Been on Fluvoxamine and Risperidone for a couple of years now...The pills have been able to help me. The good thing is they are not addictive.

Amitriptalyne up to 30mg a night, technically I'm taking it to help with nerve pain but I guess the Dr's thought it would improve my mood as well. It gets me to sleep which was something I was struggling with due to the pain but it gets hard to wake up and even then you feel tired all day, it also has weird effects on my mind which are hard to put into words, you almost feel like freaking out but something subdues you and sometimes you can't think straight/clearly. I was supposed to go up to 50mg a night but when I hit 40mg I developed an unbearable tingling in my hands so don't go above 30mg, if I ever miss a few days you start feeling ill so you have to keep the dosage up or wean yourself off slowly. Had depression for years and never used anti-depressants but this nerve pain problem forced me to give them a try, I would only recommend taking them if your depression is seriously affecting your quality of life, bear in mind they may have a placebo effect where you actually feel better because you think by taking them your mood will improve even if they are not actually doing anything chemically in your brain. St John's wort is a herbal alternative to anti-depressants and maybe give acupuncture a shot if your not happy with the meds. Good luck!

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
A good friend of mind was on anti-depressants. I wouldn't recommend them.
She was better just facing her demons.

Is it just me, or has a porn board attracted a relatively high amount of people with depression and anxiety? Or, is this just a huge problem among the general population?

Natural sunlight does wonders. I'm not saying you're a recluse or anything, and its tough to get out in the winter but it helps.

I think pills would do more harm then good. Just my opinion though. I'd rather get over it solo.

Nikki, this might be a stretch but.... have you considered altering your life / surroundings? Do you live in a hectic, anti-social big city? Do you hate your job?

What I'm getting at is, perhaps a do-over. You know, you and your BF move out to the country, or up int the mountains. Get away from the every day RAT RACE. Eat organic, less meat, more fish and veggies. Lay off the sugars like twinkies, junk food, etc.

Today's doctors seem to take the easy way out, and the first thing they want to do is prescribe a drug that our bodies were never intended to have in our systems.

I hope for the best for you. Good luck. :)

Clinical depression is actually rather common. And there's a huge difference between your typical "i feel depressed" blues and clinical depression. I can't say whether Nikki is clinically depressed or not, her psychiatrist can diagnose her there. Thing about clinical depression though is that you can't just "get over" clinical depression or "be more positive. Something is physically wrong, it's a chemical issue with the brain, usually a lack of serotonin. Getting out more doesn't fix that. Drugs can, but not always because brain chemistry is tricky, and serotonin might not be the particular problem as several different imbalances, or combinations thereof, could be the issue (dopamine for instance).

And just to have it out there, a lot of the reason that people who actually have clinical depression suffer in silence and don't get treatment is because of advice like that. It tends to make people think there's something wrong with them as an individual and that it's not a real problem. A lot of people don't understand that thoughts and moods are a product of the brain, a physical organ and that as a result often something can be physically wrong. Telling people with clinical depression to change their lifestyle or be more positive is a lot like telling someone with a broken femur to walk it off.

Not bagging on you personally there STD, as it's common and there's been a lot of it in this thread before hand, just tossing it out there because it should be out there.

We're depressed because we all secretly harbor dreams to be pornstars and this board is as close as any of us will ever get.

I think depression is more commonplace now. Even if you're not clinically diagnosed, with the state of things nowadays, I think it's normal to feel anxious or in low spirits about the present or future.

II Wasn't dismissing anything by saying get some sunlight. Sunlight raises the levels of serotonin in the brain. Many clinics sell lamps that mimic sunlight for this reason specifically. I'm not being an asshole and saying "get outside and be normal!!". It's why many people who work midnights suffer from depression and similar mental illnesses. I'm sure you know this, but I feel I may have been misunderstood in my other post.

Sunlight is also the main way we can get Vitamin D, not only does lack of Vitamin D weaken our bones but also worsens chronic pain so many people feel more pain and misery in the winter months or anytime if their lack of sunlight exposures lowers their vitamin D levels, feeling weaker or in pain naturally makes us feel more depressed. I've started taking Vitamin D supplements recently (my levels were low) as we haven't been getting much sun in England the past few years and I realised the hours when the sun is out I'm working indoors, many doctors recommend holidays in hot countries to people suffering from bone or pain disorders.

Ah, sorry.

And that is true about sunlight and serotonin. However the only thing that's required for sunlight to boost serotonin levels is for the light to enter your eye. Even being in a room with a window helps, and about 30 minutes a day is generally sufficient. So... someone would pretty much have to be a recluse for it to cause anything more severe than a mild ennui.

