Woman sues historic New York bar after claim of 'vicious attack' by house cat

Sounds like BS to me. If she had been 'mauled' I'm sure other customers would have noticed or she would've called an ambulance on the spot.

Cat suit: Woman sues historic New York bar after claim of 'vicious attack' by house cat

A female drinker has sued the owners of a bar after claiming she was viciously attacked - by the house cat.

Cheryl Sibley says that she was mauled and left with ‘serious injuries’ after being set upon by Minnie the Second at McSorley's Old Ale House in New York.

The 53-year-old woman claims that the tabby cat went berserk and her wounds were so severe she had to go to hospital for treatment.

She has launched a lawsuit against Matthew Maher, the owner of 156-year-old bar, demanding compensation for the attack.

He denies that Minnie is in any way violent, adding that the bar animal is a peaceful animal who would not do such a thing.

McSorley’s has a long history of house cats and for more than a century they have roamed freely along the bar, giving regulars company as they sip their pints.

The East Village pub is also known for a string of famous historical patrons - including Babe Ruth, Woody Guthrie and Harry Houdini.

Banished: Minnie was not allowed into the bar after McSorley's was fined $1,000 for letting the animal walk along the bar what customers were drinking

According to bar legend, when a cat is asleep in the window, Houdini’s spirit is there.

So tight is the bond between pet and pub that the presence of the animals was made the subject of the 1928 John Sloan painting, titled McSorley's Cats.

Mr Maher said: ‘There have always been cats at McSorley's, and there always will.’

In October last year, Ms Sibley, from Hasbrouck Heights in New Jersey, claims that Minnie the Second attacked her.

In her lawsuit filed at Manhattan’s Supreme Court she does not specify what her injuries were, only that the ‘live animal’ mauled her.

Irishman Mr Maher, who has worked at McSorley's since 1964 and has owned it since 1977, said he had ‘no recollection of any attack’.

He added: ‘If I would have known, I would have been the first to call her and say "Are you OK? Can I do anything for you?'’,' he said.

The legal row is the latest pet-related problem to hit McSorley’s. Last summer Minnie the First died, then just a few months later another cat -called Stinky - also passed away before Minnie the Second arrived.

In August the bar was hit with a $1,000 fine for allowing Minnie to walk along the bar, which is why Mr Maher is intrigued as to how Minnie could have attacked Ms Sibley.

He sswears that the cat is banished to another part of the building during opening hours.

Ms Sibley and her lawyer declined to comment.
