I think Trump can beat Clinton and soundly. There's something going on here that I don't think we've ever seen in American politics. The more Trump says something to offend and he's offending a whole range of groups, the more popular he becomes. People are fed up with political correctness and the SOS in Washington.
Rubio and Bush are my preference (Florida is a must win), but I think primary voters will reject them both as establishment politicians.
And you're right, Trump wasn't and isn't a conservative. But voters aren't gonna care. Of all the candidates, he's the one who will draw more people who normally would never vote. That shouldn't be underestimated.
I like the idea of Trump. I just don't like Trump.
That works in the primaries. That won't work in the general when you need to appeal to everyone, not just Republican voters. The reason why his wacky statements haven't hurt him is because most voters opinions are baked in about Trump, you either like him or you don't. There's no middle. With Trump, you know who his base is. They're locked. But who are the new voters he's going to gain in the general? Hispanics? Blacks? Millennials? Like Jeb said, you can't insult your way to the presidency. What works in the primaries doesn't typically work in the general election.

What's different here is Trump's supporters are not so much the traditional GOP conservative base. He's getting support from across ideological lines and those who are normally unengaged in politics. They are like so many people you know who couldn't care less about politics but he has grabbed their attention. There's a vast sea of unengaged eligible voters out there who will vote for Trump for a number of reasons, his ********* and bombasity being major ones.
These are your people on the street late night comedians like to make fun of.
Then there's the Paris and San Bernardino attacks with more surely to come that will only stoke his support.
You are welcome to dislike Cruz all that you want. But to make a statement that Cruz is not smart is just plain ignorance. People have pointed out that during the debates he has demonstrated an ability to recall detailed information without notes which indicates that he has a photographic memory.

People with autism and alzheimers are often pretty good at recalling detailed information too. I guess to you those people are usually pretty smart. Nobody who carries on with that much god bullshit can be considered really intelligent. An obedient little lamb, perhaps.

I'm really trying to break out of that bi-polar way of thinking. Sure, there's a few current GOP candidates that I would rather not vote for over Hillary, and if Bernie Sanders somehow wins out over Clinton there's no doubt who I will vote for but that's unlikely and that's why I'm really hoping the GOP fields a decent candidate. The best way I can sum it up is that of all the candidates on both sides currently running I don't absolutely loathe any of them and I've gotten over my eight-year's-of-Bush hatred of GOP voters, so sticking it to the Republican base just so I can say, "in yer asses, fuckers" isn't an issue for me anymore. Honestly, McCain or Romney would have made a good president. I'm ready to put the partisan horseshit to the side.

And I totally understand where you're coming from. The good news is that if one of your guys wins the butt hurt will slowly start to go away if your experience is anything like mine, but then you'll end up having to reevaluate the whole situation and ask yourself if it was worth it. I'm still in the reevaluation phase.

And I agree with this too. I wanted McCain over W. Bush in 2000. I'll always remember what the GOP establishment and the neocons did to McCain to keep him from getting the nod - though I still voted for W. over Al-gore. But by 2008, McCain's admitted ignorance of economics and fiscal policy, combined with his choice of Phil "Enron" Gramm and Carly "Did I do that?!" Fiorina, as economic advisors, gave me severe pause. His choice of that chattering nincompoop from Alaska convinced me that the new McCain wasn't nearly what the old McCain had been. No way I could vote for him after he picked that twit to be a heartbeat from the Presidency. As for Romney, knowing what I know now and seeing what I've seen of Obama 2.0, I'd now vote for Romney. But like you, I'm not getting suckered into believing that one party is good and the other is bad. That sort of simple minded logic is why the two majors just take turns shitting on the American people.
Depending on which egomaniacal crook gets nominated by the two majors, I can easily see myself finding a 3rd party candidate to support... depending on who's on offer. I've done it before and I may do it again. Yeah, I know that Americans are too sheep-like to learn about and support someone who isn't a party muppet... so they won't win. But at least my conscience would be clear.
