Anyone hitting a plateau in this gen (ps3/360) and starting to get.....

Uninterested in the games at hand. Allow me to explain....I seem to finally be getting bored with the games here in the ps3/360 gen we're in. I think that there are too many shooters and everything is sequels. Games just seem to be lacking fun-factor to me.

If you look at a game like borderlands, it is a 1st person shooter at heart but brings a different look and substance to the table. Because of this, I was able to look past its "everyday shooter" components. However, I did get bored with it farely quick, it was great but didnt blow my mind. God of War 3 is gorgeous, however the formula for its gameplay is ancient. I still enjoyed, don't get me wrong but wasnt aching to play it. Gears visuals are great but its the 3rd installment, thats coloring some people uninterested. Halo too.

I think at this point in time, speaking for myself of course, the only way ancient gameplay formulas and genres would be freshened up is a huge jump in visuals. And I'm talking new hardware, not untapped ps3 potential. Its not gonna get too much better than GoW3,uncharted or killzone. I want mind blowing CG stuff but in real time like they're talking for the next wave.Thats the only thing that will "do it for me" right now.

What gets you excited when they start showing bits of a new gen? The graphics of course. And the companies talk nothing but hardware specs cause they know people salivate over that.

Right on.

If it's not a shooter it is a RPG (some with shooting in it now) and if it is not a RPG (some with shooting in it now) it is a sports game (which I am waiting for them to introduce guns to Madden and NBA) and if it is not a sports game it is a racing game.

Games are watered down. Linear just about. Compare Morrowind to Oblivion. Oblivion was the poster sextoy for the 360. A lot of folks jumped on the gaming wagon for the 360. Now imagine if Oblivion played and was as difficult, and by difficult, I mean old school RPG for the hardcore RPG players; and if you were new, if you were patient, you'd learn how to play it and have a good time. Instead, what is it? Some linear piece of shit with a beautiful forest to walk around.

Dead Rising. I put up with a lot of trash talk on this game. Fuck that! That game is not hard. It is not harder than what the NES Ninja Gaiden was! If you sat down and learned the game and how to go about in it you were good to go. You would level up and be slicing and dicing zombies in no time. You had to level up. You weren't going to do everything starting out at level 1!

Now what is it? You put the disc in, jack off during loading screen waiting to play the game, and then point and shoot. If you die you start back from where you were two minutes ago and have no consequence of thinking it out and actually performing a real ACHIEVEMENT. Beating the game using your own three pound brain!

What do I look forward in a next gen game? Story line, franchise, who is making it, and originality. Sadly a lot of original titles that could have made it big flopped like a fish out of a barrel of water. Think about that metaphor.

I could go on, but, I feel I'd be preaching to the choir.

Nicely put whimsy. This is why I can get excited still about a game like Uncharted 2. Graphics are insane, adventure/shooter/fighting elements to round out gameplay, huge online component, edge of your seat action and story telling, polished to perfection and most importantly alot of fun do to its multi faceted perfections and substance.

Its a very unique game that doesn't come around often and thats the sad thing. Imagine a ps4 or nextbox pumping out a shooter like Gears, call of duty or killzone with CG quality visuals on your HDTV in front of you. Lack of substance or originality would be all forgiven due to its epic look alone.

Thats what I need to get excited about games again. Especially when the weather is perfect right now to do outside activities.

I love graphics and where technology is going. Awesome stuff. If graphics is going to be the only important factor forget that. I want a great storyline over graphics any day of the week. That doesn't mean make it shitty with a good storyline. Balance it.

Gears of War 1 was awesome! I enjoyed the hell out of it. Only game I really felt the urge to back and play each difficulty level, and I'm still on Insane with the last guy due to fatal mistake in the beginning of the stage, but I played the hell out of it. Great gameplay, decent storyline, graphics were killer. Good times!

Dead Rising is the type of game I sit back and look in awe. The graphical content of that game is superb! The storyline is your typical zombie flick storyline, fuck the storyline! We hear zombie plot we expect menial acting and decent quality, but in the end, all we want is to kill zombies 1,000 ways from this Sunday!

Bioshock. I adore this game. This game is one of the games that hold a near and dear place in my heart. The graphics are great, the cast is awesome, environment is just grand. However, the Little Sisters, these video game characters are just so adorable. I love watching them walk down a hallway with a Big Daddy carrying on their little conversations. Made the game, despite the dark environment, come to life for me. I haven't played the second one yet. I don't know about it. I might pick it up cheap.

In the end, I have more memorable games from the PS1/PS2, and my Xbox, era than any other era just about. Good times. Can't beat it.

