Working until your 80's.

Many of us won’t be able to retire until our 80s
You’ll probably have to work much longer than you anticipated

We all think it’s a panacea. If you don’t have enough money saved for retirement, you’ve got a few ways to close the gap between what you have and what you need in your nest egg: Save more, invest more aggressively, and/or work longer.

Well, it turns out that working longer is indeed an option, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute latest study. The only problem is that the latest research shows that you’ll have to work much longer than you anticipated. In fact, many Americans will have to keep on working well into their 70s and 80s to afford retirement, according to the study, titled “The Impact of Deferring Retirement Age on Retirement Income Adequacy.”

What’s more, it’s even worse for low-income workers, according Jack VanDerhei, one of the co-authors of the study. Those who earned (on average over the course of their careers) less than $11,700 per year, the lowest income quartile, would need to defer retirement till age 84 before 90% of those households would have just a 50% chance of affording retirement.

I remember I was in the 7th grade when our teacher told us we all had to save a certain percentage of the money we weren't making if we wanted to retire by the age of 80. This is why you buy a gun.

Dad's 83 and still working and very productive to society.

I have no plans to ever retire - work-a-holism must be hereditary.

You don't have to be productive. Especially the way this country acts towards its own citizens.

There's more to life than work.

I enjoy working on the whole, I don't have a problem with that. Of course some days suck, but not every day.

I agree - "There's more to life than work." Lucky for me, I love my work and since much of my enjoyment and income comes from being productive, productivity also allows me to do things than many people only dream of.

Since I'm not the type to sit around and wait for someone else to take care of me, I'm not so butt-hurt about "the way this country acts towards its own citizens" - whatever that's supposed to mean.

I'll work until i'm 60 then move to a third world country where i can waste what little money i have on hookers and blow. Whats the point of living if you cant actually LIVE? What is the point of peolonging your life if you reqlly arent living anyway?

Now that's how you retire. Hope I can do the same but replace the cocaine with Weed. Don't know if I want to learn a foreign language though.

I don't plan on working past 59 and 1/2 (401k maturity) unless it's some very small ENJOYABLE business for myself.

Rubbish. Anyone in this nation can retire anytime they want to....depending upon what their lifestyle expectations are that is. If one doesn't mind sleeping under an overpass and panhandling for spare change during the day to eke out a very meager living, any of us can retire immediately.

If this plays out why not just go and rob a bank when you're 70? If you get away with it, great, you're set. If you get caught, so what, at least you have a place to stay and a guaranteed meal.

Perhaps you guys should pick up smoking, unless you guys really want to retire.

It depends on what you mean. When I'm 80, I hope I'm still teaching a course a year, or maybe a semester. That's because I love doing it. Doesn't feel much like work.

But working full weeks? Hell, I don't do that now, and I'm more than 40 years from 80.

Wow I hope not to be working at that age. I would rather spend my time looking at all the hot 20 year olds and thinking back to when I could fuck the hell out of all of them and not fall asleep. Yes I still plan on fucking 20 year olds at 80. I plan on looking amazing as a old person. :)
