Finally got around to watching this...yet another feelgood Disney offering with a sports theme, based loosely on fact. It chronicles the events of Texas Western (now UTEP) and their improbable rise to the 1966 NCAA Championship game against Adolph Rupp (Jon Voight) and his Kentucky Wildcats. Based on Western coach Don Haskins' (Josh Lucas) book, the film follows the team from Haskins' hiring to his controversial...at the time... recruitment of Black players. It comes from our friends who created Remember The Titans, so it stands to reason that the formula is similar. Where it succeeds is in its depiction of southern racism--some of which actually happened--and the understandable strain it puts on the team. Albeit, not enough emphasis was put on the strain to family Coach Haskins recounts in his book. Many of the unsettling racial scenes were exaggerated or contrived for theatrical reasons...although to make it clear, these things DID happen throughout the south even during this late an era. What we get when you put it all together, though, is a pretty decent sports movie in its own. Lack of character development hurts the flow a bit, but the feel and rush of the movie is indeed present, although weakened a bit by elastic facts. B-

This was a cheerful two hours!
Not a single good thing happened during that film. If you like a real downer without even the remote promise of a happy ending, but enjoy a tense and superbly-acted and directed film, TSHDT is a can't miss. Did you know Charlie Chaplin was one of the original originators of that film?
