Gritty Sharapova sets up Stuttgart final against Li

Top seed and holder Maria Sharapova battled through a tough three-set claycourt match for the third day in a row on Saturday to book a place in the final of the Stuttgart Grand Prix.
The Russian ended the challenge of home favourite Angelique Kerber, beating the third seed 6-3 2-6 7-5 to set up a title showdown with Li Na of China who put out American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4 6-3.
Sharapova, who was also taken to three sets by Czech Lucie Safarova on Thursday and by Serb Ana Ivanovic 24 hours later, has an excellent record when she is taken the distance.
The world number two had won 28 of her previous 31 three-set encounters and it was the Russian's extra aggression that proved the key against Kerber.
"I'm really happy with the way I fought through the third set," Sharapova told the tour's official website ( Premium Link Upgrade ). "Obviously I'd prefer to win easier but that isn't always the situation you're given.
"I had to play a longer match today and the great thing is I got through. I did my job out there," added Sharapova after winning her 15th straight claycourt match.
Kerber said she would take the positives out of her run to the semi-finals.
"I'm disappointed because it was close and tough today," the German explained. "But I've had a great week.
"I'm feeling good on clay and I will take this experience and look forward to the tournaments coming up."
World number five Li enjoyed a more straightforward passage into the final as she swept past Mattek-Sands in straight sets.
The Australian Open runner-up will now look to improve on her past record against Sharapova, having lost eight of their previous 13 meetings.

Schiavone returns to winning ways with Marrakech title

Former world number four Francesca Schiavone won her sixth career title on Sunday with a comfortable 6-1 6-3 victory over Lourdes Dominguez Lino in the final of the Marrakech Grand Prix.
The Italian, now languishing just inside the world top 50 at 48, has struggled in 2013, losing in the first round of five of the nine previous events she had played.
The 2010 French Open champion, who had failed to progress past the quarter-finals of a WTA tournament since her last piece of silverware in Strasbourg last May, was in dominant form on Moroccan clay and did not drop a set on her way to the title.
Schiavone eased through the first set of the final, breaking Dominguez Lino twice.
The 59th-ranked Spaniard, who was pushed to three sets in each of her four previous matches, gave herself a glimmer of hope in the second set, breaking her fellow 32-year-old to go 3-1 up.
Schiavone immediately countered and despite having to save three break points in the set, wrapped up victory in just over 90 minutes.

Sharapova makes easy work of Stuttgart title defence

World number two Maria Sharapova saved her best performance of the week for last when she successfully defended her Stuttgart Grand Prix title with a 6-4 6-3 victory over second seed Li Na of China to kick off her clay-court season in style.
Sharapova, who had needed three sets in all her previous rounds in Stuttgart, found it easier against Li, with her serve setting her up for her second consecutive victory in the indoor arena.
The top seed, her loud grunts echoing around the stadium, snatched a break at the start, with a sizzling backhand down the line that left Li stranded.
Li sent a crosscourt backhand into the net to give the Russian another break and allow her to go 4-1 up.
The Australian Open finalist bounced back in the next game and grabbed her own first break when Sharapova sent a forehand long after a long rally.
Sharapova was in no mood for adventures, however, and quickly established a double break cushion, then served out the first set on her first opportunity when Li sank a return into the net after another well-placed serve.
The pair traded blows until Sharapova earned another break point and went 4-3 up.
With a superb first-serve figure of 76 percent throughout the game, she kept her opponent pinned to the back and earned her second title of the year when Li double-faulted on the first match point.
In the day's other WTA final in Marrakech, sixth seed Francesca Schiavone claimed her sixth career title as she beat Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-1 6-3 to win the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla.
The match was closer than the scoreline suggested, but Italian star Schiavone was utterly ruthless taking her chances, converting two out of her three break points in the first set and saving three out of the four break points against her in the second while breaking her opponent three times.

