Ashley Graham Gets Candid About Her Family's Racism Towards Her Husband

Ashley Graham and husband Justin Ervin are one of our favourite couples on Instagram, with the plus-size beauty regularly sharing sweet updates declaring her love for her videographer beau.

However behind closed doors, the body positive model has stuggled with her own family's racist attitude towards her husband, who is of African American origin.

Speaking in her new book, A New Model: What Confidence, Beauty, and Power Really Look Like, she described the surprising and upsetting reaction of her elderly grandparents to her husband when she bought him home for the first time.

'I brought Justin home to Nebraska. Now, I should probably mention that Justin is black, and that I didn't grow up around many black people. The sum total of what I learned about African American culture in school was Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and The Underground Railroad,' she says. 'This was more than my mum knew; she didn't even see a black person in real life until she was 18-years-old.

'When my grandparents met Justin, my grandmother was cordial but cold. She greeted him and immediately walked away. When it came time for them to leave, my grandparents didn't even acknowledge him. Instead my grandmother looked me in the eye, with Justin standing behind me, and said, 'Tell that guy I said goodbye.'' she explains. 'I had never seen my loving, hardworking, and wonderful grandma be so hurtful and so racist.'

However, it turns out her husband was more understanding than the model, explaining that rather than simple racism, it was also a case of different generations.

'Justin made me understand that someone like my grandma only saw black men depicted on television in situations involving guns, rape, and violence—situations that perpetuate racist stereotypes against black people in general and black men in particular,' she said.

Luckily, the relationship between Justin and his in-laws has dramatically improved since those first awkward days, with the pair now firm friends - thanks to an olive branch on Justin's part.

'Justin called my grandmother on her 60th wedding anniversary. He's not a texter or an emailer; he's a pick-up-the-phone-and-call-you person, and anniversaries are a big deal to him,' she explained.

'Afterward Grandma called my mom and said, 'You'll never guess who called me.' And from then on out, she loved him ... Loved him.'

Ashley Graham Gets Slammed On Twitter, Accused Of Being ‘Racist’ After Asking Jason Momoa To Do The Haka On Oscars Red Carpet

Ashley Graham has been slammed on Twitter after being shut down by Jason Momoa and his wife Lisa Bonet for asking the actor to show her his Haka dance moves.

Graham was desperate to see some of Momoa’s moves, however the social media world labelled the model “racist” for asking such a thing of the Honolulu-born actor.

Graham had been questioning the pair on the red carpet for ABC when she said: “I gotta get a Haka move. Like, one Haka move, come on!”

Momoa, who previously performed the dance at the “Aquaman” premiere, and his other half immediately looked unimpressed and refused to dance on demand.

The dance originated from Eastern Polynesian culture and Momoa is from Hawaii; part of the Polynesian triangle.

Shortly after Ashley Graham’s powerful cover interview with Allure magazine Opens a New Window. went live on Tuesday, June 18, the world-famous model, 31, began to receive hate mail. Why? Because during her conversation with the publication, Ashley mentioned that she would one day want to have children with her husband, Justin Ervin Opens a New Window. .

“I want to know as much as I can as a white woman who is going to be raising black children,” she expressed. “We’re going to have to have that conversation of ‘Mommy’s white, Daddy’s black,’ and I want to be prepared.” Unfortunately, that statement led to this … “Racism isn’t clickbait, it’s real and evil,” Ashley captioned her Instagram Story hours later. “Tap for a shocking email I received last night (one of many).”

“You are no role model to anyone,” the appalling message began. “Race mixing is evil and against nature. You are not plus-size — you are FAT and definitely not as attractive as you think you are. Big [redacted] do not make a woman — a big heart does, and yours is as small as your pea brain,” they continued.

“There is a silver lining — interracial marriage has a very high divorce rate. So, here’s some advice, dump some weight, including that braindead [redacted] hubby of yours. Get a brain yourself and marry a good white man have a dozen beautiful white children instead of any ugly mongrel [redacted] with your [redacted] hubby.”

To conclude, In Ashley’s own words: “The more you have conversations with people around you that are different than you, [the more] you’re going to learn and you’re going to grow. No one who isn’t black is going to understand a black person’s life, but they don’t have to be ignorant toward [what it’s like].”