I get excited over games when I see a sleeper hit and I take a chance on it despite reviews, despite opinions, despite what blogs and forums say. I've done that a good bit of times and I've always been so pleased I broke out of the generic game veins and went my own route and decided to take a leap of faith.

Your thinking and enjoyment of this just proved my point....you said you loved Gears 1 right? Well if you remember, when Gears 1 hit xbox360 early in its life cycle, everyone was in awe over the graphics. There was never a game that looked so good on a console. That was like the defining game of what this gen we're in can bring to us. Once again, the problem is that its old now, games have been looking better then that for awhile now and Gears 3 to me, I can live without.

Right. Then again that was a whole new original title. We have a sequel and basically it is turning into Halo. Halo came out and this game was kick ass and awesome! It had people lugging their Xbox systems over to family/friend's houses to get into some multi-player fun, Halo parties, as they were called. It was a new sight, scene, and no body knew about it. It came out and people picked it up, got to play it at Electronic Boutiques, instantly enjoyed it.

What happened? People started whining about what should be in the sequel. Dual wielding, online play, this and that and every thing under the sun. Whiny little fanboy bitches. Well, Halo 2 dropped, this title is no longer a obscured title. It has a large following. Do the math.

People didn't really know about Gears of War except it was made by Epic and Cliff Bleszinski, who, with his Epic team, does kick ass Unreal Tournament games. Well this game drops. It's kick ass. Graphics are looking sexy as hell in the beginning life of the 360! People had no idea what to expect except for what they read in previews and online forum rumors/gossip. It was exciting on all fronts! Well, what happened? Sequel time. What happens then? People start bitching about the first one and its faults and what they should do in the sequel.

I think you might see what I am saying here. A game starts out obscured, but once it gets a large following and really popular, the nasty side will show at some point or another.

Graphics are great. Real great. To compromise the whole video game industry just to appease the graphics crowd and easy going gamer crowd. Slippery slope.

I don't know because I never got addicted to a game before Afro Samurai. Playstation is totally infiltrating all other facets of life such that it becomes hard to go an entire day without playing it. The only other time I think I was addicted to a video game was Tekken 2 demo on psx. Only because it was the only game I got with the system... that. And pong. Check out. http://www.liquid.se /pong if you r really bored of ps3. :glugglug:

Gaming has been dumbed down, it is as simple as that. It isn't made for the hardcore gamer anymore. It is a business that is now pointed to the casual gamer. And really, as much as I would like to put the blame on Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are just as guilty for allowing their systems to be dumbed down to this level. Look at Final Fantasy XIII. It is a part of a legendary series that is a favourite of the hardcore crowd, and look what it is. It is dumbed down for the casual crowd. There are save points everywhere, the game gives you experience points so you can have a chance to win, and the computer pretty much does everything for you already. Even something like Metal Gear Solid 4. No way am I putting down this masterpiece, but think about this; the first three games were about stealth. If you tried to gun your way through the game, it meant a quick death. Not so much in MGS4. The game is made so you can gun through it without difficulty. Why? I don't know, maybe because the makers knew that a casual gamer would be put off by the difficulty of stealth gameplay.

Another thing I put the blame on is Halo and Call of Duty. First person shooters have become the most popular genre on the market thanks to them, but there is so little originality in these games. Every shooter is pretty much a carbon copy of one of those series. There is nothing original in the genre. Maybe that's because they have nothing else to add. Remember when GoldenEye came out and it revolutionized FPS's? I do. There hasn't been anything like it since the original Halo. It is all the same now, just with a new shade of paint. An original shooter like Dead Space: Extraction - an excellent game - fails, despite its originality and the fact it is one of the better games on the Wii. And there is no excuse for that.

On the contrary. How many times I remember wishing I could play DVDs on my original playstation??? So now I can watch vids from my computer on my ps3. So... its way better now that video game systems are like movies, games , and music all in one. It is the complete package IMO. The only thing is that video games are video games... like its not supposed to be like really thaT CHALLENGING IN THE FIRST PLACE. Why I don't like Wii and the new playstation thing where youhave to stand up to play and everything... Call me lazy but I like playing video games without having to get up and move around. Anyways I'm fucking drunk time to go smoke a spliff and play Afro samurai
:thefinger

Ok but Halo is not original right likeAfro Samurai, has a movie to it, a TV show, and soundtrack, so it's like PS# is the be all, end all to Entertainment. (Plus I can watch pron)

the only thing is with playstation it should be able to play xbox games. also why are some games on xbox not on ps and vice versa? there is the plateau...

like if I could play playstation on my computer then i would because really its all just computer games anyways so i think its impossible

i don't know if there was a plateau, how could there be ? It's like that thing how technology advances every 20 years or so there is this plateau, but now what? it only gets better... in essence its only nature. theory of technological evolution

edit: merged your 4 posts into 1, no need to make 4 different posts in a timespan of like 2 minutes, makes it look like posting for the sake of a postcount ;)

i'm enjoying all these great games ...be it on PC, xbox, or ps3 ...i'm having some good fun.

right now i'm addicted to MAG on the ps3 ...which is probably the most underappreciated title so far this year. 128 players versus 128 players with no lag is pretty amazing ...not to mention a helluva lot of fun.

