50 Years Ago: The World in 1963

Wow, it's kinda hard to look through those pictures of civil rights demonstrations. 1963 just isn't that long ago.

The last pic, the one of the bridge, is wicked cool.

I'm glad I wasn't around during the Reconstruction Era (1863-1877)

Was reading a bit about that painful era in America and man...im just glad I wasn't born in those times.

You missed the most important event, the very first Ronald McDonald on his 1963 TV debut

Willard Scott sports a drink cup for a nose as he plays Ronald McDonald in the clown's first-ever television advert

Majestic photos of old Pennsylvania Station show its architectural splendour before it was demolished in 1963 to make way for modern Madison Square Garden

The original Pennsylvania Railroad Station, completed in 1910, exuded an elegance; its sweeping interior is pictured in 1934; it was destroyed in 1963 to make way for Madison Square Garden

This exterior image, taken between 1900 and 1920, shows Penn Station as it runs along 7th Avenue at 33rd St in Midtown Manhattan

Screen legend Liz Taylor wore the golden cape in two scenes from the 1963 film Cleopatra. The leather and gold garment, designed to look like the wings of a Pheonix, were worn in the two most memorable scenes blockbuster

I'm glad I was around back then. Born in 1956. Those were good times.

However, once Eisenhower was no longer the president... and Kennedy got in, we as a country were, and have been, FUCKED ever since.

Don't believe me? Study the history of the political atmosphere when Kennedy took office, and up to present day.

To be honest with all of you, I doubt our votes mean a damn thing. Our presidents (probably since Kennedy) have been selected, not elected.

Sam, I was 11 in 1963...........you're correct after Kennedy was assasinated the country was never the same.

I remember the good and bad times......

Hey Sam do you remember being glued to the TV for every event.......Mercury launches and all the happenings during the assasination,. I was watching TV when Jack Ruby shot Oswald.............wow saw it live....grew up fast not such an innocent world.

Absolutely. Families used to sit (together) in the living room and watch television after supper. It all seemed so innocent back then. Only a half hour of news around 6 PM, and again at 10 PM. Then... off to bed.

You look at those pictures and say those were good times??

Comprehend reading much? Here, let me refresh your memory of what you just read that which I wrote.

The key here is: once Eisenhower was no longer the president... and Kennedy got in, we as a country were, and have been, FUCKED ever since.

Now do you understand?

Those who believe equal rights acts should be abolished need only look at some of those pictures to understand why those acts have to still stand today. When too many narrow minds rule, basic rights cease to exist.
I still find the shot of Thich Quang Duc to be a remarkable one. A man on fire, yet so serene.
And, finally, I find the shot of Ron and Clint Howard rather interesting. We have all watched both grow up...however, the difference between Clint in that 1963 shot and his 1968 roll in Star Trek...well, though he was still a kid in 1968, he was a very ugly kid.

Where as I mostly look back and think of fond times. And, It seems most in here look back and see bad times.

Which means, I mostly look at the present time and think of bad times. Where as most in here look at the present time and think fun times.

Here is an example of today's world

Why did Liberals dislike Chris Kyle ???

A senseless death, after so many close calls in Iraq.

In some ways life was better back then, in other ways it was worse.
"We the people..." is meant to include everyone equally, regardless of skin color or gender, otherwise those words mean nothing.

Do I/we really have to? It'd take days/weeks/months to find out why. Couldn't you just give one or two more lines just to add some insight. It's a comment that really got my attentionWhat would be the difference now had Kennedy not got in, or a Eisenhower type continued?

#5 is ironic to me. 50 years ago there was a tank on the street to promote peace. 50 years later.....
The photos of George Wallace gives me a slight smirk because of his speeches of racial discord and the irony is it was one of the people he was fighting for (blond hair & blue eyed) was the person who shot and paralyzed him. The nurses who had to take of him afterward were mostly black.

Unfortunately some attitudes never change...
