The Official Formula 1 Racing Thread

Also, poor Nico is complaining once again about how Hamilton messed up his race... by not going faster(???). Of course, Hamilton responded by saying that it wasn't his job to do anything to make Nico's race better. Hamilton was probably happy to see Nico in 2nd, as nothing more than a buffer between himself and Vettel. IMO, with Hamilton now 3-0 vs Rosberg in poles and 3-0 in results, Rosberg will soon find himself as the designated #2 driver if the battle with Ferrari heats up much more. My guess is, Mercedes will (if they haven't already) at some point say that whoever is ahead of the other, at a certain point in a race, will maintain their position, short of a pass in the pits. And if Hamilton is fighting for WDC points vs Vettel or Raikkonen more than Nico, at some point Nico may get a familiar call "Nico, Lewis is faster than you. Can you confirm you understood that message?" :( And with that, Nico will look even more crushed than he did yesterday.

I'm a Hamilton fan, though I've always liked Nico too. But their relationship (on track) reminds me very much of Senna and Berger. I liked both of them too (though Senna was THE man). But unlike Berger eventually did, Nico hasn't yet faced the reality of who and what he is (or is becoming) at Mercedes AMG: #2 driver. I'm thinking that if Hamilton gets a win from pole this weekend, Nico should just face that reality. I don't want it to break him (cause then they'll fire him). But Merc won't let him race Hamilton for wins if the Constructor's chase is tight. Just my 2 cents.
Pretty ridiculous really. Lewis is going too slow? Pass him then. Or an even better idea is to get pole position and dictate the race yourself.

I think Nico is poised for a royal whipping this season. We've never seen him overtake Lewis on track and his previous wins came when he was on pole ahead of Lewis or benefited from failures to his car. If he doesn't start ahead of Lewis then he doesn't have a prayer.

It wasn't until much later into the season that Nico started getting his pole positions last year so it remains to be seen if he can repeat the feat but somehow I doubt it. If this keeps up he's going to be crushed mentally. I think this weekend show's he's getting a bit desperate already.

It seems as if he is going through a list of ideas to try and unsettle Lewis. The first couple of races he was complimentary of Lewis saying that "he drove like a World Champion" and that he himself wasn't good enough. For China, he's gone for the "launch verbal ****** on Lewis" option. He will find that neither method will work - although he will find that the first of those two statements is resoundingly true come the end of the season.

Looks like the wide range of critical response and fun comments on his last remarks sparked something in Nico :)

Nico Rosberg outpaces Lewis Hamilton in Formula One practice

Nico Rosberg outpaced Mercedes team-mate and defending world champion Lewis Hamilton to clock the fastest time in Friday's floodlit second free practice session for Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix.

The 29-year-old German clocked a best lap in 1min 34.647sec to finish up one-tenth of a second clear of the Briton at the Sakhir Circuit on which he seeks pole position for the third consecutive year.

Hamilton, who won last year's race with some thrilling moves in a dramatic contest, ended up under investigation by the race stewards for 'failing to leave the pit lane correctly', a misdemeanour that is unlikely to upset his confident form this year.

"I just followed Kimi (Raikkonen) when he went round a car that was stopped there," Hamilton explained afterwards. "I don't really know what happened, but I thought it was ok to do that."

Nico under his breath: Lewis, I **** you. I've always hated you. But I **** you even more right now!!!

Hell of a race!!! Action all through the field... right up to the last corner of the last lap (KA-BOOM!!!) Anybody that thinks that was boring just doesn't like racing. And what a resurgence by Ferrari!

Better terrain handlig due to foresight for the suspension system, old news for F1 cars, brand spanking new for tanks.

Formula One Technology is Heading to... Tanks?

When you think about it, Formula One is the only sport that really relies on adapting new and innovative technology to survive, and it makes sense that some of its advances would end up being used elsewhere. Normally you'd think about regular road cars, but it turns out that BAE Systems is adapting Forumla 1 tech for military tanks.

It sounds bizarre, and since this has never happened before it sort of is, but the tanks will be upgraded with tech that will improve handling and speed in the battlefield. In that context it does make quite a bit of sense.

'Active Dampening' systems have been used in Formula One since 1991, and BAE has adapted the systems to current variants of the CV90 ****** of combat vehicles. It works by sensing the vehicle's speed and the layout of the terrain ahead, before adjusting the pressure in the suspension to ensure that the vehicle stays level at all times.

