I still have XP. Its the best OS you can have.
The most stable and compatible OS.
Vista just looks better with the Aero thingy.

XP...

Vista, so I've heard has more bugs than XP ever had and it's a monster program that takes a lot of memory to run.

I've thought of switching to Linux when I buy a new computer which won't be for awhile.

Unless Microsoft can think of something better than Vista...

No option for Mac OS X or Linux? Of the 2, XP is the better OS in all respects, vista runs like total shit on my AMD X2 3800+@3Ghz w/ 2Gb of DDR2 800 @ 4-4-4-12 and nvidia 8600GTS OC.

But seriously, for everything non gaming A Mac or Ubuntu Studio based comp is far better, I use Ubuntu Studio based on the currentlt release of ubuntu 7.10 on the pc and I run OS X 10.4 on my dual 1Ghz G4.

Gaming isn't too bad on linux right now, I've got Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Never winter Nights, Regnum Online, Quake 4, Doom 3, X2 all running natively and will soon have Unreal Tournament 3 going as well. Other games Like World Of Warcraft and Guild Wars run fine in linux as well tho you'll need to use Wine, Cedega or Crossover to play them.

Best thing, Mac OS and Linux don't get internet herpese from going to the internet whore houses lol.

XP.

And if you intend to play games on a computer, get Alienware.

I owned a Vista installed computer for two days (before I took it back). And I did not like it. I did not like the way it looked and I did not like the way it worked.

It is a much 'happier' program. With happy little noises and happy little gimmicks. And I imagine there are people that think it is great. In the stores, it looks great. But practically speaking, it seems evolutionary rather then revolutionary compared to xp, to me.
And it does take up SO much memory to run.

I am no huge fan of xp. But I definitely prefer it to pretentious (IMO) Vista.

Meh, build it, you can get the same parts for half the price from shops like Newegg, TigerDirect, Geeks or any of the other decent computer parts shops online.

Same goes for other high end builders like http://www.falcon-nw.com/ and http://www.voodoopc.com/ while their machines are nice, the prices are way more then the machine is worth, why pay $5000 for $2000 worth of parts and a weekend putting it together?

I meant for those who can't build a computer.

Hi Mcrocket, to answer your question, personally it took me a while to get used to Vista and I also felt there was no need for it but the OS has gotten better with each update and as newer drivers come out all the time and now I'm really happy with it to the point i wouldn't go back.
The best OS though considered by the majority of the Computing Industry is the Apple Mac operating systems. But thats not what you asked.

XP. No question about it, it's the best operating system for gaming.

I have both of them and I'm not really impressed with Vista at all. It still won't let me play games in higher res's than xp would even though its supposed to have DX10 and its supposed to be so good. I've been thinking about reformatting and installing Xp for a while now.

i think microsoft problems is that don't refine the current OS before try to work on the next i mean come on people they are only after our money maybe they should spend sometime working on something of quailty and follow it up with support and not just run to make the next big money maker Vista is proof of that for me its XP all the way.

I got my computer built to an Alienware spec by PC Specialist in UK for half the price (only £900 for dual core 2.7GHz, 2gb ram, 500gb mem and 512mb Nvidia graphics card), and it runs great - with the exception of Vista.

I can't run older games, like Baldur's Gate 2 (and Throne of Bhaal expansion). Yes I've tried patches and Compatability settings, but my fav game still won't run properly :(

The biggest problem is not the OS it's the newer Office packages (yes I use the "grown up" stuff) I can't get used to the Word & Excel 2007. These run on similar airy-fairy Vista menus and they suck. I have no-idea where anything is and some things that were once in the same menu bar are now in a different one, and that means productivity is reduced. Damn Bill Gates and his evil empire  :crash:
