Actually, that's not so much abuse. It does not hurt whatsoever, and they go into that position because it's hardwired into the cats that the only time they'll have that feeling is when their mother picks them up by that scruff with her mouth. It's an evolutionary thing.

Or, as Michelle Bachmann would say, it's the devil in cats.

That's what I thought at first, being a big animal lover, but it's similar to grabbing them by "the scruff" of the neck, which like Dirk said nursing mothers will do with kittens.

Though I dislike the practice and have never picked my cats up that way, those that I've had over the years, I can understand the necessity for the vets to do it.

It's similar to "tonic immobility" in most sharks and also I've seen it done with alligators, where they turn them upside down and stroke their bellies inducing a type of torpor. No harm is done to the animals.

This is the vid the gif came from.

Anyway, enough seriousness. Lets get back to the threads theme. :D

I ALWAYS pick up my cats that way. All three of my cats come to me for deep-tissue massage and tugging the nap of the neck is an important part of setting up dominant/subordinate relationships - and properly done, they love it. If a kitten claws or lashes out, a firm grasp of the nape of the neck and gently holding them that way is the best way to train them not to claw or lash out.

It's not only used by mothers but is also a big part of the sexual behavior of cats.

But - back on topic....

15 pages of nothing? What else are forums like these for?

The images from my previous posts are dead...so here's an excuse to post them again.

Perfect murder 101:

Take a boat out to the ocean. Say...100 miles out. Give someone a few cuts on the arms and push em off the boat! They'll not last long. If the sharks don't eat them, which they should since they're bleeding, they'll die of dehydration or drown. Body will never be found!

Or if you already killed em, that would be an otherwise great place to dump the body!

We call it a "Sydney send off". :D I remember a famous case from the 30's of a tattooed human arm found in a shark.
