Does anyone outside the South actually care about recruiting rankings? I'm under the impression that it's just something SEC (and to lesser extent, ACC) fanboys like to talk about cuz they can brag about how well their school did in signing a bunch of kids, 1/3 of which will either eventually transfer, get kicked off the team, or be ruled academically ineligible.

I only find it interesting because of all the bullshit that Nick Saban has been pulling. He offered one recruit a scholarship a year ago and the guy accepted only to have Saban withdraw the offer, on signing day! The NCAA and the SEC have grown so disgusted with his cut-hroat mentality, they both passed new rules to reign him in, only to see him immediately break one of them. I know of two rules that were broken last year, the memorabilia display at the clothing store had mountains of proof (pics), and then there was the fact that he introduced a recruit to the crowd at a Bama basketball game. That violation only had 13,000 witnesses, so the NCAA didn't do anything.

The Notre Dame press talks a lot about recruiting, because, even though they're a pretty sub-par team, they draw top recruits. Their recruiting score is always really high, so the hope for the next season springs eternal.

I actually think Brian Kelly has the team on the right track to become relevant again, and he has landed some pretty sweet recruits. Nothing like top ten will happen next year, but I do think there's a strong possibility of the Irish being a nationally ranked team throughout the season, again. So, I guess that recruiting rankings do matter outside the South.

The one and only.

I love when Notre Dame starts the year ranked and then slowly drifts toward obscurity as the losses mount. That makes me giggle.

And it's not like I have anything to root for this year. For some strange reason, we re-signed our head coach after a dismal 6-6 season. Call me crazy, but there was time not so long ago when Purdue went to a bowl game every year. I'm not exactly content with just settling for the Little Caesar's Bowl. Eleven years ago we played in the Rose Bowl with Sir Drew Christopher Brees. Perhaps we should aspire to reach those heights again. Sadly, we won't get there with Coach Hope at the helm. A 5-7 season this year seems entirely too optimistic.

Yes, well, I do think Notre Dame is going to finish next year ranked, actually. We'll talk then, mmmkay sunshine?

Don't you still owe me dinner over some bet we had?

I think Hope is a good football coach. He accomplishes about what you'd expect for the talent he has. Problem is, he is not a good recruiter. He hasn't brought in a Drew Brees, Curtis Painter, John Standeford or Taylor Stubblefield to carry the offense. You'd think his Florida ties would help. He'd be a fanstastic line coach on the NFL. Big Ten football coach......different story. Supposedly this is their best class in years, so it probably will be a make or break year for Hope.

Noles brought in another bad ass recruiting class

Some of the NCAA football rules were changed. Most notably:

 1) Kickoffs moved up to the 35 yard line.
 2) Touch-backs come out to the 25, not the 20.
 3) Players can no longer leap over blockers when trying to block punts.

What's your opinion on these?

Final recruiting rankings from Rivals.com (top 10):

#1 Alabama
#2 Texas
#3 Florida
#4 Ohio State
#5 Stanford
#6 Florida State
#7 Michigan
#8 USC
#9 Miami (FL)
#10 Auburn

Is it football season yet? :D

Interesting. The first two I understand - it's a trend all over sports to give teams more opportunities to score. So, pushing the start of play further out into the field seems to follow that trend. Give teams a better starting point, they're more likely to score. High scoring games are, in the analyst's opinions, more exciting for the fans, thus drawing a larger TV audience.

But the last one? 'thefuckisthat? Is there anything more exciting than a blocked punt, and the ensuing mayhem? That's just dumb.

Agree on all counts.

Oh boy... Petrino out at Arky, looks like their "title run" is over before it started...

Has Bama glued all those pieces back from the broken crystal ball yet? LOL. :D

I don't get #3. As far as I know you aren't allowed to jump on somebody to gain height while jumping so that isn't a problem, and effectively jumping completely over somebody to get a block on a punt in is borderline impossible unless the blocker is lying on the ground or something. Even if you could do it the jumper isn't going to be landing on his feat and making it to the punter until he gets back up, and by then the punt will be long done with. It seems like a solution that's in search of a problem.

As far as moving the kickoffs up, why even pretend to have what are effectively non-plays? At least it's mitigated by moving touchbacks out a little.

Playoffs coming in 2014. Not a perfect system, but certainly a step in the right direction.

It's about time!

And, they're doing it exactly how I predicted. Keep the bowls intact and have a championship game after the bowls are over. It's also interesting that they are already talking about expanding beyond a 4 team playoff. I just hope they don't go beyond 8 teams. Doing 8 teams is enough and it will keep the BCS wanna-be's like Boise State from whining about the unfairness of the BCS system.

Yup. They'll expand it beyond what's good, I predict.
