U.S. Government assumes control of student loans

The stakes of the health care debate are clear. On the table is a bill that would put the federal government in charge of one-sixth of the American economy and, perhaps even more stunningly, the way Americans get medical care. Yet far too few Americans realize there is another government takeover in the offing – this one in how Americans pay for college.

First, some history. Since 1965, the Federal Family Education Loan Program has helped tens of millions of students and parents by providing low-cost, federally guaranteed loans. This public-private partnership offers students and schools choice and competition among loan providers, as well as essential value-added benefits such as college outreach, debt management and financial literacy.

For these reasons, FFELP has consistently been the more popular choice among colleges and universities. It leverages the innovation and competitive forces of the private sector with congressionally mandated benefits and protections that keep interest rates and fees low.

Yet right now, the Majority in Congress and the President want to make it more difficult to pay for college by putting the government between you and the money you need to pay for higher education.

Get the fuck out of here you megalomaniacal commie bastards !

Historically, Governments tend to behave like an organism, sort of like the old sci fi movie The Blob... eating everything in it's way until it becomes so large, it collapses under its own weight.

Why not just let people people live their lives the way they see fit? You know, like the Constitution promised?

Kind of like Wal-Mart.

It won't stop until nothing exists but Wal-Mart.

What's that Wal-Mart? Are you speaking to me? Kill my friends??? Yes, Wal-Mart.........whatever you say...................

You don't have to be a right wing nutjob to be fearful of government... ;)

I have my own reasons why I think some g'ment policies are stupid and/or makes things worse...but what exactly should we be fearing from g'ment???

At it's worse (in your mind) what is the ultimate aim from those who believe the g'ment wants to take their "guns", "take over their health care", etc.

What is the g'ment's end game we should "fear"? To put us in concentration camps or something?

The fact that they screw up nearly everything they touch and little by little, your rights and freedoms will slip away one "reform" at a time... it is the nature of governments to amass power. Our Founders knew this and meant for the Constitution to limit their power over our right as individual citizens to live our lives as we see fit with MINIMAL government intrusion. :2 cents:

1. GM
2. The banks
3. Healthcare
4. Student loans

And this is just in ONE year of this administration. I wasn't really convinced of a government- I mean, Obama, take over. It seemed way too farfetched. I guess I'm not as right wing as I thought I was. But now, if you don't believe it's a take over, get your head out of your ass....and please wash it.

False narrative.

The g'ment loaned GM and the banks money based on the fact that they ask for help.

G'ment already is involved in health care and student loans.

Actually, again, this is a good thing. Letting banks privately ruin college students with draconian lending practices is not a good thing.

Government is good. Blood-sucking banks who feast on the poor = bad.

What you should be asking is why college is so expensive? Why do people graduate from law school, medical and Business school with 50K or more in debt?

You don't seem to care about the actual problem and instead gripe about insignificancies...(my word).

What this all means is that you will get $2 for each College Student and the rest goes towards the Military Fund for Weapons of Mass Destruction. G.I Joe before the ordinary joe!.

As a college student who has taken out loans, I thank President Obama for this. This means bigger grants for college students who need them, like myself. Relaxed payment terms for students with loans and more money for community colleges and historically black institutions.

You guys realize that the government had been giving the students the loans for ages, but with the banks acting as middle men, right?
And that all this bill did was eliminate the middle man, right?
And that, in eliminating the middle man, this means the money can be used more wisely and go to more students, instead of more banks, right?

You're exactly right, all this does is remove the middle man
