Anti-Depressants?

So lately I've been battling depression and some pretty bad anxiety. I just recently went to the doctor to figure something out and she prescribed me Paxil which is an anti-depressant and is also supposed to greatly help with the anxiety.. I've never been on an AD before but I really needed something to get me out of the way I've been feeling these last few months..

I know every person's body is different and reacts differently to different things but I'm curious to know if any of you have ever taken an anti-depressant and if so how was your experience?

Thanks guys :)

i have battled with all that crap before. i opted out of the "medication" and worked on it myself.

every single person ive known who decided to go on meds for depression and/or anxiety went off the deep end and got worse.

also, you should see the side effects. i asked the pharmacists to print me the ones for prozac and then she gave me 16 pages of information.

i said, thanks but no thanks.

I've never been debressed, so I may not be the right person to give advice.

But maybe you should change your diet and see what happens.

And you could also test how your thyroid gland works.

i'd better say get rid of the drugs, find some nice friends and hang out with them, try having fun and don't think about problem for at least 3-6 hours a day. it'll help, while drugs fix one thing, but damage another thing, get rid of drugs, this is more psychological thing. just try finding friends, talk with them and think positive. give it a try.

Luckily I have never suffered from depression or anxiety but I do have a few good friends who have been battling with the illness all their lives. One girlfriend is a maniac depressant but has been off any type of medication for 5 yrs now another girlfriend has obsessive compulsive disorder which makes her depressed so they treat her with anti depressant medication. The latter put on a lot of weight whilst on the medication & for the first 12 months was a bit spaced out & used to nod off quite similar to smack (heroin) addicts. My personal opinion is the medical fraternity still do not understand the human brain or mental illness enough & a lot of the time I feel mental health patients are like guinea pigs, testing & trying many new different drugs until they find the one that works for them. The mind is so powerful & your perception of where & who you are in this world can be altered by changing maybe a few things in your life & figuring out why you feel this way at this particular time. If you can get away from this depressed anxious feeling on your own without medication please do so, but if you need something to help you get through this 'rough patch' then that's what you may need to do & only you can decide that for yourself. Sometimes I think Doctors find it easier to hand over a script than trying to find the root of your problem & with all the side effects & later physiological problems that develop due to taking such medication for long periods of time can override the initial good. Whatever you decide I wish you all the best & hope to see you on top of all this real soon, your far to beautiful to be unhappy! :angels:

I have someone very close to me who started anusing his family memvers, verbally and physically, once he started taking anti-depressants. He had t get arrested twice and see four different doctors before someone finally figured out he was on the wrong medicine. My advice? see a therapist.

some more hands on advice: if you start losing it while on the medication, you're not going to realize it.

other people will.

and you will argue with them that you are fine, and get all pissed, and be completely oblivious.

i lost a couple of great friendships and relationships due to the downward spiral of mental medication.

lolita is right. no one really gets the mind yet. there's a lot of theories on depression and anxiety. but thats all they really are.

try a diet change too. it helped me. as crazy as it sounds.

and like jaana, one of my friends went from anxious to criminally insane on meds. been arrested loads of times when he never so much as jaywalked before em.

My thyroid is normal because it is checked regularly since my mom had thyroid cancer..

The problem is, I have friends.. Lotsa friends.. but I have no drive or desire to go and do things or even see those friends when I'm depressed..

Trust me if I could I would but I have no insurance and have been out of work for a while so I cant afford a therapist..
Right now the doctor I see is at a free clinic.

My boyfriend promised he would monitor me on them to make sure I'm doing ok.. as for changing my diet. For the llast few
Months I've watched my diet closely and did everything in my power to eat only things withoutppreservatives and refined sugar
It has definitely made me more clear headed and healthy feeling.but it never got rid of my anxiety or depression..