Superb Nadal claims eighth Barcelona title

Rafa Nadal became the first player to win four titles this year when he defeated fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-4 6-3 to win the Barcelona Open for the eighth time in nine years.
Since returning from a seven-month absence with a left knee injury in February, the world number five has reached the final at all six events he has played, his Barcelona triumph adding to the victories in Sao Paulo, Acapulco and Indian Wells.
"I'm very happy. It has been an important week for all the Spanish players here and especially for me," Nadal told Spanish television.
"It is an enormous honour for me to win here again."
Having lost his Monte Carlo Masters crown to world number one Novak Djokovic in last Sunday's final, Nadal was on the back foot again against Almagro in a shaky opening.
The fourth seed made a whirlwind start, breaking Nadal's first two service games in cloudy, drizzly conditions on the clay of the Real Club de Tenis.
Nadal battled back with three breaks of serve to take the first set, lifting the rain-soaked crowd with one particular rally which he eventually won after having played a shot backwards between his legs.
The French Open champion broke again early in the second set and steadily pulled away to secure a 10th successive victory over his compatriot and a 39th consecutive win in Barcelona.
"Nico started really strongly, and it was very difficult at the start. The conditions were tough for both of us," second seed Nadal said.
"It didn't start very well for me but luckily I was able to get the very important break at 3-0 down.
"I'm pleased for Nico for his great week. He's having a great season and I wish him all the best for the future."
Almagro was able to make light of his defeat when asked about how he started like a motorbike.
He laughed and said: "Yes, well the motorbike got stuck in the rain.
"Rafa has shown once again why he is the best player in history on this surface. He is one of the greats on the tennis circuit and as Spaniards we are all very proud of him.
"I got a good start but the surface was tricky, though that cannot serve as an excuse, Rafa was the fair winner.
"I'll have another go next year, and try to win it then if Rafa lets me."

Britain's World Group play-off with Croatia to be on clay in Umag

Britain's Davis Cup World Group play-off clash with Croatia will be played on clay in Umag it has been announced with captain Leon Smith insistent that his troops will be ready for the test.
Smith watched on as Britain overturned a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 in the Davis Cup for the first time in 83 years in their Europe/Africa Group I second-round clash in Coventry at the start of the month.
James Ward and Dan Evans were the heroes on the final day after London 2012 Olympian Colin Fleming and Wimbledon doubles champion Jonny Marray had made it 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena.
Britain were then drawn against Croatia for the World Group play-off in September with the tie to be played on clay in Umag, which hosts an ATP World Tour 250 event in July.
And Britain's Davis Cup captain Smith, who could have Olympic men's singles champion Andy Murray available for selection, is adamant his team will be up for the challenge.
He said: "We look forward to the challenge of an away tie on clay and will be ready for this all important match."

ROSOL TURNS GRIEF TO GLORY FOR FIRST TITLE

In 2012, Lukas Rosol made a name for himself by stunning Rafael Nadal in the second round of Wimbledon. Now, the Czech can add the tag of ATP World Tour title holder to his name.
Rosol completed an emotional run at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest Sunday, brushing aside Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-2 in the final. Rosol converted four of his nine break points in the 67-minute victory to triumph on his tour-level final debut. During the ceremony, Rosol dedicated the title to his ******, who ****** away 10 days ago.
“I wanted to dedicate this trophy to someone, so I found the energy,” said Rosol. “ I felt somebody was helping me from up top. It’s not just about me. My ****** has always supported me and my tennis. I felt match after match, my ***** was coming true.
“It could not be better this week. I came here from a full two weeks of practice. I didn't know what to expect of myself. So I’m pretty satisfied with this result… I will remember this week. It was very emotional for me and is something special. I found a way to beat some good players and succeed.”
The Czech became the third first-time winner this season, joining Bernard Tomic (Sydney) and Horacio Zeballos (Vina del Mar). During his run to the trophy, Rosol eliminated three seeds, including No. 2 seed and three-time champion Gilles Simon in the semi-finals, and dropped just one set to third seed Andreas Seppi in the second round. Rosol is projected to rise to around a career-high Emirates ATP Ranking of No. 36 on Monday.
Garcia-Lopez was appearing in his first final since October 2010, when he captured the crown at the Thailand Open in Bangkok (d. Nieminen). The 29 year old also beat three seeded opponents en route to the title match, which included his ninth Top 10 win over top seed Janko Tipsarevic.
“Today, I couldn't play my game,” said Garcia-Lopez. “I didn't have enough power anymore. At the end, he was playing better than me.”

