Very few people ever actually die during it. In over 100 years there's only been slightly more than a dozen deaths, and I don't think there's ever been more than two a year. So it's probably a lot safer than some events or past times. You're way more likely to step in bull shit and ruin your shoes doing this than you are to be trampled or gored.

... that said, it's kind of stupid, so why would I want to do it?
