How long do you think it'll take a religious zealot to say that this vaccine shouldn't be used because it only encourages homosexuality, prostitution and loose morals.

Reminds me of the HPV vaccine from a few years ago.

On a much more positive note, I'm extremely happy to see a breakthrough. Knowing someone who died of AIDs several years back, there's nothing more miserable than seeing someon suffer from it.

I'm glad to see a breakthrough. I had a family member who died from AIDS in the 80's and I remember what it was like watching him go through it. I just hope that people don't see this vaccine as a free pass to do what ever they want without any type of protection or prevention.

From what I've read and seen there is a rather large percentage of people in the US who get their medical advice about vaccines - especially the MMR vaccine - from a failed actress and MTV presenter. So on this very subject there really is no limit to the stupidity of people. There does seem to be an anti-vaccine movement growing which is based mainly on faulty science and outright lies. Ever since the Wakefield paper, scared parents have been flocking to these charlatans in ever increasing numbers. And you know what, the number of cases of measles in particular have increased year on yea. There's also nice chunk of change to be made playing up the fears of uneducated parents.

This is of course great news. But as the story says it could be many years before the vaccine is actually available so who knows how many people within this time period will become infected. When all it would take to significantly decrease that number is a little bit of knowledge on the subject of safe sex. Especially in those areas which have been affected most by this disease - Africa for example.

But I'm sure the catholics will still be out there promoting their anti-condom = anti-god agenda. Which just goes to show you what good people they are...