According to BAE Systems this has allowed CV90 vehicles to break rough terrain speed records, travel 30-40 per cent faster, as well as reducing general wear and tear. In the long run that means a smoother ride for the crew and reduction of repair costs across the tank's life-span.

Volkswagen chief quits, opens door for Formula 1 project

The chairman of Volkswagen, Ferdinand Piech, has quit – effectively opening the door for one of the car manufacturer’s many brands to enter Formula 1.

Piech – the 78-year-old chief of the Volkswagen Group – resigned from his role on Saturday. He has long been viewed as the reason VW had not entered F1 in recent times, due to his personal feud with F1's commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone.

As previous reported by Motorsport.com, Piech had been effectively shunned by the VW Executive Committee of the Supervisory Board recently.

However, his move to resign is understood to have taken the Group by surprise.

VW’s Supervisory Board recommended that CEO Martin Winterkorn be offered a new extensive and long-term contract from 2016 onward, after Piech had been attempting to orchestrate Winterkorn’s removal.

The rumours were around for a long time, but Piech, which ****** still holds half of the stocks and who get to veto any decision of the company, was strongly against it. Nowthe road may be clear.

^^^IMO, it would be very exciting to have a brand like Audi enter F1. As has been said elsewhere and here, VAG is involved in so many motorsports programs right now. But since Audi and Porsche are both involved in Le Mans/sports car programs, why not move one of them to F1, while still advancing hybrid/turbo technology? If not Audi, then how about Lamborghini taking on Ferrari for Italian F1 honors? And [NOBABE]just a *****[/NOBABE], but what if Renault bought and rebranded Toro Rosso, while Audi bought out Red Bull, or at least became their new engine partner? Or maybe Audi could put Sauber out of its misery by buying Peter out and rebranding his team (and firing Monisha Kaltenborn on Day 1!). With the new Haas-Ferrari entry due to debut next season, there are some exciting possible developments in play for F1 over the next year or two. Hopefully Bernie doesn't ruin it all by allowing Monza to fall by the wayside. If he does that, just go ahead and nix Monaco, Silverstone and Spa too. Fill the series with customer cars and tell Ferrari they have to let [NOBABE]Danica Patrick[/NOBABE] drive half the races. If he's going to ruin it, don't screw around. Ruin it totally and completely!

I feel the same about Audi and F!, but news is out that they have no plans for this. Here is an article:

But one line gives us hope about the possibility of them taking just a different approach:

... But if they do, it won't be under the Audi branding. ..

Now the nuclear treaty is settled

Iran announces Formula 1 plans

The Iranian government has announced plans to build a Formula 1 circuit on Qeshm Island, off the southern coast of Iran.

The island, which is in the Strait of Hormuz and is only a few kilometers from Dubai, is the second venue that Iran has mooted as a possible destination for F1, with plans to construct a circuit on the outskirts of Tehrain discussed in 2011.

In breaking news, Lewis Hamilton has applied for a firearms permit and was last seen walking toward the Mercedes team motorhome. News at 11.

:wtf: was that???!!! That was the most boneheaded thing I have EVER seen a team do while leading.

Wrong series... You're about 8 years late for Juan being in F1.

Anybody want to take a guess how many empty seats there will be in the Mercedes AMG offices at Brackley tomorrow afternoon?

It was bizarre - why take the risk if a change of Pirellis wasn't necessary? In Monaco, even if you're struggling with them, it's very difficult for the guy behind to get past. And we saw what good having a new set did for Hamilton when he was unable to overtake.

If it wasn't for Verstappen's crash, none of this would have happened and we wouldn't have had a lot to talk about - so in a way, it's a good job it did! But what a massive balls up.

I think this shows that Mercedes maybe aren't so hot on the strategy side of things and have been so used to being so far ahead that they haven't been in the habit of having to use their heads and think on their feet. They pressed the panic button when the safety car came out.

He was congratulating him on his 2003 Monaco GP win. ;)

The official reason was they misjudged how far ahead he was and thought he had more of a gap, it was actually understandable to a certain extent because the change from virtual safety car to full safety car meant that the following cars could go considerable faster on the mainstraight (curve!) than they would otherwise. Its still a bad decision because there's always the chance that the pitstop goes awry but someone decided it was a risk worth taking and got it terribly wrong.

I agree that Mercedes aren't good with strategy, last year was too damn easy for them and while their mistakes won't cost them the title this year, it will cost their drivers individually since Ferrari (mostly Vettel) are close enough to take advantage. I wouldn't be surprised if later on this year Ferrari and Merc pit their drivers at the same time and Ferrari can jump them since they're consistently faster in pitstops.

