Arrested for racism for Yanks Out chant.

From the Daily Mirror.

Two Liverpool fans arrested for racism after chanting “Yanks Out” while protesting against the club’s US owners have had the case quashed.

James McKenna, 22, and a friend were demonstrating at Anfield against the millionaires Tom Hicks and George Gillett before Liverpool’s match with Arsenal.

But when they shouted “Yanks Out” at a limo with blacked-out windows they were grabbed by police and charged with a public order offence. When they appeared at court the case was thrown out for lack of evidence.
James said yesterday: “I just shouted ‘Yanks Out!’ The police were out on their horses and they grabbed me. When I asked what for they said: ‘For racism’.”

The Football Supporters’ Federation said the police reaction was worrying.

Chairman Malcolm Clarke said: “It would be of grave concern if people who lead protests are targeted.

“We live in a free society and people are entitled to put forward their opinions.”
