Problem is that, to my knowledge, there is ONE senator atm that does not claim to be christian. The 'Holy Lobby' is way too strong. They are worse than the NRA, in my opinion.
It shines through a lot in a lot of posts here in this thread.
It's all about irrationality. If you are a believer, you ultimately put the control over your thoughts and action outside of you, whereas if you are an atheists, you take responsibility yourself for what you do.
Bull. Evangelical Christians are actually underrepresented in Congress, Jews are vastly overrepresented (there are 12 Jewish Senators alone) Hindus are underrepresented, the most underrepresented group in congress are those with no religious affiliation at 16% of the population. 6 Members of Congress registered no affiliation and there's at least 1 atheist. Pete Stark of the bay area in SF.
So you have Jews and Mormons who are overrepresented (Jews are vastly overrepresented) groups. Mormons identify strongly with the Republican party and Jews with the Democratic party.
Let's not forget that with societies dominated by Atheism, responsibility, and the judgement of what is right or wrong often lies in the STATE and the technocrats that run it. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Oddly enough, that trend seems to have informed a lot of the leftist support for Islam until just after 9/11. There are parallels between Islamic societies and socialism. Some of this may be "xenophilia" on the part of Western leftists, but they see Islam as solving one of the structural problems of communsim and socialism. When so much power is invested in the state and the people who run it, where no constitution can protect the rights of the people, there's nothing to put a check on corruption and tyrannical behavior by it's leaders.
Obviously a cynic, or closet unbeliever in a theological state would have no qualms about corruption and ***** of power, but someone who truly believes in his God and eternal judgement would think twice. **
**This is actually a very condensed premise for political Islam, where they believe every other form of government is doomed to fail because it rests on human frailty and not God's law. The Muslim Brotherhood has been postulating on how to bring about a Muslim state for nearly a century.
