More and more parents are reaching for "Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret" when choosing a bedtime story for their daughters, thanks to a rise in the number of girls entering puberty early.

According to CBS's The Early Show, a study published last year in the journal Pediatrics reveals that 15 percent of all Caucasian girls are developing breasts and other outward signs of maturity by age seven. The rate among African-American children is even higher: 23 percent of girls are entering puberty early. The study looked at 1,239 girls and the results are double that of a 1997 study.

Dr. Jennifer Ashton is a medical correspondent for CBS and she tells The Early Show that the effects of precocious puberty are not "cute."

Growth hormones in our foods...and probably some of the chemicals and preservatives. that's my best guess. Maybe a little evolution too.

Put me down as one for food, as well. Except for animals which we have domesticated, I am sure no other animal continues to drink milk past its young years. And seeing that we have injected the milk with so many hormones, no wonder kids are aging faster.

Exactly. In our time girls were mostly slim. None at my middle school or highschool were fat or chubby. Today the majority are fatty.

So right, so very right. Late 80's, into the 90's and it continues even today. I explained to my kid what was in soda and sport drinks and he understands. Like Monopotassium Phosphate. He already knew cigarettes were bad, so once I pointed out that Gatorade uses that and it is also used in cigarettes it clicked on in his brain. That and I showed him the picture of chicken mcnuggets being made.

The Effects of Growth Hormones in Food

Growth hormones are given to animals, such as cattle, in order to make them gain weight faster, thus producing meat products for consumers at a faster rate. Growth hormones also increase milk production in animals. While dairy and meat industries depend on the use of growth hormones for increased productivity and profit, these hormones may hold negative health repercussions for humans.
