Any Jazz fans out there???

Okay, so I don't start many threads, but I've been listening to Jazz all day and reminiscing about when I actually used to have time to play more (used to be an avid jazz drummer).

Needless to say, I was wondering who your favorite Jazz Musicians are, mainly because I feel it necessary to widen my library. Here's some of mine:

1. Miles Davis
2. Diana Krall (for those of you who have not heard her earlier stuff and/or her Live in Paris album are missing the fact that this girl grooves on piano better than most Jazz musicians... I would venture to say her piano playing is better than her singing).
3. Herbie Hancock
4. Art Blakey
5. Josh Redman

One other no-name that most people might miss... a girl by the name of Orna. She is not that well known, but is a wonderful Jazz singer from South America. I'm not usually into singing with Jazz, but this girl, and the trio she plays with, is just amazing! Just go to amazon and search for her.

I am not fluent with Jazz musicians, but i do enjoy jazz music, especially at night when it is a real comfort to listen. There is just something about it that makes it peaceful to listen to. :sing:

Jazz is one of those musical styles I never really had time for, but now I'm getting older, I'm beginning to take an interest.
I do quite like 'smooth' sounding jazz..very relaxing

I love the kind of jazz you can only hear in a smoky little club - a pianist, a bassist, and a drummer using brushes (not drumsticks). Trumpets/saxes are WAY cool, too!

Ellis Marsalis, Miles Davis, and Thelonius Monk all the way! :)

It's good to be the king...
I was more interested in Jazz-Funk when I was younger (Roy Ayers especially), but I have bought the odd Jazz record here and there.......

well...since you're a fan of miles and one of his proteges, herbie hancock, you might enjoy some others who came thru the miles camp over the years:

chick corea (as u seem to be a piano fan i think you'll enjoy him. he also has some great duet cds with herbie. his 70's supergroup Return To Forever is not to be missed if you're into fusioni)
pat metheny (his works over the last 10 years or so lean towards world music but have great jazz overtones)
roy hargrove (a trombonist who plays with an awesome quintet and sextet)

some others:
ornette coleman
john coletrane
ahmad jamal
thelonious monk

some vocalists:
kurt elling (awesome vocalist)
andy bey

my headache prevents me from further spamming the thread but that's a good start...

Banned
There are a couple of good things in the experimental field, jazz based formations, I mean.

I rely on some Dizzy Gillespie rather quite often.

Here´s a thread I´ve missed...
I´m a big fan of bop music like Dexter Gordon,Johnny Griffin,Thelonious Monk,Bud Powell,Fats Navarro,J.J. Johnson and Milt Jackson among others.

It's good to be the king...
Saw Flora Purim (with Airto & his Forth World band) at Ronnie Scotts years ago.

Also have early George Benson, Herbie Hancock & Stanley Turrentine. But as my previous post stated, my first love is Jazz-Funk.

[edit] Dianne Reeves - Hello, Haven't I've Seen You Before & Sky Islands are particular faves..

(ps: I won't pry any further, but suffice to say that I hope the ban on bobblez is temporary)

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
I can dig some jazz once and a while...saw Jon Luc Ponty once at the State theater in Cleve Oh. once. I can't tell you who does what...beyond the obvious, like Stanly Clarke, or Al DiMeola...But I can dig some hot old school piano, like Oscar Peterson, or Thelonious Monk. Not into the vocals at all and the brass only slightly. But some new age like Cusco or Quintana and Speer, I like the electronic stuff.

acid jaz is some good shit. but dont really listen to the regular stuff. respect but not my type of music.

Miles, Coltrane, Corea, Scofield (watched him live, twice), Hancock are all here. Some known musicians not mentioned that I like are Marcus Miller (live once), Dave Weckl, Mike Stern (live once), John Patitucci.

Also, one of my early discoveries is Charlie Hunter. Plays an 8-string guitar. Watched him live two times, once in Istanbul and once in Munich and chatted with him too. Very nice, down-to-earth fella. His older works are better in my opinion.

Victor Bailey is not well known, he's a bass player. Very good. Live x 2

I have these two musicians in mind, they are not from the US, might help with "widening the library" :)

Erik Truffaz. Trumpet player from France. Live once.

Aziza Mustafa Zadeh, pianist and vocalist from Azerbaijan. Especially recommended is her Dance Of Fire album.

I have always respected and appreciated jazz. But over the last 2 to 3 years, I've actually grown to LOVE it, to the point that it's now become my favorite type of music.
What has impressed me the most is the "musicianship" (skill level) of the players, many of whom I've now come to know as jazz legends!
An example of this musical excellence is clearly on display in the following live Fourplay performance of "3rd Degree", a difficult piece featuring 4 bona fide legends:
Chuck Loeb (guitar), Bob James (piano), Nathan East (bass), and Harvey Mason (drummer).

Never have I seen a bass player exhibit such elaborate "finger work"... wow, impressive!
note: This piece was written by Chuck Loeb (RIP).