Sharapova shows off 'Shugarpova' candy in Moscow

Fresh from claiming her 29th WTA singles title, Maria Sharapova made a one-day stop in Moscow to present her 'Shugarpova' candy brand to the Russian market on Monday.
The Florida-based Russian insisted that despite her multiple business ventures, her tennis career remains her main focus.
"Right now tennis is the most important for me," the world number two told reporters at an upscale Moscow store, where a small pack of 'Shugarpova' sweets is sold for 175 roubles ($5.66).
Sharapova, who turned 26 this month, said she still planned to compete at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
"(The London Olympics) was a good experience for me. I got a chance to carry the Russian flag at the opening ceremony and winning a silver medal," she said.
"But now I want more, I hope to get the gold in 2016."
Sharapova retained her Stuttgart title by beating China's Li Na in Sunday's final on clay as she continued her preparations for next month's French Open where she will defend her title.

British number one Laura Robson crashed out at WTA Estoril in the first round as she lost in straight sets to Ayumi Morita.
The 19-year-old, ranked 41 in the world, lost 6-2 7-5 to the Japanese player ranked two places below her.
Robson struggled with her serve and had 10 double faults in the 68 minute reverse.
The Londoner has struggled since reaching the third round of the Australian Open in January, losing in the opening round to lower ranked opponents in five tournaments and mustering just two wins.

Henman, Rusedski to play exhibition as Edgbaston honours Ann Jones

Edgbaston Priory Club has renamed its Centre Court in honour of 1969 Wimbledon champion Ann Jones.
Tim Henman, Greg Rusedski and Heather Watson will be joined by another player to contest an exhibition match on June 9 to mark the renaming of the court. The AEGON Classic WTA event then runs from June 9-15.
Jones, also won the French Open twice, as well as reaching six further Grand Slam finals.
Peter Bretherton, president of the LTA, said: "We are delighted that the new Centre Court at the Edgbaston Priory Club will be named in honour of Ann Jones.
"She is, without doubt, one of the all-time greats of women’s tennis both nationally and internationally and so it is only fitting that her achievements and contribution to our sport are recognised in this way at the very Tournament that she helped to bring to fruition."
French Open finalist Sara Errani is the latest name to confirm her participation in this year's event.

Croatia's Karlovic in hospital with viral meningitis

Croatia's Ivo Karlovic, well-known for his thundering serves, is recovering in hospital in Miami after being admitted with viral meningitis, his wife Alsi said.
In a statement on the official ATP website she dismissed reports that the 34-year-old had suffered a stroke.
"Ivo did not have a stroke, as some outlets have stated; rather, he has viral meningitis," she said.
"We ask for privacy during his recovery process. We thank everyone for their support and well wishes."
Karlovic, who has slipped outside the world's top 100 from a career high 14, caused one of the biggest upsets in tennis when he beat defending champion Lleyton Hewitt at Wimbledon in 2003. He last played at the Sarasota Challenger earlier this month.

Murray: Puerto case 'biggest cover-up in sports history?'

Andy Murray has tweeted his disbelief after a Spanish court reached its verdict on doctor Eufemiano Fuentes.
Fuentes, the central figure in the Operation Puerto case, a ***** scandal with possible repercussions across all sports, was sentenced to a year in prison - but the judge presiding over the case also ruled that all evidence in the case was to be destroyed, damaging the chances of understanding the operation's scale and breath.
Fuentes - who is unlikely to be jailed because sentences under two years in Spain are usually suspended - was convicted for crimes against public health, barred from practising sports medicine for four years and fined.
However, judge Julia Santamaria's decision not to release case evidence, including bags of ***** seized in police raids, to anti-doping authorities for further investigations hit hopes that the case would unmask athletes caught up in the doping programme.
Murray, writing on Twitter, asked whether the verdict represented the biggest cover-up in sports history.
"operacion puerto case is beyond a joke... biggest cover up in sports history? why would court order ***** bags to be destroyed? #coverup"
The Spanish anti-doping agency has said that it would appeal the judge's ruling to destroy the evidence.

