Had to bust it into two parts.

"Burning lumps of coal were used inside as a light source, where today we use candles. When European settlers arrived in America they found the pumpkin to be larger and easier to carve, and it has since become our choice for jack-o-lanterns."
    Google knows all lol.

"Halloween is that time of year when the young and the young-at-heart get to show off their artistic talent of pumpkin carving. For most of us Halloween is a magic night for dressing up in fun costumes, trick or treating and pumpkins. But did you know that Halloween is actually based on an ancient Celtic holiday know as Samhain (pronounced "sow wan"), which means "summer's end?" Starting at sundown on October 31st and ending at sundown on November 1st, it was celebrated as the end of the Celtic year. Traditionally it was a night to honor loved ones that had passed on. Celebrated by the Celts of old, witches, and other religions, it is truly the most magical night of the year and the last harvest. On this magical night, glowing jack-o-lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, were set on porches and in windows to welcome deceased loved ones, and also for protection against evil spirits."
