Abandoned DEBIT Mastercard

WTF?! I returned to my car from grocery shopping, and someone slipped an UNSIGNED Debit Mastercard into my car, via the 1" lowered windows.

What kind of scam could this be?

No thoughts?

My car is one of a limited production run. I also considered that the debit MC might have a RFID or something. So, I also abandoned it at fire hydrant (nearby).

I am dead sure, that this is a new variant of getting people to use the card, or just take it with them in the car.

My advice is:

Drop it some miles away from your place of living. Just to be sure, as you did.

The chips on cards can be traced, and that might be the interest of the person who did this.

Better keep your windows 100% shut in future

I was at a fair a couple of months ago and saw a guy there almost losing his card. Fell on the ground out of his pocket and he didn't notice anything. Told him and he picked it up.

Could have been some trick as well, as I think about it.

You may have been in the store. Someone else who followed you into the store may have dropped it near your car. A third person may have come across it, picked it up and since the card was nearest your car, put it in your car as you had the windows slightly open.

It happened to me in a shopping mall parking lot. But this time it was a New York State driver's license. I picked it up and brought it home. I printed out his address, using word from my computer, onto a security envelope and put his license in the envelope. I mailed it to the person without a return address.

Since the unsigned debit mastercard had no name on it, I would have brought it into the grocery store and given it to the customer service desk and said someone dropped it in the parking lot. End of story.

Drop it off at a police station.

I don't understand people that don't talk to their local police, that's what they are there for.

Same thing goes for people who solicit in parking lots asking for rides or tryna sell you ****, both of these things happen to me and I'm always like, "sure, hop in, I'll drop you off at the police station around the corner, they can help you with whatever you need!", or, "that's great! I know some cops that like stuff, too, and they always like supporting local entrepreneurs!"

You can drop a drivers license off at the post office, just drop it in the mail slot, no envelope, and they will take care of it. Alternatively, you can also take it to the police station or the DMV (DPS here in Texas), and they, too, will take care of it.