The podium was really awkward, Rosberg was happy he'd got points back but was a little sheepish because he was definitely second best, Vettel has happy to split the Mercs and see a rival team screw up and Hamilton was doing his best to act sportingly to the others while also wanting to show how pissed off he was.

Lewis deliberately driving into the #3 board outside the royal box summed up his feelings. He also stopped just outside the tunnel on his in lap after the race. What was that all about? Collecting his thoughts? Thought he was gonna do a Senna-like move and get out and head to his nearby apartment like he did when he retired at almost that very spot. Oh, and Lewis stood the wrong side of Rosberg on the podium to begin with after he collected his trophy. All very awkward indeed.

Formula One replaces 'grid girls' with 'grid boys' at the Monaco Grand Prix

Following years of criticism, Formula One has finally embraced a bit of equal opportunity objectification: at Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix, the 'grid girls' were replaced by 'grid boys'.

The usual motorsport sight of women in skin-tight outfits, holding umbrellas over drivers on the pre-race grid was nowhere to be seen. Instead, dudes in white polos and jeans held placards as drivers prepared for the start of the race.

Yes, I know introducing grid boys as opposed to grid girls was certainly on top of my list to make F1 better...

Speaking of which, has anyone completed that GPDA survey? I did, and not only does it take a couple of weeks to complete - I was left feeling it won't actually tell them anything. They'll look at the results and think "hmm, that's interesting" and it won't actually influence any future decision. In other words, a waste of time. It was a good idea in principal but I don't think they've gone about it the right way.

I did the survey, too. I just hope it helps a bit. I found it interesting that there were very specific question about "Would you stop viewing if XYZ left". - and the one about basically, is Ecclestone what we need.

I'm just trying to think back and remember some of the questions...

I liked the fact you were able to state which races you thought were important to be on the F1 calendar.

There was also a couple of questions about double points. "Would you like to see it for the last race?" No. "OK then. What about for the last 3 races?" Er. Let me think about that... no.

There was also a question about a sprinkler system being introduced. Yes, rain affected races are always that bit more exciting but come on - that's just too artificial.

Hey everyone! Words cannot express how excited I am to see that this thread exists on here. My first day on the message boards and I already feel at home :)

My 2 cents:

As far as Hamilton and pit stops, can we talk about Catalunya for a second? Hamilton gave up the lead to pit and he had one more pit stop than everybody else... he didn't seem to mind placing under Rosberg then. In my opinion, the pit stop at Monaco was perfectly understandable. Even though it's hard to pass someone with worn tires, Hamilton did have a brake bias issue (imagine re-starting after the safety car, under those conditions: Cold/worn tires, bad brake bias, fast guys behind you)... all that combined would have him slipping all over the course, looking like Raikkonen did at Catalunya. Bye bye 19 second lead. Which, speaking of Catalunya..Bottas did play a very good game and kept it cool, but Ferrari is blaming Raikkonen for a car that is obviously poorly set up. It's pretty impressive that Raikkonen can stay right on Bottas' tail even with his car slipping everywhere, in every turn....but I digress. :)

Every time Rosberg gets a win, all the Hamsters (Hamilton Fans) act like he's nothing more than a back-marker with some good luck. Fact is: The dude is fast. People can preach all they want about how the race was stolen from Hamilton, but let's be real. It's Monaco. Even if he didn't pit, he would have been choosing the lesser of two evils. Either driving on worn tires with a bad brake bias (For example, 2014 Brazil spinout) or risk losing the lead to be on fresh tires. Rosberg's lap times are consistently on par with Hamilton, and ROSBERG was the one to set THE fastest lap time during that race. Nobody is looking at Rosberg, and they never have because his teammate is either World Champion Lewis Hamilton or Multiple time World Champion Schumacher. Every time he wins, he deserves the win. How people can consistently look over the fact that he is one of the fastest drivers in Formula One is beyond me.

I'm not bashing Hamilton by any means, and sometimes he is incredibly impressive to watch. I'm actually a pretty hardcore Hamilton fan, but people should recognize talent for talent. Rosberg isn't lucky... he's fast.

Speaking of people to watch. Max Verstappen. Holy Senna re-incarnate, batman. He's going to be fun to watch. :)

Welcome, Ivy!!!

Here is fun but endearing news from the after-sport domain:
