Scientists Erase Specific Memories in Mice

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 22 (HealthDay News) -- It sounds like science fiction, by scientists say it might one day be possible to erase undesirable memories from the brain, selectively and safely.

Using a complex genetic approach, U.S. and Chinese researchers believe they have done just that in mice, but the feat is far from being tested on humans.

It might be far from being tested on humans, but that's definitely on the horizon. Once they get it, governments would be free to do all the anal probes and interrogations they want without worrying about people talking.

Wasn't there a science fiction movie made about this???

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, AKA - the worst movie ever.

How do you know if you erase the memory of a MOUSE? This is all speculation and I'm taking it as nothing more than some serious :bs:

Anyone ever stop to think how far science has gone by this point? Where do they go next? At what point do they go to far?

This is playing with fire. Sure everyone has certain memories that they'd like to forget, but this is pushing it too far. If the wrong hands got on this, heaven help us.

But on the flip side, it could be used to help people or change some people for the better, i.e. you accidentally ran someone over with your car and can't get rid of the guilt. Erasing that memory may help that person, but some people who have memories like that may not want to forget.

Kinda the way I feel about cloning. Its a double edged sword and a very, VERY sharp one at that!

I agree that cloning is a VERY sharp edge, but I'm against it. I think cloning is playing God and that should never be attempted by man. Whatever god is out there, I don't think he or she would like it.

In a way, erasing certain memories is playing God, but to a much lower level, and a safer one. With cloning, you could take Hitler's skull and make a clone of him and that's just what the world doesn't need again. But with erasing certain memories, you can get rid of memories that may have triggered a person into killing 50 people.

So like you said Legz, it's a very fine edge, but I think the safer of the two, and I use "safer" loosely.

I see your point. I hate the idea of cloning. Can turn against humanity way to easily if that kind of technology falls into the wrong hands. But it does have positive uses.

I dunno. I guess the same can be said about all advances in technology over the past few decades. It's growing by leaps and bounds. Science is discovering things and figuring out shit that only a few years ago was science fiction. Its both exciting and terrifying.

I like where home theater technology is heading. Advances in medicine are insane! Automobiles, everything really. It boggles the mind. Most of the stuff we now take for granted...like our computers for example weren't even thought of 50 years ago and now most of us can't live without em. It excites me to wonder where we'll be technologically in another 50 years...but its also a little scary...

Most of the beef that you eat is from cloned cattle. Yup...yup.

what? no...really? shit, I love steak...but yea. OH did I mention about nuclear technology in my last post? The power of the sun yielded by man. Some use it for energy...others use it for...well you know...

Mmm hmm. Also, 99% of the milk you drink is due to hormone injections that are given to cows, in order to make them produce milk at an unnaturally quick rate. There's nothing unsafe about it, it's just...weird, if you think about.

But yeah, in the next couple of years, expect close to 85-95% of the beef you buy in the market to come from cloned cattle. Organic beef will still be available, but once the US really starts pushing it's cloned beef (which they haven't even done yet), most of the super markets will be stocking their shelves with it. It's super fucking cheap and it's totally safe to eat. It will save us (the customers) a shit load of money, but...it's still kind of weird.

Interesting. But I should believe you why?

I don't think anything like this will be around for a long time. It would be almost impossible to tell what to do or exactly where to go to eliminate just a certain memory. We don't even know exactly how memories are even stored.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. There are a few thousand cloned beef cattle and a few hundred cloned dairy cattle in the U.S., out of a total of around 34 million beef cattle and 9 million dairy cattle. As long as it continues to cost close to $20,000 to clone a single animal, the practice won't catch-on widescale (which is not to say that the price won't come way down in the next few years).

How is it super fucking cheap? The cloned embryo still has to be placed in the uterus of the cow and development still takes the same amount of time as an artificially inseminated cow. That's not even taking into consideration the cost of the actual cloning process.
