Since so many folks seem to be interested in mysteries & techno-thrillers, here are a few suggestions.

Caleb Carr's "The Alienist" is one of the best mystery/thrillers I've ever read. Set in New York in the late 1800s, it's about psychological profiling and the search for a serial child-murderer.

I think of Frederick Forsyth as "Tom Clancy before there was Tom Clancy" - he is very proficient with using and incorporating technical details into his story lines, without overburdening the reader with jargon & "tech talk" - the two I recommend the most are "Day of the Jackal" and "The Dogs of War". Both were also made into fine films (although avoid the Bruce Willis remake of "Jackal" like the plague).

Lawrence Sanders "The Anderson Tapes" is a great book about surveillance and robbery (it was also made into a fine film, with Sean Connery).

Currently reading Philip Roth's The Facts. I love that guy.

other favs are Thomas Pynchon, Franz Kafka and Thomas Bernhard

Right now I'm reading Life of Pi. The day I finish it, I'll watch the movie on Blu-ray.

After that I'll be reading Orion and King Arthur, the long-awaited (16 years!) sixth book in Ben Bova's fantastic Orion science fiction series.

Im a big dan brown fan. the movies suck ass but the books are amazing. sadly he doesnt publish very much.

He writes novels from time to time indeed and I do agree with you that the movies made and based on his novels are not that great but that the books are indeed great.

Last I read was The Law of Nines a second time. I really Like Terry Goodkind. Stephen Kings early and mid stuff is great have not read the newer stuff.
