Just reading this thread is giving me chest pains!
I actually envy your guys's fish and chips recipes over there. You do get authentic fish and chips over there don't you?
Get rid of the ketchup and try them with mayo, it's light years better.
Chilis always got some shit going on! Southwest egg rolls are gonna be the death of me. Yeah for Cumin!
We do, but because there are so many fish & chip shops, you have to know where to go. There doesn't seem to be one set way of making them, and people have their own particular preferences (crispy batter/soft batter, chunky yellow chip/slimmer brown chip, cod/haddock/hake etc.!). Like marquis2 said, beef dripping is pretty much essential for nice fish & chips.
But, YES!!, when you find the shop that makes lovely fish & chips, it's heavenly (if dangerously fattening). I'm pretty surprised they haven't taken off in the States, I mean you guys would find that smell irresistible (seriously, it's the best smell on earth when you're hungry).
I have to say, there are plenty of manky fish & chip shops in England, it's a process of elimination and experimentation.
Long John Silver is a fast food chain we have that has decent fried fish. Also you have to go to a mom and pop restaurant if you want some authentic style.
Cod is where it's at though. Although I think I had Haddock before and it was good.
I prefer chips from Belguim covered in ketchup - they are fucking amazing

There's a little cafeteria in Brussels wich makes the best chips ever from fresh potatoes
Fries nothing on them that are the best ... From a fast food resturaunt has to be Runza. Although at times they need salt. Where my midwest people to back this up?
Hell my least favorite don't care if they are healthy or not is McD's crap tastic fries. BK's are right behind or in line with McD's
... and this is why I'm proud to be vegan and a part-time raw foodist.
Muslims at my U are vegans too and I always see them with huge plates of fries. In fact, my cousin is a vegan too and he devours 'taters.
