Anyone here done CrossFit?

While I wouldn't use a rack for curls, there is a benefit in that a the larger in circumference the bar's handle is the more it builds hand strength and helps build grip....and the thinking goes that if you are already lifting that weight for something else and you have the grip strength to hold on to it there isn't much of a reason to not use a thicker bar to keep building that strength.

Of course most people that do it are probably not thinking about that or care about grip strength and are just doing it to do it.

I think most guys in the gym tend to do it for 1 or 3 reasons.

1. To get big arms. If you're body building, yea, you have to do it. For strength? You'll get it from deads, rows, pulldowns, chin ups, push ups, etc.

2. To impress the chicks. Yea, ask those 17 year olds how well that worked.

3. They're under the impression it's one of the core workouts.

In the end, I don't think there's any harm to it. But I rather personally not waste my time. I can work on improving my grip by trying not to resort to the straps on my deads.

Can't do crossfit because of a bad knee. Actually can't do a lot of weight lifting because of it. I have a friend who does crossfit and she won't stop talking about it. It's almost like people are joining it just to say they are in it cause it sounds impressive. I wonder what the dropout rate for the average place is.

I wonder what the lawsuit rate is for the average place. I wouldn't want to own a crossfit place in the US. No fucking way.

It helps build grip strength, but not biceps size. If I was to tell those people that there were certain exercises or positions that would work better for that than just focusing on curls with an Olympic bar, they'd look at me either like I was crazy or tell me "that's what I do wrist curls for, brah".

A lot of people namedrop it for that reason, I think. I have no problem if you want to do it (even though I don't like the workouts or the whole cult it's started), but if I hear you saying "Well, in Crossfit we blankety blankety blank" and "During Crossfit I had to blank blank blank" and "Blank blank blanker Crossfit" while I'm trying to workout or just continually praising its name like Jesus himself invented it, that's when I have a problem. The fact that I'm seeing the Crossfit Games 2-time winner Rich Froning being billed as "the fittest man alive", amongst other titles similar to that, really bothers me. I can be as fit as that guy without doing the same workout he does, but because he represents Crossfit, he's called the most physically fit person on Earth. Give me a fuckin' break.

Most gyms make you sign a liability waiver when you sign up for a basic gym membership. They'd have to do the same thing for crossfit gyms, and they probably drill it into your head that its demanding. I bet these places get a lot of twenty-somethings who come in thinking they've discovered an easy way to get ripped from 30-second Reebok commercials.
