See, this is the dichotomy. Either you respect its rights as a sentient being, or you don't. There's no just thing as 'just a' in a societal paradigm that practices ethics and morality at the core of its self-identity. The measure of a society is how we treat those members and beings that are weaker than us.

I love cats and would never hurt one, let alone kill one, but let's get one thing straight here: It's A Fucking Cat! It's not paying taxes, it's not finding a cure for AIDS, it's not helping the economy. Get over it.
So anybody can just kill whatever, whoever they want because they aren't contributing to society? Can I go downtown and kill some homeless people? They're contributing less than a cat would.

Name one thing that a cat contributes to society other than company and happiness? Have you ever heard of a cat calling it's congressman and asking why things are like they are? I think not.
Also, judging my your tone it seems to me that if anyone kills any animal for any reason that person should be punished. That cat died because it was an accident. I highly doubt, and I did not read anywhere, that she intentionally wanted to kill the thing. Judging by your tone anyone who can't get out a deer's way fast enough when it's running across the road and gets hit should be punished. Anyone who has an animal and that animal dies by sheer accident should be punished. No I'm not in favor of animal abuse, but animals die just like every living thing. When the day comes that a cat or any animal figures out how to solve the world's problems, and then that animal dies not from natural causes, then yes that person or people should be held accountable, but until then, a cat's role in this world is to catch mice, meow, purr and play with string.
Intentionally shootng heroin, and intentionally blowing it in a cats face isn't an accident.

I love my cats too - and find it reprehensible that the girl did what she did - but much more reprehensible to me is the fact that the way she treated the fucking cat is more important to some of people than the way she treated a human being.

I don't value an animal above a human, but she killed someone elses cat. It's not even the fact she killed it, it's how she did it. People hit cats and dogs all the time. Unfortunate but no punishment is required. She blew heroin smoke in the cats face. How can you shrug that off? Oh it was an accident? That's animal abuse, son.

I agree on the first point but I disagree on the second. Animals contribute hugely to society - the companionship alone make s the world a much better place. I could list hundreds of examples but I'm not her to change peoples minds - just to explore the many ideas we all have. Besides, I can probably no more change your mind than you could mine.

I don't get my cats stoned (although I've thought about it a few times
) and only one of them even gives a shit about catnip. :dunno:To say animals don't contribute to society is like saying water doesn't contribute to society. I abuse water every morning when I wash my balls with it - in fact, I'm pretty sure I could shit in it and flush it away and not upset a single person. But water is extremely critical to society, thus, his argument just doesn't find a basis in my mind.
I was raised on a small farm. We kept no animals that didn't benefit us, we either ate them, their embryos or drank their milk, used their wool for clothing, used them to kill other less-desirable animals like mice and rats, used them to protect the sheep etc. Every single animal on our farm was useful to our family and thus to society.
But even if an animal didn't serve a purpose on our farm, we didn't abuse it. Yes I've killed thousands of mice, rats snakes and even cute little bunnies but never without a purpose and never in a way that wasn't quick and as painless as possible. (Except the skunk that sprayed me when I was ten - I stoned that fucker to death then hung it in my 15-year old sister's window - but in my 10-year old mind - they both deserved it).
But I ramble...........................
