5 dead of carbon monoxide poisoning at Fla. motel

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) — Five young men celebrating a birthday likely died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a car they left running in a garage under their South Florida motel room, investigators said Tuesday.

A maid called authorities Monday after seeing people unconscious through a window. Police spokesman Carl Zogby said that the teenagers' deaths appear to be accidental but that the Miami-Dade medical examiner is investigating the cause.

In a 911 call, the maid described a strong smell of gasoline and said she was concerned because the five young men appeared unconscious. The maid told the emergency dispatcher in Spanish that she opened the door and called out "hello" and got no response.

"They're all there, and they don't respond," she said. "They're sprawled on the floor. I haven't wanted to touch them. I'm scared."

A car used by the group was found running in a closed garage underneath the room. Friends told the Miami Herald the car had needed a jump-start earlier and could have been left running to keep the battery charged. A door to a staircase up to the room had been left open, and high levels of carbon monoxide were found inside.

That's a very sad story and I am sorry to hear about this, my condolences to their families and loved ones. RIP.

I wonder at times if this truly is a peaceful ending as many seem to believe, one couldn't ever really know though I guess.

When everybody in the room suddenly comes down with a headache . . . get outta dodge!
That's how I understand carbon monoxide poison detection.

This is death by fluke and nothing more it seems . . if it wasn't for a dead battery, or if it wasn't for a certain motel with available vacancy, five guys would be alive today. . :dunno:

5 dead Floridian teenagers? not exactly a great loss. they left the car running all night, weren't they concerned about global warming?

This is indeed a tragedy but I'm going to try to say this as respectful*ly as I can. A high school graduate-a*ged kid should know the dangers of running a vehicle in a confined space. There is no good reason these kids should have died. Between the five of them the conclusion should have been obvious. This is truly sad.

it must have been an older model car, because is newer cars the catalytic converter removes so much crap from the exhaust gases that they would have died of hunger before succumbing to carbon monoxide poisoning.

I've said it once and I'll say it again: Everything bad happens in Florida.

I think it can hit you pretty quick and you're out before you notice anything amiss. These guys were not drinking or taking drugs so would've been alert as possible yet still died where they sat/lay. Every factor probably went against them and there's always the chance the carbon monoxide detector was malfunctioning if there even was one. RIP and condolences to the friends and family

My question is, what in the hell do five 16 -19 y/o guys do to celebrate a birthday party in a motel room at 9PM Sunday night less any bottles of booze, no drugs, no chicks . . :dunno:

Sad story I guess... but on the flip side, that is something basic any thinking, breathing human should know.

Point - Darwin.

Or is that 5 points?