Gilbert: Don't write Rafa off for No.1 spot in 2013

For Rafael Nadal to bridge a 7,000-point gap with Novak Djokovic in the ATP rankings looks like a tall order, even for a player of his qualities, yet he could still threaten the Serb's hopes of ending 2013 as world No.1.
With the French Open looming large on the horizon, Nadal is back in the claycourt groove as he continues his comeback from a knee injury that sidelined him for seven months.
The Spaniard has won four titles in six tournaments since returning in Chile in February, finishing runner-up in the other two, yet remains in unfamiliar territory outside the world's top four.
Starting in Madrid next week, however, where he suffered a surprise third-round exit last year to compatriot Fernando Verdasco, fifth-ranked Nadal can start making inroads.
While the Mallorcan must defend 3,000 points at the Rome Masters and then at Roland Garros, where he will be chasing an eighth French Open title, the second half of the year looks like being a win-win situation for the 11-times Grand Slam champion.
A stunning second-round defeat by Czech Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon last year proved to be his final match of 2012, meaning the Spaniard will have six months to harvest ranking points and close the gap on those above him.
Djokovic is hoping to finish a third successive season as world No.1 but Brad Gilbert, former world number four and coach to Andre Agassi, believes Nadal has will be breathing down the Serb's neck later this year.
"To me this is the meatiest part of the season," Gilbert told the ATP website.
"You've got two Masters 1000s back-to-back and then the French and Wimbledon. That's 6,000 points up for grabs over a short stretch, and what happens during this time will set the tone as to who has a shot of finishing No. 1.
"Djokovic is in good position now but it still could be a very tight race."
Djokovic, world number two Roger Federer and number three Andy Murray will all be defending sackloads of points after the French Open, and providing Nadal suffers no injury setbacks he will be relishing a pressure-free second half of the year.
Gilbert said Nadal's decision to delay his comeback until after the Australian Open and then skip the Miami Masters was paying dividends.
"What a tremendous effort to be in the final every week he's played. I love the way he goes about his business," Gilbert said. "He didn't rush back until he was close to 100 percent, and the results back up that he made the right decision."

Pakistan Davis Cup elimination appeal rejected

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) have rejected Pakistan's appeal against the awarding of their Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group II tie to New Zealand, the governing body said on Wednesday.
Designated hosts Pakistan were disqualified from last month's Davis Cup tie, played in Myanmar because of security concerns, after referee Ashita Ajigala ruled that the grass court in Yangon had become unplayable and dangerous.
The Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) appealed against the ruling but the ITF's Davis Cup Committee upheld the Sri Lankan referee's decision at a meeting on Tuesday.
"It was the view of the Committee that the Pakistan Tennis Federation did not organise the tie to the required standards, notably with regard to the quality of the two available courts," the ITF said in a statement.
The tie was played in Myanmar after New Zealand refused to visit Pakistan due to safety concerns.
"The Committee noted that the poor quality of the original match court led the Referee to designate the practice court as the match court," the ITF statement read.
"Following the deterioration of the second court, specifically during the second match, the Referee determined that this court was now unplayable and a risk to player safety.
"The Referee also deemed that the court would not become playable in the next 24 hours due to its poor condition, and awarded the tie to New Zealand."
The PTF could still appeal to the ITF Board of Directors, the statement added.

Top seed Bartoli ousted in Estoril opener

Top seed Marion Bartoli bowed out of the Oeiras Open in Estoril in the first round after losing 0-6 6-1 4-6 to Shuai Peng.
Bartoli, ranked 14 in the world, has now lost five times in 11 meetings against her Chinese opponent, who held firm after two one-sided sets to set up a showdown in round two against Romina Oprandi of Switzerland.
The former Wimbledon finalist from France is scratching for form after three straight first-round exits.
"The first match on clay is always tough for me and obviously at the beginning I had a lot of trouble finding my game and my feet on the court," said Bartoli afterwards.
"I wasn't feeling comfortable and Peng Shuai was playing extremely well as well. I just tried my hardest on the court and was able to play some good shots in the second set.
"It was a very difficult draw, but I think it is better for me to have those kind of matches early in the clay court season and try to improve for the big events coming up."

Del Potro ruled out of Madrid Open with virus

World number seven Juan Martin del Potro has withdrawn from next week's Madrid Open because of a viral infection.
The heavy-hitting Argentine reached the semi-finals last year before losing to Czech Tomas Berdych.
"He has a virus and will not be fit to play," a statement on the tournament's website said. "We wish him a fast recovery."
Belgian David Goffin, who was in the qualifying tournament, will take Del Potro's place in the main draw.
The claycourt Masters Series tournament features the big four of world number one Novak Djokovic, defending champion Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal.