God of War 3 was great, and Battlefield Bad Company 2 is really good, too. then you have titles like UFC 2010 (i loved the 2009 version) and Halo Reach coming out ...and i'm sure i'm forgetting some others ...its all good.

Also, Killzone 3 and Gears of War 3 coming out in the not so distant future. there's a lot for me to get kinda excited about.

keep em coming!

Lach, Whimsy and Plasma, I couldn't agree any more with you three there, for the last, what? 3 weeks I've been playing PSX games, such as FF7 and 8, next week I'm starting on MGS1.

Plasma, you mentioned the legendary franchise by SE, FFXIII was boring as hell after you've beaten it, I remember when I first beat FFX, I restarted it the first second the ending credits were over, the one game that made me do that was MGS1.

The games are so dull compared to the 90's and early 00's, the games back then had a soul.

me too. i'm bored of this stuff.

i just play Dragon Age again and again to see all the characters bios/relationships.

but basically all games seem boring.
( i have 360 )

EDIT :
yeah : i consider myself a lover of FPS games but i 8 Halo and COD . and btw i only played
Gears 1 so i'm not excited by Gears 2 & 3 .

Maybe it tasted like chicken?

How did it taste?

well i played it but not onto mine xbox360.
( played some minutes )
i tried it onto the
360 of a friend. No feeling from/for that game . And no fun.

Instead i played Halo 1 on PC when it was out ( the first days ).
it was good but it's nothing compared to Half Life.

( sorry for my bad english )

I actually agree with this. Games anymore are all so similar and as far as the consoles go I think EA stated that they have maxed out the potential with the 360 and I tend to believe them. Definitely time for a new console and some fresh ideas with games

Was telling Whimsy this, with Sony Move and xbox natal coming out, I think we are very far from seeing a new consoles light of day. I can't see them wanting to talk about new hardware until they see how this motion thing goes for them. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see anything for another 5 years and to me that just plain sucks, bad. I'm bored now, I don't wanna have to wait that long:(

Yea I read an article stating that they think it will be another 5 years until we see a new console but I am hoping this november shows otherwise. If not I am close to selling both my consoles. Dont really see the point in them anymore when every game is a disappointment

Gotcha. I'm actually looking forward to Red Dead redemption cause its different, new NHL hockeys are good, maddens too. Killzone 3 might be good and maybe if theres a Uncharted 3. However, those games are "if's" and "far betweens" and not even close to enough to keep me busy for another half a decade. This sucks, lol.

PC's always evolve with better graphics cards and all but I'm a straight up console gamer and don't have enough $$$$ for a killer PC.

I believe movie games are destroying the video game industry too. This whole let us appeal to everyone because they like a movie or TV show. Screw them! You like games, we want to play games! You like movies, we want to watch movies. You like TV shows, we want to watch TV shows! Just because it is successful on one medium does not mean you have to bastardize, rape it, and then butcher it in another medium!

I love video game novels if done right. Resident Evil. Mass Effect. Halo. That doesn't mean I would want it as a movie, as a TV show, as this or that. I love the game! Let me have my game with the same quality.

This is the problem. You get bigger you start finding yourself blending. That is why everything is coming off as the same. They found success and they are spreading that "success" to every other video game genre.

Shooters. RPGs (with shooting elements.) Sports. Sports matching up with RPG elements. It's all about sales. I understand the gains for profit and making money. However, keep it up, it's going to blow up in your face and you will be left with, guess what? BURNT MONEY! Catch your money on fire with combustion. Hold the money in your face, it blows up in your face.... you lose out. Because you sold out.

I really, really want to get into this. However, I am enjoying this thread, I am enjoying sharing my tidbits of opinion. I love seeing what people have to say about it. Let the conversation commence!

In fact, let's turn it into a RPG/Shooter thread! I give XP to Lachemo for starting the thread. Level up 1 level.

I shoot rawDaDy. Negative XP.

I RACE away from this thread! Level up 1 level for me!
