What do you think? Do you think this is accurate? Because, I don't.

First of all, it's taking the average salaries of a position, which can be very misleading. For example, it says that the average lawyer makes over $100,000 (which is true), but more lawyers than not only make anywhere between $30,000-40,000 per year. There are lawyers that make a ton of money, but those lawyers are in the minority.

Also, what about...

Rock stars?
Actors?
Actresses?
Authors?
Movie directors?
Movie producers?
Music producers?
Professional athletes?
Professional coaches?
Sports agents?
Etc.

All of those professions easily make more than any other position that is listed in that article, but why aren't they on the list?

I think they aren't on the list, mostly because they are in the minority.

Far greater are the/actors/athelets/musicians/etc... that aren't making much money at all. And, if you're taking a census, the highpayed guys are in the minority, say, compared to the lawyers. These are very uncommon jobs.


Still, I agree that you're right. Those guys probably SHOULD be on the list.

Exactly, there are many levels/sports professionals not making mega bucks but still making a living, same as lawyers and all the other jobs. you think all movie producers are in the top 5%? Use your brain.

I think you are right MiniD.

They are talking about jobs/careers that are part of the mainstream that are actually something real a lot of people could possibly do.Being a rock star or sports professional is really not a very realistic ambition for the majority of people and those kind of "jobs" while maybe highly visibly account for VERY VERY small amount of what most people do for a living.

I think those numbers they give are very realistic for the professions mentioned.

If you do an analyst of average salaries of those out of work/barely employed Actors/Actresses or those doing small theatre it makes the acting Profession a lot less lucrative.

I'm willing to bet that there are more famous and financially successful rock stars, actors, actresses and athletes than brain surgeons, anesthesiologists or petroleum engineers, so how is it realistic to become a brain surgeon, but not an actor (for example)?

But those people aren't actors/actresses by profession; they're waitresses.

They are Actors first but their a pay is so horrible they have to take up 'second part-time jobs'
as waitresses,valets,bartenders,etc..............but they are Actors.

'Rock star' isn't a profession dude & struggling musicians (most without record deals) especially Jazz musicians make no more or sometimes even less than your average Blue collar worker.

They are dealing in medians not the highest 1 percent.

If someone as intelligent as Friday can't get this simple point across I definetly can't do it.:wave2:

For professional athlete's and actors, I think there as "so many" making just the minimum that it brings the average down.

A-Rod is making like 30 million this year, but guys in the Yankee's minor league system, especially in single A may only be making $30,000 a year. So it averages out. I think the same applies for actors, aswell as many of the other jobs you have listed.

Personally, even though many actors, producers, athletes, musicians are very disciplined and do work hard in their art, I don't consider any of that to be a real job since I don't think it's essential for society to function, acting? that's a job? Pretending to be someone you're not a job? Playing football or baseball or whatever a job? It's playing! Musicians, playing music a job? Going on a stage and play the guitar and fucking groupies a job? That's really, as Dire Straits used to sing, "money for nothing".

At least that's my :2 cents: and more power to them anyway, they're talented, they deserve whatever they make, and so does someone who is talented at, let's say, teaching, fixing engines, doing accounting, driving an 18 wheeler safely, etc.

minimum for athletes, assuming the accuracy of these sites....nfl: $310,000, mlb: $400,000, nba: $442,114, nhl: $475,000 plus it scales up each year you play, as well as just each year for entry level players. however, you have to keep in mind how many players are in the minor leagues or in college who just never make. as for actor how many are just barely scraping by trying to make it and how many never will. as for singers how many bands pour their hearts into their music and never play more than, at best, local shows and how many have just their one hit which over a lifetime doesn't make one much.

I see what you mean, and partly I agree.
But there are many professions out there that are not essential for society either, but are still considered true professions: gemologists and gold smiths, photographers, game designers, cosmologists, priests, chefs, PR agents, tailors, gardeners - just to name a few that popped into my mind.

Strictly speaking, there are very few professions we need in society (for it to function):
- Infrastructure jobs like firemen, policemen and bus drivers
- Social jobs like health care and education
- Engineers
- Laborers (including for example farmers and fishermen)
...and lastly some sort of organ to organize all of this, most often politicians.

But that would result in a very bleak and depressing society. One with no culture, no media, no market - no real meaning or purpose. Sort of like the absolute worst of the Soviet Union.

Although it's absurd, in a way I am very glad that I live in a society where we can afford having people who make money from designing clothes or kicking a ball. It means that we've come a long way from just surviving

No, they're waitresses; waitresses who are trying to become actresses.

I'm trying to get a band together, but that doesn't make me a musician at the moment. I'm still a chef. That is, until I make my music my career and start earning money from it. But, until that happens...I'm still a chef.

FYI - Rock stars are musicians and being a musician is most certainly a profession.
