Virtual rape?

I heard about this, weeks ago. And - the game developers IMMEDIATELY instituted a virtual 6-foot "buffer" zone, so the avatars can no longer .. grope each other. They now "bounce" off each other like two similarly polarized magnets.

Okay, I didn't understand what was going on. So a video game, had some code that allowed this to happen, then they rewrote the code, so it couldn't? Is that it in a nut shell.

According to SumOfUs' account, users invited the researcher to a private party on Horizon World earlier this month. Users in the same room then asked her to disable a setting that prevented others from getting within 4 feet of her.

In a part of the video SumOfUs opted not to share but describe, the researcher "was led into a private room at a party where she was raped by a user who kept telling her to turn around so he could do it from behind while users outside the window could see — all while another user in the room watched and passed around a vodka bottle," per the report.

======

Apparently the Reseacher TURNED OFF the "safety" setting.. "My guess" is the "r@pe" consisted of the male avatar hip thrusting against the female one, both from behind (and in front of?) the avatar.

I think I understand, but it's a bit more tech savvy then I'm capable of. i was also curious if you spelled rape with @ for some reason? Are we not allowed to use that word, or was it a personal choice?

Oh, and thank you for explaining that to me.

Please note that Rape is a highly sensitive topic, and discussions about it have to be kept 100% on topic and not drift off . Keep it civil, this thread is being watched closely.

Thank You!

I appreciate that, but I'm basically done. I got the explanation, and I understand it as well as I ever will. I also would never bring that up, in any way shape or form, in a light hearted manner.

But I see your point, in fact a crossword game I play on my phone, will not recognize the word, as a valid word. It was never in an actual puzzle, but you get credit for extra words, and if the word shakes, it's not considered valid, like if you try to add an "S" to a word like MICE.

I would like to ask though: Is virtual sexual assault a recognized legal crime in any country?
Virtual crimes such as hate speech and uttering threats fall under existing laws and can be prosecuted, but I'm not sure if this falls under any existing laws.

I'm not sure why this would ever be considered "rape" or "assault".

It's just a 3D character approaching another 3D character. Plus nudity and sexual content are forbidden on the platform. Plus users can block other users. Plus there are already safeguards that prevent users from approaching others. And the researcher accepted to disable that limitation.

Please do not diminish what actual rape is with this virtual nonsense. The player did not endure any sort of actual assault of any form.

This was not harassment, this was not "call to commit suicide", nothing like that, that could indeed have real consequences. No hands groping your body, no penetration, no hits and blows, no threats, no trauma, nothing! The researcher could just have blocked the other user, or could have taken her helmet off, or whatever.

It was a digital character approaching another digital character. It could have been a car approaching another car or anything else for that matter 🤷‍♂️

Considering it rape is a very serious insult to actual rape victims. And it's not acceptable.

Although it is not "real", the fact that it was possible to do this in a game does have a real significance in that it trivializes the act of rape. That is what is offensive.

I think, as besides MP Games with options to unlock besides the chat, in which already abuse is very possible, and happening, now "meta" aka Facebook, Instagramm etc. is moving into use of avatars and so on, it is pure logic that human nature, as Freud already found out, will push things into finding out how to abuse in new - now graphic, as in 3D porn - ways.

You know how especially females get attacked in so many situations, when opponents in "post wars" go to threatening to kill or abuse or mutilate them, it happens all the time, now it will become possible to act on these words, in the cyber marketplace, and there will be livestreamings of these happenings.

Legislation and Jurisdiction better be proactive and create new cyber crime task forces and laws, I see dark times coming.

I see it also. Sex doll sites will probably start next, making "child" dolls for the pedophiles.

Charles Dickens summed it up very well:
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

I think they do that already in Japan. But that leads to this thought. The government, and law enforcement routinely go on line and pose as minors for the purpose of ridding our society of filth, so combined with cyber crime units that already investigate non sexual crimes, I would guess they will have no choice but to address the issue.
