under WW2 we did a good job to motivate each other, doing underground work like posting out illegal newspapers that were against the nazis. Max Manus is a famous person that did this. There is a new norwegian film about him.

But there were some sucsesses. For instance the most successfull geriliagroup (is that written the right way?); Bjørn West (Bear West). MILOR (a military organisation based in England) organised five or six geriliagroups that did greiliastupp within one geographical territory. Of these groups, only Bjørn West was an success.

And we had Shetland Larsen (His last name was Larsen and he was nicknamed Shetlands Larsen). He was transporting persons from Norway over the Northern sea to Shetland and England. And he did that in a little fishingboat.

If you want to see films based on real events during WW2 in Norway, I could reccomend:

Ni liv (nine lives),
Shetlandsgjengen (The shetland bus),
Kampen om tungtvannet (Kirk Duglas was in a remake of that film: The Heroes of Telemark).

And in some of these films, some of the actors actually in the real event the film was based on.

Where many badasses in the Sagas come from?

I should refresh my memories from the king sagas, but I do recall from my history lessons both Gyda Eiriksdottir and my favorite viking King Harold Fairhair. He was a badass that won many battles, but after what I recall, he was from eastern norway and moved to Hålogaland (Trondheim). But there were many badasses around the county at that time. I should do some more research.

Back to your question about being big; a normal joke here in Norway is that people from Hålogaland have big mustaches.