My sister (according to her) had an entirely positive experience with Prozac. I had an entirely negative experience with Zoloft. Anti-depressants seem to be very different from each other. Something to keep in mind.

I can only give you the story from the otherside, the perspective of the person beside the person suffering depression. My ex-boyfriend of 5 yrs took many different medications initially (Zoloft being one of them) before he found the anti-depressant that worked for him. This seems to be a constant through all the people I am close too suffering from depression. Its a trial & error over a what can be a long period of time due to some medications not taking effect until a month or so after the body has absorbed & adjusted. Zoloft I found to be quite scary, my ex was very emotional & also suffered from hyper-tension but on Zoloft he was emotionally void, he couldn't & didn't feel anything & I must say that was very scary to watch. He was alert & functional but he was no longer 'him'. He also tried to commit suicide whilst on Zoloft which I find to be a very bizarre side effect for an anti-depressant, you would think that it would be trying to prevent you from doing such actions... Your boyfriend must be a loving & supporting soul as being the partner of some one suffering mental illness you cop the brunt of the emotion & the pain. As much as I tried to help my guy in the end I could take no more after 5 years & had to come to the realisation that I could not help him as he did not want to be helped as he still hadn't come to terms with his illness. I finally learned that you cannot help someone who doesn't want or think they need to help no matter how strong & supportive you are. I just want you to know that you can take all the medications but they only assist you or put you in the right place to help yourself - no drug will rid you of depression. :2 cents:

I'm on meds against depression and anxiety for a couple years now. Worst side effect is that I gained about 50 pounds on weight! :(

yep. you should see the hospital bill i got today. over 15 grand for just having some pain looked at. id say...5 minutes of questioning. 30 seconds of listening to my breathing, and 30 seconds of poking me in the belly.
Oooh oooh, may I poke you in the belly? I'll even do it for free! And for longer than 30 seconds! :rubbel:

Don't forget that their is a recession so there are many people stressed and worried about money, their house and money. When the environment is bad how are you suppose to be happy?

This hits a chord with what I posted. Keep in mind, I was prescribed Zoloft in 1996, and I only took it twice, so it's not like I have a clear recollection. But I was not me, it was very scary, and I have no idea what might have happened if I had kept taking it. The only clarity I had left was the part that told me to STOP RIGHT NOW before I regret what comes next. I flushed what was left, never went back to the VA again, and decided to take my lumps as me rather than someone else.

You say things are good but you're not happy. Hard to keep your mind clear still. I've lived most of my life struggling through life's everyday stuff. Kept my level head and took one day at a time. Here's what happened. I made it to the point a couple of years ago when all of that stuff was behind me. Things became good. Too good. I ran out of problems. THAT began to bother me. Was this stretch going to come to a crashing halt? When will the next shoe drop? This was on my mind and affected me worse than any of the other stuff I had gone through.

It was such a weird thing to occupy my mind so I asked a Priest. I told him about my situation and how I understood how crazy this worrying was. I needed an answer to ease my mind. He told me to just go with it. Don't question it, just ride it out. As long as you are doing the right things then enjoy. No reason to feel guilty. Funny how that answer came about, I knew my anxieties made no sense and he just said "Sure, thoughts like that make no sense. Get rid of those thoughts and your problem is gone" Sure enough, I just got hit with the big "Duh" hammer. Enjoy the ride.

I also suffer being an 'overthinker'. I can be watching the tv and drift off into no mans land and miss whatever was happening on the tv. I can have trouble going to sleep thinking about simple mundane things. I was on the same anti depressant as you (called Aropax here) for years. I was never prescribed any other help to assist the anti-depressants. Initially I felt good. The side effect I got was bad nerves. But that was better than being depressed. But that didn't last. So in the end I was just as depressed as I started out but I had the added side effect to go with it. So I stopped taking them. Took me awhile but I eventually felt a bit better and got some help for once. So like it has been said the anti depressant is a short term fix to aid you so you can then get the help you need but it's no cure. If you can't get counselling or a pyschologist you will need to find another avenue. Maybe a support group or self help books but you need something. I tried both which helped. You start to understand what depression truly is. What thoughts make me feel depressed and you ask yourself why am I having these thoughts? Like the thoughts you mentioned you have when your boyfriend notices another girl. I found the thoughts can come from values about ourselves that have been reinforced by others over time so we end up believing them. So try to notice what thoughts bring on feelings of anxiety and/or depression and try to understand why you have them. Also take notice of side effects of the anti depressants and hope you don't suffer too many of them. But ultimately it seems you have people around you who love you which is a big help in itself. Not all of us have that . So seek some extra help and in time you will overcome the depression. All the best :)
