Why I despise (hate) Unions

Nonunion Workers Turned Away From Sandy Recovery Efforts

unionhelp.jpg

At least unions and the corrupt politicians they keep in their pockets are reliable. You can rely on them never to place the public interest ahead of their hold on power:

Utility … crews from Alabama got the shock of their lives when other workers in a coastal New Jersey town told them they couldn't lend a hand without a union card.

Derrick Moore, who works for Decatur Utilities in Decatur, Ala., told WAFF-TV in Huntsville that crews in Seaside Heights, N.J. turned him and his crewmates away, saying they couldn’t do any work there because they’re not union employees. …

Another nonunion Decatur Utilities crew is idling in Roanoke, Va., waiting for instructions from Seaside Heights. The town asked them days ago for help, but later told the workers to stand down.

A rejected crew from the Joe Wheeler Electric Membership Co-op in Trinity, Ala. has already turned around and headed back to Dixie.

Electric repair work for public utilities in New Jersey is dominated by the International Brotherhood Of Electrical Workers, a unit of the politically powerful AFL-CIO.

It could be two weeks before everyone in New Jersey has their power back on.

So much for the promises from Big Union’s best friend Obama that there would be no red tape.

Update: Jersey Central Power & Light spokesman denies that anyone has been turned away.

They guy in the pic should receive no help of any kind before there's not anyone in need of help except him.

It's not the Union workers fault. This is politics.

Unions would be better if they were politically neutral.
Unions should be in place to help workers, and that is all.

Without some help for worker's rights we would be at the mercy of unscrupulous employers.

Everywhere in the world, unions are siding with the Left.

Good post, Will.

Although I am not a particularly pro union guy, all one needs to do is watch the amazing History Channel series, The Men Who Built America, to understand their origin. There are positives and negatives with unions. What is in the OP is obviously a negative.

No shit. Are you feeling OK Will? I'm scared for you. :D

Is a source too much to ask?

From Sam? Yes, a source is way too fuckin' much to ask. And don't ask him about his military record either.

So in other words, this is just more bullshit from our resident bullshit purveyor. Thought so.

Unions historically suffer from what many organization suffer from, greedy, power hungry leaders.

They do give workers power. Say that they hurt America's competativeness and I'm not going to argue. However, workers (blue and white collared) do fight for fairness constantly. Saying that the fairness is willingly doled out by corporate management is niave. When they do so, they do so because they have to. Either legally or because they need to in order maintain a good workforce. Look at what has happenened since 2008. Many corporations have bounced back. They took prudent measures in reducing their workforce, but they haven't built it back up. Instead, they expect the workers to continue to take on more.

I'm not saying any of this is unnatural, evil, or wrong. What I will say is that the unions, as inefficecient and flawed as they are, are a ying to the corporate yang. I would not want to live in a country where there wasn't something that was challanging the corporate power and creating some sort of ballance.

(Also, do you really want to go around hating things? Most thinking is caused by some action or enviornment. I've seen you capable of pretty good thought in some of your posts. Isn't it better to try and understand instead of hating? You can still fight against something you don't agree with, but there is some reason behind what you hate.)

The only problem with that statement is the statement.
Unions do not exist to help or lookout for workers, their sole purpose is to line the pockets of Union bosses and lawyers pockets with the workers money while using the workers as bargaining chips.
One of the most popular union myths is the one that unions gave us a weekend, no they didn't; blue-laws gave us weekends and unions had absolutely nothing to do with creating them.
The entire concept of a union is literally right out of the Marxism manifesto.
The idea of paying some shyster a weekly fee just so that I can work doing what I have been trained to do for a company is beyond just offensive to me.

They are called Labor laws and Unions had nothing to do with creating them in-fact in their early infancy they actually muscled elected officials to vote against them.