I feel like I actually notice my anxiety worse now since my head is so clear .. I literally have a horrible anxiety of making a lefty
turn while driving.. it sucks.. :(

The only thing that Paxil did to me is make it almost impossible to have an orgasm. Lexipro just had me staring off into space and drooling, friends had to tell me that I wasn't the same person anymore.
Now, on the other hand, I have had a couple of friends that have completely went off the deep end when they went off their meds.

If you do stay on meds remember to talk to your doctor on a regular basis, as you will have to make adjustments to keep in balance.

I hope everything works out for you.

Yeah I read about the sexual side effects but I'm hoping since I'm a multiple orgasm kind of girl maybe this will just ttake
me down to like one ..if that makes sense..

I've never been depressed, so I may not be the right person to give advice.

But try to have a positive attitude towards life, do physical exercise, because I think if the body is good it has a positive influence on the mind.

You can do it Nikki

I ended up attempting suicide via OD'ing on them. My depression was bad, but not that bad. Sad thing is that worsening depression, and suicidal thoughts are common side effects for most anti-depressants.

So my advice? if things start to seem even a little bit worse while you're on them then stop taking them immediately. And yeah, have your boyfriend keep a close eye on you just in case. After all, you're messing around with your brain chemistry, and if things go bad you might not realize they're bad until they're that bad. And have him take you off them if he sees much of any usual change, not just a worsening of your depression since if it does get worse you'll likely attempt to hide that fact (seems like everyone does).

As far as how they work, when they do work, they tend to cut out the highs as well as the lows. Essentially it moderates you. Which, really, can be a mixed bag, and I know people who've stopped taking them because although the bad didn't seem as bad, the good didn't seem as good either, and they couldn't manage to be happy on them.

im telling you, he'll say you're acting crazy and you wont believe a word. seen it several times.

it looks like you're sold on it already, so i wish you good luck. but if it was me, and it was me, id say no fucking way. and did.

hopefully you'll be one of the lucky ones.

I'm not sure about the Paxil thingy Honey. It worked to a degree for me but it did things to my vision(brain). It was like I was seeing in "strobe" with flickering lights and shit. And it got worse for about 2 weeks when I quit taking it. I let my doctor know about this and he switched me to Klonopin and I don't think I have ever felt better,it worked great. So great that when I told him about it he took me off of them?? Now I take nothing. I don't get it.

Well, according to dutch doctors, you don't need medicine. You just need to spend an extra hour or two at the gym and you'll be right as rain in no time.

And they are right, this whole drugs driven culture in the US is ridiculous. But hey money makes the world go round huh billion dollars industry, of course doctors will get you medicine instead of advising you against it.

yep. you should see the hospital bill i got today. over 15 grand for just having some pain looked at. id say...5 minutes of questioning. 30 seconds of listening to my breathing, and 30 seconds of poking me in the belly.

As somebody who has been on medication for most of their life, I've learned that it can help you a great amount, but not without trial and error and some side effects. I was taking a fair amount of cocktails as a kid, ranging from Buspirone to Prozac to Quetiapine, and even now I take a mix of Lamotrigine and Fluvoxamine. Like many other people in my situation, I would try and tell myself how ridiculous and silly it was that I needed medication to help regulate my mood, my depression, etc., so I would wean myself off it and hide it in my room. Surprise surprise, I'd become erratic, my nerves were shot, I was anxious all day, and my moods changed on a dime.

For me, it took many years before I got put on the proper medications that didn't cause any drastic side effects and that I knew balanced me out. It may not be that long a period for you or anyone else, and you may not go through the same hardships I experienced, but medication does and can help. It may not be for everyone, but it worked for me in the end.

Echoing what squally said, anti-depressants will only make you oblivious to how you really feel. Echoing what Petra and Roald said, spending time out of the house will go a long way to getting you out of your depressed mood. You have no drive or desire to do things when you're depressed, do them anyway. Go through the motions. You'll be surprised how much better you'll feel after you do something, even if it's just a ten minute walk.
