My guess is that due to them following the comics first, they feel, in a way, that it was theirs before it was everyone else's. In a way, it was. It's more special to them because of it. Knowing that the tv show is many people's first exposure to the Walking Dead probably bothers them because...

That's the exact reason for why they write things differently for the show. Otherwise we would all know what would happen and interest would wane. I'd rather have to deal with constantly hearing the comic fans go on and on about the differences than have us already know what will happen.
