Abby Sunderland, 16-year-old Sailor Lost at Sea, but Family Remains Optimistic
June 10, 2010 07:51 PM EDT)

It’s a situation from a parents’ worst nightmare: Sweet-16-year-old Abby Sunderland, an ambitious girl set on being the youngest person to sail around the world, lost contact with her parents and may be in danger. According to the Los Angeles Times, Sunderland sailed into a storm today in the Southern Indian Ocean and lost contact with her family over satellite phone. She was about 2,000 miles southwest of Australia. Reports say that she activated two emergency beacon locating devices.

Now, two boats are headed towards Abby Sunderland’s boat but will not arrive for another 40 to 48 hours. The Australian Coast Guard also intends to fly over the area. Abby’s brother Zac told reporters that his sister had three emergency beacons: two on the boat and one on her life vest. Two of the beacons were manually set off. This is actually a cause for the family to be optimistic, because the third beacon is “a deep-water automatic beacon that is triggered by salt water and goes off when the boat has reached a depth of about 15 feet. That beacon has not gone off.”

I hope that the stinky somali pirates didn't intercept her!

I probably could have predicted this...

Very sad, but it makes me think....what responsible parent lets their teenage child travel around the world by themself in an outdated mode of transportation for about a year. It's selfish really, they wanna be the parents of a girl who'll be famous for about 5 minutes.

It's selfish of them, and they're also rewarding the girl's selfishness-these youngins that want to go sailing around the world don't see thats it not all about them, theres the rescue teams that have to risk their necks when she goes missing (somebody has to pay for that as well) and the family that have to bury you if the whole adventure goes tits up

Hello Sexy girl how your Toes doing?
Or the Israelis

My prayers are with this young girl, hopefully she is found safe, hopefully somali pirates consider her, or know she will not yield a huge return of profit in the way of being paid ransom & they let her be.

Israeli's really? Are you serious? if so don't be such a fucktard! just because your obsessed with hating Jews, you clearly KNOW NOTHING about them, they don't have evil hearts, thats just flatout MORONIC that you'd even say that!!

That 3rd beacon not being triggered gives, leaves, & is a promising sign she will be found alive.

Moving to a trailer in Fife, AL.
how much is it costing the Australian tax payers to send planes and boats 2,000 miles to look for a thrill seeker?

Playstation 2 doesn't look so bad now, huh?

She may have encountered a storm. As for Somali pirates the southern Indian Ocean is too far south for them I reckon.

i dont understand why her being 16 is such a big deal. theres been plenty of other completions of circumnavigations by people around her age.

im sure theyll find her soon enough, seeing as how her personal beacon and her ship board beacon are transmitting from the same location and her third one hasnt gone off yet, meaning she hasnt sunk

She's got bigger balls than me. Oceans creep me out. Especially the deep, creepy Atlantic.
To the tee ! :shivers:

Watching her on the video, she seems like she's got it all together, she's hardly a dingbat for all you dirty male chauvenistic pigs!

That's what prompted my thoughts about the possibility of pirates getting ahold of her, but as Trident correctly points out, (I hope he's right anyway :D) she's too far south.;)

Such lovely sentiments... I bet y'all make the "Parent of the Year" award each year it's announced!

cheers,

PS: I was going to post the update that they found her alive but Mr. Bloodshot Scott beat me to it :) Personally, I'm just glad that they found her alive.

I'm glad they found her alive. For the record, I buy into the "everybody gets one" philosophy when it comes to risky endeavors like these (or even worse, the mountain expeditions). If she decides to get right back up and hoist the sails I can certainly admire her bravery, but I think she should be on her own from here on out -- or her parents should fund and manage some private contingency plan of their own.
