Just looked up a rather cheap way to cross the atlantic:

On a freight ship, packed with cargo containers. The cabins are really okay, and you have captain's dinner every evening, because the staff is rather small. Something like 70 dollars per day. But the trip would just go to the east coast, I would have to take a train or greyhound crosscountry. That would be a trip giving me enough material for a book, and you would not be in it, yet, with you, that would be the icing on the cake.
