Age limit for president

Tricky issue. There would have to be some sort of compensation in the text that makes up for the fact that people get older and older over the centuries. So as today, the usual US citizen lives longer than, say, 60, as it may have been in 1776, how old will people become on the average in 2176?

I see more need for action in the IQ area, like Johan. (No, not you, man, your example, that idiot on your picture)

I think 35 is too young. The framers probably set the age at 35 because that was basically middle aged back then. I don't anticipate many people older than Bernie seeking the office. I wouldn't set a age cap. I bet Bernie lives to be at least 90.

Many lived into their eighties.

Benjamin Franklin 84

Thomas Jefferson 83

Samuel Adams 81

The idea that people had shorter life spans in the past is a myth.

These people didn't work in the fields, right? They were all statesmen who didn't have to do any manual labor.

I think we need to look at a broader sample set than the founding fathers and their peers.

35 is not too young today. We don't elect ex-Generals as presidents anymore. We haven't done that since 1950whatever.

We need term limits and age limits for the Supreme Court.

Never said we didn't.

We also need people who put America first.

I did, and my comment still remains. The blogger or websiter you linked cites the Found Fathers who are 18th Century men but the majority of his data points pertain to the 19th century (post-industrial revolution). This is because we don't have many reliable census data points for the 18th century.

The Pilgrims relied on native Americans for food, farming techniques, hunting pointers, etc. in order to survive a New England winter-- Thanksgiving -- The implication is that the Pilgrims (coming from cultured England) were not prepared to endure harsh, barren life on the land.

I wonder if the majority of Founding Fathers lived past 65 or did they die earlier than that?

Yeah, when Jagger Remembers The Alamo it's from first-hand knowledge.

Exactly!

"The following represents a partial list of those who were in the Alamo garrison at one time during the siege, but survived because of their absence during the final assault as couriers or other emissaries."

Three of them have Missouri roots, and we know Jagger's a Missouri fan.
But one of those three was a redhead.
That leaves either James Allen or Andrew Sowell.

So which one are you, Jag?
Inquiring minds need to know!

we have people running for president who are a couple of years away from their life expectancy.

Shouldn't they be at home sipping their applesauce and reading one of their 30 magazine subscriptions?

I agree. These old fart Baby Boomers won't retire.

If I ever got to be president my inauguration would feature a five mile long column of GS14s running for their lives as they're pelted by rocks and garbage.

In all seriousness, I don't think an age limit would make anything better. I understand it might eliminate candidates who could develop dementia or other mental health problems (or physical health problems for that matter) while in office, but a person's health and mental stability isn't always directly attributed to their age. I say that for the following reason...

I work in an environment which is heavily populated by the elderly. I work for people who are between the ages of 70-100 years old. And, you know what? The ones who are in their 90s are often the brightest bulbs on the Christmas tree (I know, lame, I'm sorry). Seriously though, there are people at my place of employment who are in their 70s and have zero mental capability; not enough to make decisions for themselves let alone other people. But, there are people who are 95 years old who are the most level-headed, down to earth, mentally capable, intelligent human beings I have ever met.

An idiot is an idiot. And, if a person is an idiot when they're 80, chances are they were an idiot when they were 40.

I am so iffy about this. On the one hand we have career politicians that their only job is to raise money for reelection. But by the same token, their term limits come up every election cycle and citizens vote for them back in. I don't know, I just don't want an IQ test (wait... maybe?) an IQ test to vote.
